Man charged in teen assault already facing deportation
By BILL LAYE, CALGARY SUN

An immigrant accused in connection with an alleged assault on a 15-year-old girl in the city's northeast -- while on mandatory supervision from prison -- will be deported, say local authorities. This week, police charged Manjit Singh Sohal, 33, with one count each of criminal harassment/stalking and atte
pted abduction of a person under the age of 16.

The charges stem from an incident Tuesday when a man allegedly followed and grabbed the teenage girl, who was later able to break free and run for hel
p.

Under federal legislation, a convict is allowed to serve the final one-third of
his or her sentence in the community under supervision.

Sohal, who is from India, is a landed immigrant and officials have already decided his time in Canada will end once his five-year sentence is up.

His current charges will only postpone the process, since now they too have to be resolved, said Robert Ferguson, director of enforcement for the Canada Border Services Agency in Calgary.

He said more than 200 people in the Calgary area were deported for criminal activities last year

On July 14, Manjit Singh SOHAL, 33, was charged with one
count of criminal harassment/stalking and one count of
attempted abduction of a person under 16.
