RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - For the second time in recent weeks, someone has used Richmond's Bryan Park to spread hateful messages.
The park was covered with racist graffiti Friday and police are on the look out for the vandals who did it. Police say they have put more officers on patrol in the park.
People who enjoy the park's beauty say they hope the increased police presence will make a difference. The serene landscape of Bryan Park, marred once again by messages of hate.
"It's terrible, nothing like that should be going on in a beautiful place like this," said Jesse Harris of Richmond.
"Disturb
ing because it's not a good thing for kids to see," said Ramesh Natarajan of Henrico County.
Unfortunately, when Natarajan's seven year old daughter stepped into the women's restroom, she caught a glimpse of the racial slurs against blacks and Jews. Some tough questions for her father followed.
"Kids have to learn things the hard way or easy way better the easy way but when they see something like that I'm glad I was around so I could tell her what it was and why it's not a good idea to do that," said Natarajan.
Police say either late Thursday night or in the wee hours of Friday morning, the vandals spray painted buildings, bridges and signs. By Friday afternoon, most of it had been cleaned up by the city's graffiti removal team.
This is the third time in recent weeks, Richmond police have been called about anti-Semitic vandalism in Bryan Park and the nearby Bellevue community. Although there's no direct link, police say they're not ruling out all three cases may be relat
ed.
"Those people have no business in this park," said Harris.
"How do you catch these guys that's the thing right you don't know when they come and do it and I don't know the reasoning behind it it makes no sense at all," said Natarajan.
If you have information that could help police, call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000. Damage over a thousand dollars is considered a felony with a jail sentence of up to five years.
