Defensive end Chris Mims in 1995.
Wednesday, October 15, 2008
Chris Mims, a starting defensive end on the only Chargers team to play in the Super Bowl, was found dead Wednesday in his Los Angeles apartment.
Mims, 38, was found dead about 9 a.m. in his residence in the 600 block of S. Flower Street, said Officer April Harding of the Los Angeles Police Department.
"There is no evidence of foul play," Harding said, while noting that the ex-athlete had suffered from "weight and medical problems." The cause of death will have to be determined by an autopsy, she said.
The 6-foot-5 Mims, who was listed at 300 pounds during his final NFL season in 1999, battled his weight and had legal and financial problems off the field during his time with the Chargers.
Mims, who was born in L.A., played collegiately at Tennessee and was picked in the first round (23rd overall) by the Chargers in 1992. He had 10 sacks that season, the second-highest rookie total in club history, as the Chargers won the AFC West. In 1994, the season that ended with the Chargers going to the Super Bowl, Mims had a career-high 11 sacks.
Mims played for the Chargers from 1992-99, except for 1997 when he was with the Washington Redskins. He retired in 2000 after failing to make the Chicago Bears roster in training camp.
He played in 104 games during his eight seasons in the league, starting 64, and had 42 sacks and forced 10 fumbles.
