Suspect Stabs Family Dog During Delaware Break-In

WILMINGTON (CBS 3) ― A Delaware darkie is in custody after breaking into a Wilmington apartment and repeatedly stabbing a family dog Wednesday evening.

Police were called to the Mill Creek Village Apartments on Scarborough Drive just before 5:30 after a reported break-in.

Inside the residence, officers found an American Bulldog named "Chopper" bleeding heavily from multiple stab wounds.

Elsmere Police arrested a suspect, identified as 45-year-old Cecil Wright, after finding him fleeing the scene, covered in blood, armed with a pocked knife and carrying a small bag of marijuana.

Investigators discovered the dog's owner had witnessed a domestic dispute between Wright and his girlfriend in the parking lot of the apartment complex. The neighbor intervened after Wright struck his girlfriend while holding an infant.

As the dispute came to an end, Wright, who appeared to be intoxicated, became enraged at the neighbor believing she had taken his car keys. When the neighbor returned to her apartment she found Wright inside, stabbing her dog with a pocket knife.

Wright fled through a patio door and called 911, falsely reporting a shooting. He has been charged with one count of cruelty to an animal, possession of a deadly weapon, burglary and related offenses.

Chopper underwent emergency surgery at Windcrest Animal Hospital and is in stable condition.
