SUMTER — Sheriff’s deputies have charged seven people they say were involved in a weekend dogfight.
M edia outlets reported more than 20 people were at the Sumter County home when deputies arrived around 1 a.m. Sunday, but many ran into the woods. Authorities seized chains, weapons and medicine for animals at the property.
Six dogs were taken to an animal shelter. Five marijuana plants worth $10,000 also were seized.
The homeowner, Betty Simms, 42, has been charged with dogfighting, animal cruelty and manufacturing marijuana.
Others charged with dogfighting include: Willie Davis, 18; Chedric Jones, 17; Milton Gaymon, 21; Weldon Jackson, 20; Christopher Miller, 22; and Tony Mickens, 23.
