The boldness stunned many residents, even if the elderly victims' resolve to stay in their neighborhood was unshaken.
While Eularene Burnham, 91, and her husband, 90-year-old Prentiss, were sleeping with a 20-gauge shotgun propped against the bed and their dog Cricket buried under the covers, someone entered their home early Wednesday. The intruder stole not only the shotgun but also Prentiss Burnham's heart medication, a lockbox full of documents and old Army memorabilia, and his gold Chevy Caprice.
The Burnhams were not hurt in the burglary, but the predawn break-in outraged their daughter, Wanda Eady.
"It's just a bunch of thugs living around here now," Eady said. Don't you mean niggers?
Like so many elderly residents, the Burnhams are living in a neighborhood drastically different from the one they moved into more than 50 years ago. But they don't intend to budge from their home on Oak Forest Drive in south Jackson.
"This has been home too long," said Eularene Burnham, 91, who believes an intruder entered through their kitchen window around 2 a.m.
Every kind of crime is common in the state's capital city - through November, statistics showed house burglaries, auto theft and grand larceny were among the offenses on the rise. But city officials won't release up-to-date stats to the public.
And older homeowners have been especially vulnerable as some high-profile attacks have shown, including two unsolved slayings.
Eady attributes the change in her parents' neighborhood to white flight. Other residents and city leaders say the complex crime issues they're facing are not just about race. The city leaders are a bunch of niggers, do you think they are going to take responsibility for nigger crime? Think again!
Eady, who lives in Terry, said she has "begged and begged and begged" her parents to leave. "That person came into their bedroom," she said. "What if they had done something else? What if?"
"They've broke in to every house on this block except mine and the Burnhams - and now they've broken in to it," said Irene Tramel, 76, a widow who lives next door with her son. "I guess I'm next."
Tramel said the neighborhood used to be "white and middle class," but gradually started changing over time.
"There are a lot of underlying reasons for crime - poverty, the economy," said former Jackson Mayor Harvey Johnson. "It's not limited to the issue of race. It's more complicated than that." Wrong again, nigger! It can all be explained by three letters from the alphabet T-N-B!
The best thing residents can do, Johnson said, is work together.
"Be the eyes and ears for the police," he said. "They can't be everywhere at once."
Genny Seeley, president of the Association of South Jackson Neighborhoods, agreed. "It doesn't matter if someone is black, white, red or blue," she said. "And isolating yourself from your neighbors only makes the situation worse. You have to build relationships with people." Yeah, get down wif da jigaboos, right! I should have thought of that, knowha'm'say'n.
Jackson Police Cmdr. Lee Vance said Wednesday police didn't yet have much information on the case other than what the Burnhams provided but he said burglars usually target unoccupied dwellings.
"They'll watch and see what time people leave from work and watch and see if anyone comes to the house during the day and night," he said. "Make sure you secure your home in whatever way that you are comfortable with."
Prentiss Burnham said police called about 6:30 p.m. and told him they recovered the Chevy at an apartment complex. He didn't know the location.
