Man Sexually Assaults Three-Year-Old Child

(Columbia) - Richland County Sheriff's deputies are looking for a man who sexually assaulted a three-year-old girl at a Midlands day care center.

Investigators say the man took the child into a restroom and sexually assaulted her on Monday, January 24th, at Spring Valley Presbyterian Church Day Care on Sparkleberry Lane.

The man was about 25-years-old. He wore a large diamond earring.

Investigators are hoping that anyone with information in this case will immediately contact the Richland County Sheriff's Department at 576-3000 or Crimestoppers at 1-888

Richland Co. searching for suspect in Jan. child molestation

(Richland County) Feb. 4, 2005 - Authorities in Richland County are searching for a man who sexually assaulting a child last month.

Richland County investigators say the man took a 3-year-old girl into the restroom of the Spring Valley Presbyterian Church Day Care on Sparkleberry Lane and fondled her on January 24th.

Officers say the suspect took the girl into the restroom without the knowledge of day care staff. Richland County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Chris Cowan, "We believe this was a crime of opportunity. We believe he took advantage of an opportunity to get into the church and taking that child and placing the child in the bathroom."

The man left after the assault. The girl went back to her classroom and did not tell her teacher, but later the girl did tell her mother. She was then given a medical checkup. The sketch is based on a man the mother says she saw outside the daycare after the attack.

Church Pastor Dr. Peter Thompson says before the incident and until last Wednesday, the door to the day care and the church offices was unlocked during business hours, but now all doors are locked, "We are in the process of looking at further means, video surveillance, a possibility to increase the safety. We are all more vigilant now. I mean, it has raised our level of awareness that we are living in a community that has a lot of possibilities for acts that we wouldn't like to have happen at church."

Investigators say they identified one man as the potential attacker, but have since ruled him out
as
a suspect.

The suspect is described as 20- to 25-years-old, standing approximately 5-feet, 8-inches tall and weig
hs 150 pounds. Investigators say he was wearing a large diamond earring. Anyone who knows anything about the suspect is asked to contact the Richland County Sheriff's Department at 576-3000.

The child is reportedly still attending the daycare.

Suspected Child Molestor Still on the Loose

Columbia) - At Whiteford Christian Day School in Lexington, officials say they've got all the needed safety measures in place, to keep unwanted visitors out.

Pastor Russell Thompson oversees the daycare.

"People will wonder in, especially at a church facility, because people are looking for help, and frankly, daycares are a target."

It sounds as if Pastor Thompson smells the negro!

Thompson says don't mistake the church for being light on security. In addi

tion to keeping all doors locked, officials have recently added close to $10,000 in secuirty cameras and monitoring equipment. Anyone who
wants to sign out a child, must be on file with the program.

Thompson says it's expensive to be safe, but when it comes to protecting the children, cost is no object.

"We pray and hope God will protect us, but God also gives us a responsibility for good stewardship, and part of that is to be safe and protect our children here."

On January 24th, Richland County investigators say a man molested a three year-old girl inside a bathroom at Spring Valley Presbyterian Church Daycare in Columbia.
