911 refused to help 'drunk,' says woman

A New Brunswick woman, who always figured 911 was the best way to order an ambulance, got the shock of her life this week when she dialed the emergency service but was refused help by an operator who allegedly accused her of being drunk.

Dorothy Sock, a 65-year-old member of the Elsipogtog First Nation, a Mi'kmaq reserve in eastern New Brunswick, was getting ready to take her friend Dora Simon, 71, to a hospital appointment when Simon telephoned to say she'd fallen down her steps, hurt her hip and n
eded an ambulance.

Sock called 911, but says she got a strange and hurtful response from an ill-tempered operator.

"He said: 'She's not hurt, she's had one too many,' &quo
t; S
ock said Friday.

"He then said: 'I know what you people are doing down there, y
ou're all drinking.' And then he hung up on me."

The RCMP are investigating the incident.
