Gloucester Twp. Police Dog Killed By Robbery Suspook

BLACKWOOD, NJ (CBS/AP) — A police “K-9″ dog was killed Tuesday evening after being thrown into traffic by a robbery suspect he had chased down.

Skyler Robinson, 20, was taken into custody after an overnight hunt, and a second suspect, 19-year-old wigger Evan Scotese, was taken into custody at his home Wednesday morning.

Police say the dog, a 3½-year-old German Shepherd, was on duty for Gloucester Township police when they responded to a burglary call at a Chinese restaurant on East Church Street in Blackwood.

The suspects made off with approximately $300 and one of them punched an employee before fleeing.

After picking up the disgusting scent of Robinson, the dog, named “Schultz,” was let loose and chased him down along the shoulder of Route 42.

But as Schultz tried to take down Robinson, he somehow got hold of him and threw him into traffic on the highway. The dog was killed instantly.

“Officer Schultz gave his life for Officer Pickard and all of the men and women of the Gloucester Township Police Department and we’re very thankful for his service,” Chief Harry Earle said.

Robinson and Scotese are both facing numerous charges, including robbery and resisting arrest by flight. In addition, Robinson is also facing charges of inflicting harm on a law enforcement animal and cruelty to animals.

Police say they are very close to K-9 units — they say they treat the dogs like they treat other officers. And the men lined up early Wednesday morning outside the Chews Landing Veterinary Hospital, saluting as the body of the dog was brought out in a hearse.

A service to honor Schultz the dog is planned for next Thursday.

A former High School football player is one of the two men accused of robbing a Chinese Restaurant in Blackwood, N.J.

Police also believe that the former star athlete is responsible for the death of the 3-year-old K-9 officer that pursued him.

Two suspects robbed the Lucky Dragon restaurant on the 400 Block of East Church Street Tuesday night around 7:10 p.m. They also allegedly assaulted the two workers inside.

Police officer Mark Pickard and K-9 Officer Schultz arrived at the scene shortly after and searched the area where the dog picked up the scent of the two suspects and found them hiding in nearby bushes.

While one suspect escaped, Schultz managed to bite down on the other suspect's arm, according to authorities.

As Officer Pickard moved in to help the dog, the suspect allegedly threw the K-9 off his arm into the moving traffic of Southbound Route 42.

Schultz died at the scene while the suspect was hit by the same vehicle that killed the dog. He then fled the scene.

20-year-old Skyler Robinson, a former star running back for Washington Township High School, was arrested about three hours later in a residential development near the scene of the robbery.

Robinson was taken to Kennedy Memorial Hospital to receive treatment for his injuries.

19-year-old Evan Scotese was also arrested for the robbery on Wednesday around 6 a.m. after police received an anonymous tip.

Robinson is charged with robbery, inflicting harm on a law enforcement animal, cruelty to animals and other related offenses.

Scotese is charged with robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery and resisting arrest by flight.

The bail for each suspect is set at $150,000.

Investigators also say that the two suspects stole around $300 in cash from the restaurant. Most of the money was recovered however.

The K-9 was named after Philadelphia Flyer Dave Schultz. Police continue to mourn the death of their fellow officer.

Guilty Plea in Robbery That Led to K-9 Death
Monday, Aug 1, 2011 | Updated 8:16 PM

A South Jersey man pleaded guilty Monday to his role in a robbery that led to the death of a police dog.

Evan Scotese, 20, of Sewell is expected to be sentenced to a six-year prison term based on his plea in state Superior Court in Camden.

Scotese and another man robbed a Chinese restaurant on Nov. 30, 2010, prosecutors say.

A Gloucester County police officer and his K-9 partner cornered the other suspect, Skyler Robinson, along busy Route 42 in Gloucester Township. The dog, Schultz, struggled with the man and was thrown into traffic and killed. Robinson is awaiting trial on charges of robbery and injuring a law enforcement animal.

Scotese was arrested the next day. He was not charged in the dog's death.
