Sex Offender Tries To Get Job At Southside Boys Home

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The man who applied for a position as a counselor at a Southside boys home was not who he said he was, police said.

They said he was actually hiding a secret past.

John Whiteside, also known as John Majerle, also known as John Miller, is a convicted sex offender from California who managed to get hired at a Boys Home in Arlington.

Whiteside was allowed to start job training before his background check was complete, but was never in contact with the children. Police said when his fingerpri

nts were processed, his cover was blown.

" was just shocked that he would be brazen enough to ap
ply for a job working with children, said Boys Home Association President Rob Brown.

California's sex offender Web site shows Whiteside was convicted of attacking and trying to rape someone in Los Angeles.

Whiteside told police he moved here a few weeks ago. Police said using a bogus Social Security number and a fake name; he posed as someone qualified to work with children.

Just that he had a degree and had experience working with children, Brown said.

Brown said Whiteside was hired and sent downtown for training, but not without the association first running a background check on him.

Although Whiteside was wanted in California for failing to register as a sex offender, he still submitted his fingerprints.

Within
days
, Ja
cksonville officials knew who he really was and what he had done.

Workers were quite surprised when Whiteside walked into the boys home and asked for his p
aycheck. They immediately dialed 911 and stalled him until police got there.

You would think someone who's wanted, as long as he's been wanted, would have just taken off and gone somewhere, but he stuck around, Brown said.

The Local Station's Jennifer Waugh went to Whiteside's last known address, where police said he lives with his wife, but no one answered the door -- a door that faces Lee High School.

This guy had five different aliases that he was using and had a valid Florida driver's license. It's frightening, Brown said.

The system worked in this case and Brown said thanks to the cooperation of the boy's home, the Department of Children and Families and
police,
the kid
s are safer.

Whiteside was charged with failing to register as a sex offender, and Brown said he also faces a felony charge for lying on his application.
