A career criminal was charged with the mugging of a Hamtramck grandmother, Thursday.

53-year-old Gene Napoleon was charged with unarmed robbery and being a habitual offender after he attacked an 82-year-old woman and robbed her in August. His bond was set at $1 million.

Detectives said a tipster recognized Napoleon from surveillance video of the incident.

Police said his criminal career began in the 1970s with retail fraud. He was released from prison last year after serving several years behind bars for an attack similar to the one in August.

In court Napoleon
admitted to being wanted in Roseville for retail fraud.

The 82-year-old victim is expected to testify next week in his preliminary exam.
