Serial Rapist Attacks Another Victim

March 3, 2005 --The Big Story on Action News is the search for a serial rapist who's been attacking women either on or just off the Roosevelt Boulevard in the Feltonville section of Philadelphia. He has assaulted at least 5 women, raping three of them, all since January fourth and as recently as Wednesday night. He has both the police's and the neighborhood's attention.

In three of the five attacks the women were raped. They think the same man may be behind all these attacks. They're not talking specifically about evidence such as DNA, but the description of the man is the same and all these attacks happened within a six-block radius in the section of the city.

The first rape dates back to January 4th of this year. A 42-ye
ar-old woman was walking along Roosevelt when she was grabbed from behind and pushed into a lot. It happened in the morning and no weapon was used on February 24th when a 29-year-old woman was grabbed from behind. The attacker threw a coat over her head and stole a cell phone and gold chain. No sexual assault took place. It happened around 11:00 in the morning.

The primary focus might be robbery in a number of these cases.

On February 26 at 8:00 in the morning, a 28-year-old woman was walking along Roosevelt Boulevard and the attacker threw a coat over her head and punched her. Police say she wasn't sexually assaulted but was robbed of her camera, cell phone and personal I.D.

It appears in four of the five cases there was the use of a piece of clothing that was thrown over the head of the victim to prevent identification.

In this fourth case, in the evening of the 26th, a 48-year-old woman on the 500 bloc
k of
East Roosevelt Boulevard was raped and robbed. The attacker threatened to use
a gun.

The latest assault happened just last night. Police say 18-year-old was rape and robbed after the attacker threw a jacket over her head.

Now, police at this point are working on a composite sketch. He is described as having a medium to dark complexion, 5' 11" (IWO, mediaspeak for nigger) and they are urging women to not walk alone. If you have any information about the rapes or robberies, please call police.

Teen Rape Suspect Charged

Feltonville, March 5, 2005 --A big development in the investigation into a series of rapes in the city's Feltonville section. Philadelphia police have charged a teenager in connection with a string of rapes in the city's Feltonville section.

Capt. John Darby/PHILADELPHIA POLICE: "This individual is identified as a Christopher David Williams, he's a 19-year-old black male."

Police say he was wearing a red outfit but he was no Santa Clause, although it made it easier to spot him. The officers observed a male fitting the description that Action News broa

dcast Thursday. Police say the suspect in red was seen following a female to a bus stop along Roosevelt Boulevar
d at D Street just before 11:30 Thursday night. When officers James Goodwin and Richard Prior of the 25th district moved in, the guy made a run for it, but they chased after him and caught him.

OFFICERS JAMES GOODWIN AND RICHARD PRIOR: "We're just doing our job....why we became police officers."

The suspect is being charged in four of the five attacks in a one square mile area of Feltonville. Robbery appears to be the motive but in three cases, he also sexually assaulted women who were walking alone and were approached from behind.

"I think the message to the Feltonville community should be that they can rest easy."

And that much appears to be the case among women we spoke with. Captain Francis Bachmayer of the 25th district is being credited for quickly noticing a pattern after the second attack and sounding alarms at Special Victims and his
off
icers.

Capt. Francis Bachmayer/PHILADELPHIA POLICE: "We were committed to arrest this individual and the officers did an outstanding job."

nAnd police strongly believe there are other victims out there who haven't come forward.

"We do invite anyone else who was a victim of crime to give us a call."
Nineteen-year-old Chris Williams is facing all sorts of charges: multiple rape, indecent assault, aggravated indecent assault, robbery, theft and possession of an instrument of crime. And if police have their way, he won't be going anywhere for a while but the slammer.
