OMAHA, Neb. -- A woman told police she was raped after someone broke into her home Sunday, and police think she may be the latest victim of a serial rapist.

The victim said someone broke into her house near 68th and Hamilton streets. She said she was sexually assaulted and that her 11-year-old daughter was also fondled.
The suspect is described as a black man between 20 and 30 years old and about 5 feet 9 inches tall and about 170 pounds. He was wearing dark clothing and had a gun.

Police: No Tip Is Too Small In Rape Cases

(Black) Rapists Have Hit All Parts Of City

KETV NewsWatch 7's Kevin Tomich analyzed the crime reports for the attacks and identified some patterns. One rapist moves slowly, victimizing women in northeast Omaha. The other is fast and is attacking all over the city.

The most recent rape happened Sunday. The victim said someone broke into her house near 68th and Hamilton streets. She said she was sexually assaulted and that her 11-year-old daughter was also fondled. The attacker is described as a black man between 20 and 30 years old,
and about 5 feet 9 inches tall and about 170 pounds. He was wearing dark clothing and had a gun.

Omaha police think the rape may be connected to at least four others in the area. In August, women we

re raped near 48th and Q streets, 95th Street and R P
laza and 110th and Lafayette streets. Police believe a rape in June in Clive, Iowa -- just outside Des Moines -- is also connected.

The attacker ties up his victims, holds them down and threatens them. He is apparently moving quickly, fitting the description of five rapes within four months.

The other man police seek tends to prey on women in northeast Omaha. The first attack happened more than a year ago near 61st Street and Villa De Sante Drive. The second happened in January near 19th and Locust streets, and the third in February near 40th and Jaynes streets. His three alleged victims are young and black. Twice, he forced his way into homes by breaking a window in the early morning hours, and both time he woke his victims, police
reports show.

In those cases, police are using DNA testing to try to locate the attacker.

Police are looking for a black man with a stocky build, who may be in his 30s with a
sha
ved head. Police think there may be more than three victims.

Serial Rape Arrest - Suspect arrested at Omaha apartment

Omaha police have arrested a suspect in connection with a serial rape case. Chief Thomas Warren says forensic evidence links him to four sexual assault cases in the metro area and one case in Clive, Iowa.

At a Thursday news conference, Chief Warren said that Shawn T. Bynum is facing multiple counts, including several charges of sexual assault, kidnapping and weapons charges.

The arrest followed a Wednesda
robbery at the Cass County Bank. The suspect, who made off with $30,000, resembled the description of the man wanted in the rape investigation.

One rape suspect is caught, but one is still out there

The arrest of a suspe
cted serial rapist is good news, Omaha's police chief said, but it comes with a catch: police still have another serial rapist to catch.

"Personally, I'm happy," said Chief Thomas Warren. "I'm not ecstatic, because we have another serial rape investigation that is currently under way."

The four attacks on young black women attributed to the man still at large began Sept. 16, 2002, and the most recent occurred June 5.

In the first attack, a 17-year-old girl was raped while her 12-year-old sister was in bed next to her in their home near 61st Street and Ville de Sante Drive.

The man waited 15 months befo
re striking again. He attacked a 23-year-old woman on Jan. 9 near 19th Avenue and Locust Street.

The next victim, a 21-year-old woman, was assaulted April 1 near 40th and Jaynes Streets, and the mos
t re
cent attack, on a 17-year-old girl, happened at an apartment near 107th Plaza and Ida Street.

In each attack, the rapist broke in through a window in the early morning.
He bound the women and stayed with them for hours.

Warren said police have no reason to believe that the man responsible for this series of rapes is linked to the more recent attacks for which Shawn T. Bynum was arrested Wednesday.

Investigators say the man who is still at large watches women for a while before attacking, while Bynum acted more quickly and chose his victims regardless of their race.

Through witness and victim statements, police say, the rapist who is still sought is black, probably 5-foot-3 to 5-foot-9 and 175 to 250 pounds. He's stocky and muscular with a close-shaved or
bald head.

As part of their investigation, police have collected DNA samples from several black men, a tactic that has been criticized by some defense lawyers.

After the four
th attac
k, a police sketch was made of a man seen in the parking lot of that victim's apartment. The man had spoken briefly with the victim three hours before she was raped.

The man, whom police ca
ll a "person of interest," was driving a newer silver car that may have been a two-door Pontiac Grand Am.
