Suspect in plant shooting held without bond

ROMULUS, Mich. A suburban Detroit paper plant worker charged with a fatal shooting at the plant appeared in court today.

Gustabo DeJesus Vanegas of Dearborn Heights is charged with first-degree murder, assault with intent to commit murder and using a gun in a felony. He was ordered held without bond.

Police in Taylor say Vanegas went to his car and got a gun after being fired from his job at the International Paper Company plant on Friday.

Police say he was angry and confronted his supervisor before shooting him once in the lower abdomen. Vanegas, a Honduran native who does not speak English well, then shot a co-work

er who was trying to translate for him, police said.

36-year-old Martha Winarto of
Novi died in surgery.

The supervisor is recovering from his wound.

Funeral services will be held Monday for a woman gunned down by one of her coworkers. Police say Gustabo Vanegas shot and killed Martha Winarto, and injured his supervisor, in an attack at the International Paper Company Friday.

Vanegas stood in the Taylor lockup as a judge arraigned him through a video connection.

The hearing began with testimony from Det. Jason Hall, of the Taylor police, who described what officers saw when they arrived at the International Paper Plant.

According to Det. Hall, the first officer at the scene found the two victims lying in ground. Winarto was still

conscious at that time.

Police believe it Vanegas who pulled the trigger. He was fired from the plant
Friday afternoon. Investigators say he then went to his car, grabbed a gun, and returned to the plant.

Vanegas shot his supervisor, Richard Grider, and his coworker, Martha Winarto.

While being asked if he understood the charges, Vanegas offered up some information that could be held against him down the line.

Sgt. John Sosa translated from Spanish for Vanegas during the hearing. "You're honor, he states that his intention was just to shoot Richard</span>, not... he understands what you're saying."

The judge presiding over the hearing replied, "Tell him [Vanegas] he should not make any other statements. He should just reply yes or no if possible."

Winarto died of her injuries, and Richard Grider is still in the hospital. Vanegas is charged with 1st degree murder, assault with i
nt
ent to commit murder, and using a gun in a felony.

The judge set no bond in this case, and Vanegas will be back in court late February for a preliminary examination.
