HOUSTON - - A 30-year-old Houston woman is facing animal cruelty charges after police say she threw a puppy out of an apartment window.
According to court documents, Nidra Billard’s boyfriend left in the middle of an argument, so she threw his six-week-old pit bull out of a third-floor window.
"(The puppy) landed on a courtyard that was a mixture of grass and sidewalk," said Assistant District Attorney Belinda Smith.
Amazingly, the dog survived. The non-responsive pup was taken to BARC for treatment.
"BARC sees a lot of despicable things, but to see a dog used as a tool to get back at someone that you are in a fight with? Just shows a complete lack of any type of humanity," said Christopher Newport with BARC.
The volunteers at BARC have even given him a name: Rocky.
"This has got to be one of the most resilient puppies we have ever seen," said Newport.
But while he’s resilient, the 50-foot fall doesn’t come without consequence.
"No broken bones, but unfortunately his eyesight is not good to possibly gone at this point," said David Atencio of BARC.
Billard’s bond was set at $5,000. She faces up to two years in state jail and a $10,000 fine if convicted. Her next court appearance is in July.
