Unrestrained 2-Year-Old Ejected From Vehicle Upon Impact

GARY, Ind. -- A Gary, Ind., woman was sentenced to six years probation for neglect in connection with the death of her 2-year-old daughter, who was ejected from a moving car and drowned in the Grand Calumet River in July 2005, according to the Lake County Prosecutor's Office.

Jacqueline Green, 24, pleaded guilty Sept. 15 to a felony count of neglect of a dependent, and was sentenced Tuesday by Lake Superior Court Judge Diane Boswell, according to a release from the prosecutor's office.

Co-defendant Donna Amos, 34, of Gary, pleaded guilty Sept. 6 to criminal recklessness and faces up to three years in prison when she is sentenced Nov. 29 by Judge Boswell, the release sai

According to prosecutors, Amos was driving a 1995 GMC Jimmy SUV on July 27, 2005, with Jacqueline Green in the front seat and Jatima Green, 2, in the middle rear passenger seat, but not in any type of child safety seat. While driving eastbound on the Indiana Toll Road, Amos crashed the vehicle into a bridge wall at the Cline Avenue exit near Mile Marker 10, the release said.

Jatima was thrown out of the vehicle and fell into the Grand Calumet River, her body swept downstream and not found until two days later by Indiana State Police divers, the release said.
