Fighting hate with puppets

Jewish-Muslim show

By CHRIS DOUCETTE, TORONTO SUN

Toronto's Jewish and Muslim youth are fighting back against hate with a puppet show aimed at teaching kids to embrace their cultural differences. The Concerned Kids -- an outreach program in which young people from both faiths work together -- took their
how on the road yesterday to Portage Trail Public school in the city's west end.

"We just think this a real time of opportunity," said Heather deSilva, acting executive director of The
r
C
oncerned Kids.

"The kids are eager, they don't have the prejudices set in yet," she said.

The show's four puppets represent a variety of racial and religious backgrounds.

They talk about issues affecting people in a multicultu
ral society and get the kids talking about their differences.

Following the show, the school takes over with activities designed to build on what was learned from the performance.

The puppet show, sponsored in large part by B'nai Brith Canada, is to appear at nine other schools around the city.

Christopher Browne, 10, said he learned a lot about tolerance and the puppets made it fun. He had this message for those responsible for the recent string of hate-motivated crimes against J*WS and Muslims:

"
I would say don't judge people because they might start judging you and you won't feel good when you go home, you'll feel that nobody likes you."

Meanwhile, York Regional Poli
ce
continue
to investigate an explosion at a Woodbridge business that occurred Sunday night.

Det. Russ Lauria said he hoped that by today the building would be safe enough for investigators to start sifting through the rubble to determine the cause of the blast and if there is a link to the black swasti
kas found spray-painted inside.
