Police: 71-year-old man shot and killed in attempted carjacking in Gates

Created: April 07, 2021 11:26 AM

GATES, N.Y. (WHEC) — Police say an innocent man is dead after an attempted carjacking on Buell Road in Gates Wednesday morning.

Police say it happened just before 11 a.m. They say the victim was a 71-year-old man and he was shot multiple times.

He was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he died.

"I can tell you that this is a total—unbelievable—just a true brazen act of violence that occurred in broad daylight at 10:45 a.m., which is unacceptable and not something that we would routinely see here in the Town of Gates," Gates Police Chief James VanBrederode said.

VanBrederode says one suspect is a light-skinned Black or Hispanic man. Police are looking for a black car with tinted windows and anyone with information is encouraged to call 911.

Friends and family remember man killed in attempted carjacking: 'Richard Sciascia didn't deserve that'

GATES, N.Y. (WHEC) — On Thursday, Gates Police released the name of the 71-year-old man who was shot and killed in an attempted carjacking on Buell Road Wednesday morning: Richard Sciascia of Irondequoit.

"A 71-year-old citizen just going about their daily activities today [Wednesday], fell victim to this carjacking," said Gates Police Chief James Vanbrederode Wednesday.

Richard was on his way to visit his son, Sam, who was staying at the Red Roof Inn on Buell Road. When he was shot, he was about 100 yards from his destination. It was routine for Richard to visit Sam here, as they had a particularly close relationship.

Gates Police searching for 'one more' suspect in deadly attempted carjacking

Created: April 23, 2021 11:35 AM

GATES, N.Y. (WHEC) — A day after announcing an initial arrest, Gates Police say they are still searching for "one more" suspect in connection to a deadly attempted carjacking at the beginning of April.

Gates Police Chief James VanBrederode told News10NBC the search is "in the process' and is "very involved."

News10NBC obtained the felony complaint that alleges 16-year-old Edgar Tolentino shot and killed Richard Sciascia in his car in Gates on April 7. The 71-year-old grandfather was on his way to visit his son at the time.

His family members tell us they're relieved someone will be held accountable for his death.

The Monroe County District Attorney's Office says shortly after Tolentino’s arrest, he was arraigned virtually in Youth Part Court.

Tolentino is being held without bail. His booking photo was released Friday.

VanBrederode says once the other suspect is in custody, they will hold a press conference on this case.
