LEE'S SUMMIT, Mo. -- Police are searching for two men who robbed a family in the 2300 block of Southeast Second Terrace Tuesday evening after returning home from a shopping trip.
Investigators said that a 43-year-old woman had just gotten home from shopping at Wal-Mart at about
8 p.m. Police said she parked in the driveway and went into the hous
e through the garage.
The woman's husband, 22-year-old daughter and 5-month-old granddaughter were home at the time.
Just after walking in, the victim said, two black men, dressed in dark clothing and carrying silver handguns, came in through the same door.
Police said that the men took the woman's purse and her shopping bag
from
Wal-Mart, along with several other items from the house. No one was hurt.
The woman told KMBC's Peggy Breit that she had sensed she was being followed while doing some Christmas shopping at Wal-Mart. She said she was so frightened that she requested an escort to her car and she was paranoid while driving home.
"I thought I was home free when I got in the garage, but I was terribly wrong," the woman said, who asked not to be identified.
She said she was telling her husband about the man following her when she heard the door from the garage opening.
"I was only in the house two minutes and then they barged in with guns, put a g
un to my husband's head, grabbed me, threw me into the kitchen chair, put a gun to my head, just told me not to look at them or they'd blow my head off," the woman said.
She said the gunmen threatened her daughter and granddaughter and demanded the family's valuables.
"He grabbed my purse and my br
iefcase,
my husband's wallet, his coat, his computers, anything they could just pick up and run with and they did," the woman said.
The woman said the man tailing her at Wal-Mart was not one of the intruders, but she believes the incidents are related.
Investigators are reviewing surveillance video. Meanwhile, the family is cleaning up fingerprint dust, changing the locks on their doors and evaluating their sense of safety.
"Everybody should just be very aware of your surroundings -- I was, obviously, not quite enough, but I'm going to be better at it from now on ... pay attention and if it doesn't feel right, it's not right," the woman said.
The first suspect
is described as being between 25 and 30 years old, about 6 feet tall with a medium build and "a noticeable gut."
The second man was described as being about the same age, 6 feet 1 inch tall with a stocky build. Both men were clean-shaven.
Police are checking if there
is a connect
ion with a home invasion in Overland Park Sunday night.
