McNair High's Football Coach Arrested
Alleged "down-low" negro coach, Johnny Gilbert
Police arrested the head football coach of McNair High School on school property Monday and charged him with two counts of child molestation.
Johnny Gilbert is also charged with two counts of enticing a child for indecent purposes and two counts of sexual contact with a person in custody or control.
"The investigation started about a week and half ago and concluded with the arrest of a teacher today," said Dr. Garry McGiboney, the assistant school superintendent for DeKalb County schools.
While few details h
ave been released in the case, McGiboney told 11Alive's Jon Shirek that the incident that led to Gilbert's arrest involved the coach and
two students -- a male and female. The teenaged girl told somebody about some alleged inappropriate contact two weeks ago, prompting an investigation by DeKalb County schools police.
Gilbert was removed from the classroom and assigned to other duties that did not involve contact with students until his arrest on Monday. After his arrest, he was removed from the school and suspended with pay.
"It's very difficult, it's more difficult than I can even put into words because we, of course, value all of our teachers but more importantly we value the health and safety of our students. That comes first and foremost," said Dr. McGiboney.
Gilbert has worked at McNair High for six years. He underwent a background check that included finge
rprinting when he was hired and had no prior arrests, McGiboney said. Gilbert is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.
Just four months ago, Gilbert was honored as a Coach of the Week by the Atlanta Falcons and NFL for l
eading McNair to a 7-0 start -- it's best since 1991.
