6th Incident Tied To Serial Rapist

OMAHA, Neb. -- Police revealed Thursday that another attempted rape in April of 2003 probably was the work of a serial rapist.

A police representative said there are similarities between that incident and five others linked to the same man. The attack happened in a north Omaha neighborhood. A 17-year-old girl woke up to a man standing over her wearing only a bandanna and boxer shorts, police said. The attacker shocked the girl with a stun gun, but she fought him off.

When police arrived, they discovered that the man had entered the house through a basement window to attack and rape a young black woman, police said, and that fits the pattern of the serial rapist.

The attacks date

back to September of 2002. There have been four rapes and two
attempted rapes. In each case, the victim is a young black woman. Each victim describes the same attacker, according to police.

"We won't be taking any questions but we will continue to pursue the individual responsible for these crimes," said Police Chief Thomas Warren.

Warren called a news conference Thursday to announce that the reward for finding the serial rapist is larger -- rising from $5,000 to $12,000.

Jeff Wilke raised an additional $6,000.

"Our heart goes out to the young women -- have to live every day not knowing where the suspect is. We figure it's pretty tough," Wilke said.

Wilke's wife was raped two years ago. Her attacker was convicted.

Wilke's fund-raising helped raise the total to one of the largest rewards the Crime Stoppers board can remember. Police hope it helps track down the rapist.

They think the rapist
las
t attacked on Christmas Eve at an apartment complex in northwest Omaha. The mother of the victim bit the attacker on
the hand.

Police are looking for a black man, about 5 feet 6 inches tall with a stocky build. At first, Omaha police thought he worked for the Omaha Public Power District, so they did DNA testing on several OPPD workers. That turned up nothing.

Omaha police also released a sketch of a man to whom they want to talk in connection with the rapes. Police said a man resembling the sketch was seen in the area of one of the rapes a few hours before the rape happened.

Police are asking news media not to run the sketch anymore. They still would like to talk to him, but said the tips they're getting from the sketch are "messing up the investigation."
