Swastikas scratched into walls at St. Cloud State computer lab

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (AP) - St. Cloud police are trying to find out who carved swastikas on a wall at St. Cloud State University.

Police say two swastikas were scratched into the wall of a computer lab, and into a stall wall in a bathroom. Both incidents happened in the school's multicultural office.

Police are classifying the incident as bias-motivated property damage.

St. Cloud State University has requested extra patrol and walkthroughs.

Oregon White Supremacist Sentenced for Attack on Synagogue

Oregon White Supremacist Sentenced for Attack on Synagogue

WASHINGTON – Gabriel Doyle Laskey, 22, was sentenced to six months incarceration (with work release), six months home detention, and five years probation for his role in a 2002 rock attack on Temple Beth Israel, in Eugene, Ore., in which a group of men threw stones etched with swastikas through the synagogue’s windows during a religious service. In April of this year, his brother Jacob Laskey, the ringleader of the group, was sentenced to more than 11 years in prison for charges relating to the attack and his efforts to obstruct justice in the case. Another defendant, Gerald Poundstone, was sentenced to 15 months imprisonment in September 2006.

According to the plea agreements and statements in federal district court in Eugene, Ore., the Laskey brothers and Poundstone, along with two other men, conspired to intimidate Jewish congregants at the Temple Beth Israel. The men traveled to the synagogue on Oct. 25, 2002, in a vehicle driven by Jacob Laskey. They then threw rocks etched with swastikas through the synagogue’s stained glass windows while 80 members of the temple were inside. After throwing the rocks, the men fled the scene. The Laskey brothers and Poundstone pleaded guilty to various charges including conspiracy to deprive persons of their civil rights and intentional destruction of religious property. Jacob Laskey pleaded guilty to additional charges including obstruction of justice-related charges and a firearms offense.

“Such an attack on peaceful worshipers, using a symbol calculated to instill fear in a particular community, is a heinous act that will not be tolerated," stated Rena J. Comisac, Acting Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division. “The Department of Justice is committed to the vigorous enforcement of federal hate crime laws."

“Prosecuting individuals who seek to harm others because of their religion, race or national origin is a top priority of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon and the Department of Justice," stated Karin Immergut, U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon.

The Department of Justice has compiled a significant record on criminal civil rights prosecutions in recent years. For example, in the last seven years, the Civil Rights Division brought 41 cross-burning prosecutions and convicted 60 defendants for these heinous crimes. And, in the last two fiscal years, the Division convicted record numbers of defendants for civil rights violations. In fiscal year 2007, the Division convicted 189 defendants, the highest number of defendants ever in the history of the Division, which surpassed last year’s record number of 181 defendants.

The government’s case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney William E. (Bud) Fitzgerald and Civil Rights Division Trial Attorney Roy Conn III. The case was investigated by special agents from the Eugene office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Teens Charged In Hate Crime
Police Say Teens Sprayed Painted Messages On Home

SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. -- Police in Miami-Dade have made an arrest in the hate crime targeting a Southwest Miami-Dade family.

Jorge Leyva, Jose Montero, Olenka Gayoso, all 19, and two other teens are all facing felony charges. They also face a charge of hate crime with prejudice. The two other teens are 17 and considered juveniles, so they are not being identified by Local 10.

Swastikas, the number 666 and messages of hate were spray-painted on the family's driveway, mailbox, garage and walls at the Kendall home on Dec. 15, Local 10 reported. Among the messages were the words "burn Jews," "burn in hell" and "Adolph Hitler."

"I was almost two blocks away and I could see the red swastika from that distance," said neighbor Alan Harris. "I was pretty appalled. I was pretty shocked, actually."

The Jewish family has lived on the block for a decade, but they said, this is the third time in three months that their home has been targeted. The home was also recently egged.

Police did not say if the teens were involved in the previous incidents.

Icelander Suspected of Online Racism Arrested

January 4, 2008

An Icelandic male in his 30s was arrested last month in relation to an investigation of the website skapari.is which contains racist propaganda. On the website so-called “Enemies of Iceland”” are listed, including Iceland’s President and the First Lady.

A picture of the Icelandic national flag where a picture of the swastika has been overlaid can be seen in many places on the website, Frettabladid reports.

The man was released after interrogation, but a computer which was confiscated at his home at the time of his arrest is being investigated by the technical department of the police. Police have no other suspects at the moment.

The website has been closed. It was hosted in the US, which makes the investigation more difficult.

Oslo mosque boosts security

January 14, 2008

The World Islamic Mission's mosque in Oslo has boosted security measures after somone left a pig's head and a Nazi flag inside the mosque's entrance during Friday prayer services.

"It's clear that someone has done this to provoke us," the chairman of World Islamic Mission, Jehangir Bahadur, told newspaper Aften on Monday.

He called the act "offensive" and "a clear threat" against the mosque. "Pork is strictly forbidden in Islam, and that makes the incident very serious," he said.

Bahadur said the mosque has also received racist e-mail that it hadn't been taking very seriously, but that's changed now. World Islamic Officials reported the unwelcome delivery of the pig's head and Nazi flag, which occurred just before Christmas, to Oslo police.

Tom Gulliksen of the Grí¸nland Police Station, nearest the mosque, said a police investigation was suspended for lack of evidence, but it will be taken up again if new leads emerge. A surveillance camera picked up an image of the person making the delivery, but it was too grainy to reveal any identity.

Both the flag and the pig's head were sent to the police crime lab. Since Nazi items were involved, Norway's criminal intelligence unit PST was notified as well.

"I think that the person who did this is either unbalanced(that's a two-way street), or was mounting a PR stunt," Gulliksen said.

College Students Charged With Spray-Painting Swastikas

POSTED: 8:48 am EST February 8, 2008
UPDATED: 9:26 am EST February 8, 2008

TRENTON, N.J. -- Three college students were charged with spray-painting swastikas on statues and signs in three central New Jersey communities.

Authorities said "stupidity" was the motive.

The vandalism happened in East Windsor, Hightstown and Roosevelt last month.

Police said they cracked the case with a tip from someone who said the men had bought spray paint at a Wal-Mart.

Nicholas Kurahara, who attends the University of Delaware; Nikolai Afanassenkov, who attends the University of Hartford; and Max Drazdik, who attends George Washington University, were charged with bias intimidation and bias-based criminal mischief.

Swastikas spray-painted on Jewish synagogue in Wilkes-Barre
Sherry Long

WILKES-BARRE - A Jewish synagogue on South Franklin Street between Ross and South Streets has been defaced.

Jewish worshippers arrived Saturday morning to find Congregation Ohav Zedek's set of three front wooden doors vandalized as swastikas and a Star of David were drawn using silver and a goldish-brown color spray paint.

Wilkes-Barre Police Sgt. James Sheridan said a report was made Saturday morning, but he said it's unknown exactly when the vandalism occurred.

Hate crime being investigated

WILKES-BARRE — The source of anti-Semitic graffiti at Congregation Ohav Zedek on South Franklin Street remains under investigation.

Between 9 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday, someone painted swastikas, the word “abschaum”” — German for “scum”” or “refuse”” — and a star of David with “Juden”” scrawled above it on the doors.

It isn’t the first act of vandalism at the synagogue. About a month ago, someone damaged an outdoor light.

But that was minor in comparison, possibly just an act of mischief, said Rabbi Nachman Bruce during an interview in his book-lined study in the synagogue on Sunday.

He believes this is far more sinister. The star of David with the term “Juden”” conjures up memories of yellow stars Jews were forced to wear in Nazi Germany.

Two teen girls turn themselves in after probe into defacement of synagogue and another building in Wilkes-Barre.
JEN MARCKINI jmarckini@timesleader.com
WILKES-BARRE – Two teen girls – one a self-proclaimed Nazi – were arrested Thursday and charged with spray-painting the Ohav Zedek Synagogue and another building with anti-Semitic words and symbols.

18-year-old Nora Rynkeiwicz turned herself in to police on Thursday. Here, she is taken to jail after her arraignment on charges she spray-painted the Ohav Zedek Synagogue.

Nora Rynkeiwicz, 18, of Factoryville, and her 17-year-old juvenile friend, turned themselves in to police. Rynkeiwicz, a senior at Wyoming Valley West, told a judge she has been living with her grandmother in Plymouth for the past several years.

Dressed in baggy camouflage pants and Doc Martens black leather boots, Rynkeiwicz was taken to the Luzerne County Correctional Facility from District Judge William Amesbury’s courtroom after her arraignment late Thursday.

Rynkeiwicz’s parents, who sat two rows behind their red-headed daughter during the hearing, could not produce the $35,000 straight bail ordered by Amesbury.

Rynkeiwicz is charged with institutional vandalism, a third-degree felony, for spray-painting racist remarks and symbols on the Ohav Zedek Synagogue, 242 S. Franklin St., police said. She faces charges of criminal conspiracy for the graffiti on the temple and the vacant Mertz building on Conyngham Avenue.

“From the beginning, we knew that it wasn’t a random act of graffiti, that it was targeted toward the Jewish faith,”” said Wilkes-Barre police Detective Ronald Foy. “You’re not going to get words like that by any normal Average Joe walking down the street with a can of spray paint.””

The charges against the juvenile accomplice will be filed in the juvenile court system.

Police said swastikas and Nazi beliefs were found on Rynkeiwicz’s MySpace.com page.

On the garage door of 221 Conyngham was a swastika and the words “Hitler was right,”” which appeared to have been applied with the same copper-orange spray paint used on the temple.

The aerosol spray-paint cans were gathered as evidence during a search on Tuesday of the juvenile’s home on North Washington Street in Wilkes-Barre, according to police.

Rynkeiwicz was charged with separate misdemeanor counts of criminal conspiracy and criminal mischief for allegedly agreeing with the juvenile that they would both vandalize the synagogue and the Mertz building.

It was Monday evening when Detective Foy received a phone call. The person on the other end told the detective that he knew who committed the vandalism at the temple. He knew Rynkeiwicz for about a month. She told him she wears Nazi-related clothing to signify her membership.

The informant, who police did not identify, said Rynkeiwicz told him while on a school field trip on March 28 to the Irem Temple Shrine Circus that she would spray-paint swastikas on the synagogue that night.

It became the rumor in the high school halls by Monday. The story was the two females used orange and silver spray paint to mark the temple and Rynkeiwicz was wearing the same black leather high Doc Martens when she did the spray-painting.

The female juvenile admitted guilt to police, along with the involvement of Rynkeiwicz, who is allegedly a “Nazi”” follower.

The juvenile teen told police she has known Rynkeiwicz for several years and started to fall into her Nazi belief system. Rynkeiwicz was spending the night at the juvenile’s home the night of the vandalism that occurred during the early morning hours on Saturday.

Rynkeiwicz and the juvenile went to East End Liquidators and bought a can of copper spray paint.

The juvenile called her mother, who was with a relative at a hospital on that Friday night, and asked if they could go to Denny’s with a friend, Brandon Gawelko.

After they left Denny’s, Gawelko planned to go home, but before doing so he dropped them off a couple blocks down from the temple on South Franklin Street. They also asked him if he could pick them up a couple blocks the other way.

Police said Gawelko was not aware of the duo’s plans.

The juvenile told police she only had the silver paint and painted the Star of David on the front door. Rynkeiwicz is accused of doing the rest.

A $5,000 reward from the Greater Jewish Federation of Wyoming Valley is contingent on successful conviction. Police executed search warrants and recovered evidence, which included the spray paint cans used on the synagogue.

Don't get caught messin with the jews. They and their puppets will make sure you get the max.

Swastika Painted On Western Pa. Obama Sign

POSTED: 8:19 am EDT April 7, 2008
UPDATED: 8:26 am EDT April 7, 2008

INDIANA, Pa. -- State police said a swastika was spray-painted on a campaign sign for Sen. Barack Obama in an Indiana County couple's yard.

Kamal Youssef and his wife, Maria, said they found the defaced sign on Saturday.

According to police and an Obama campaign official, the incident appears to be isolated.

Youssef, 86, moved to the United States from Egypt decades ago and became a citizen in 1958. His wife is an immigrant from Czechoslovakia and is also a U.S. citizen.

Youssef is a sandnigger Muslim, while his wife identifies with the Christian Orthodox faith.

The couple told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette they don't believe they were personally targeted. They said neighbors in the Amish farming community of Dayton have known them for decades.

This story has no validity whatsoever. If so, the sandnigger would have sawed his wifes head off years ago. Their religion demands it.

'Remember Subway Beating' Spray-Painted On School

POSTED: 3:59 pm EDT April 9, 2008
UPDATED: 7:38 pm EDT April 9, 2008

PHILADELPHIA -- Racist and threatening graffiti was found scrawled all over a Philadelphia elementary school Wednesday morning.

It included the "N" word and a swastika.

Police and cleanup crews responded quickly to Mifflin School. But some parents were upset and angry over the building and schoolyard graffiti that was both racist and threatening.

The cleanup started after classes began. So some kindergarten through eighth graders saw the wall writings before they were covered.

There was a makeshift swastika, threats that said, "Remember the subway beating," and the N-word spray-painted over the schoolyard mural.

"So we found out through a neighbor of ours who drops her kids off. This was up here early this morning. And she didn't drop her kids off. She called us to let us know this was going on," nigger Tonia Rogers, of East Falls, said.

School officials are upset and parents are angry. Nigger Yvonne Burton came and picked up her 4-year-old daughter, Kyli.

"This is very scary. And I would rather be safe than sorry. And, you know, I just don't want anything to happen where, you know, I'll feel like, 'Oh, gosh,' you know. I should have pulled her when I first heard of this," Burton, of Germantown (Coontown), said.

"We need to have people who do these kinds of things to kids to be brought to justice, and have the community understand that we will not tolerate this kind of defacing of property," West Regional Superintendent Dr. Shirl Gilbert :NotK: said.

About a dozen parents took their children home but classes continued. Fresh paint covered the graffiti.

Police officers went door to door looking for any information that would lead to those responsible for the vandalism.

"They're some people in this neighborhood who are racists. And they still continue to raise their children that way. So, yes, it makes me sick," Coleen Moffitt, of East Falls, said.

Racist Graffiti Found In School District Twice In Week

POSTED: 4:53 pm EDT April 28, 2008
UPDATED: 7:04 pm EDT April 28, 2008

Signs of hatred were discovered inside the walls of a local elementary school and it's the second such incident in less than a week at the Lower Merion School District.

Vandalism and racist graffiti discovered at two Lower Merion schools last week have some parents outraged.

One mother said she was so upset, that she's not sure if she'll let her fifth-grade son return to class.

School officials said several fifth-grade students discovered racist words on a bathroom wall and also two Nazi swastikas.

"I was very surprised that an incident would have happened like that here at the school. Quite honestly I was taken back," Martha Watson, a parent, said.

School officials said the students discovered the racist graffiti last Thursday and pointed it out to their teachers.

Within minutes, administrators contacted police and parents.

"The principal at Gladwyne recorded a message and that went home to the parents of all students via phone," Doug Young, of Lower Merion School District, said.

On Monday, Gladwyne's principal sent a letter home with students, informing parents of the incident.

"It was alarming especially given the fact that there was something at Penn Wynne, as well," Jeff Donoho, a parent, said.

Parents with children attending Penn Wynne Elementary said school officials sent them a letter last Tuesday.

Lower Merion School District officials said someone used chalk to draw a swastika on the school building.

"The swastika is the most offensive symbol you can use against the Jews," Barry Morrison, of the Anti- Defamation League, said.

Both incidents happened during the week of Passover. But no one is saying if the incidents were connected to the Jewish holy week.

However, school officials did contact the Anti-Defamation League. :NotK:

"In this instance I think that the school and the principal have handled this appropriately," Morrison said. "There needs to be some type of punishment for what they did but they also need to be helped to understand what they did wrong learn to understand."

Lower Merion police were seen back at the school Monday. But they did not comment.

One Gladwyne parent said she's discussed the issue with her son.

"He's just 9 years old so we didn't dwell on it but he understands how important it is to show tolerance for others, tolerance and respect for others," Watson said.

PARKLAND, Fla. -- A boy on his way to school Wednesday discovered messages of hate spray-painted in black at a Parkland synagogue.

It happened sometime overnight at the Chabad of Parkland, located at 7170 Loxahatchee Road.

Rabbi Yosef Binton said the temple has had two locations in Parkland over the last 12 years, but he's never seen anything like this before.

"It's a friendly neighborhood, a nice neighborhood," Binton said. "It's very difficult to understand, but hate can come from anywhere."

Three swastikas, the word "heil" and a stop sign in the parking lot with "4 Hitler" spray-painted on it are obvious evidence of a hate crime, according to Broward County Sheriff Al Lamberti.

"This is a despicable act that should offend everyone in Broward County and in our community, and it shouldn't be tolerated," he said.

Andy Rosenkranz with the Anti-Defamation League said these types of incidents where symbols are used to display hate have been on the rise in Florida in the past few days.

"This new symbolism is a trend that we're seeing, and it's terrible," he said.

Swastika Found On Stall In Main Line School

POSTED: 8:33 pm EDT June 2, 2008
UPDATED: 11:31 pm EDT June 2, 2008

A message of hate resurfaced Monday inside a Lower Merion elementary school.

Officials said someone found a swastika on a stall in a Penn Wynne Elementary School boys' bathroom. A spokesman for the school district said nothing was ever found inside the school before

A letter was sent home, and every family was called, as per policy, the spokesman said.

It's not the first sign of hatred  at a school in the Lower Merion School District. Last month, there were two similar incidents.

Fifth-graders at in Gladwyne Elementary School found racist words and Nazi symbols on a bathroom wall. And someone used chalk to draw a swastika on Penn Wynne Elementary Scho
ol.

School officials believe students were responsible in both cases.

Playground Built In Memory Of Mother, Daughter Vandalized

POSTED: 6:52 pm EDT August 13, 2008
UPDATED: 8:57 pm EDT August 13, 2008

LIMERICK, Pa. -- The Manderach playground was shut down when police noticed graffiti and racial slurs painted on the walkways and sliding boards.

Police said the vandals struck between Monday night and Tuesday morning.

The graffiti was cleaned and the park reopened Wednesday.

Neighbors were outraged, especially since the park stands in memory of two Limerick residents.

Lisa Manderach and her 18-month-old daughter Devon were killed in 1995 inside a children's clothing store in Collegeville.

Devon's body was found in Valley Forge National Park. Her mother's body was found days later behind a strip mall in King of Prussia.

Th
eir killer is serving two life sentences.

Police said they believe the graffiti artists are teenagers because of references to high school.

The damage was severe enough to warrant felony charges, police said.

"I certainly hope they catch them," said Joan Moyer, of Schwenksville. "I just don' t know what fun they thought it was to destroy something like this."

Swastikas scrawled on hay bales in Marysville field

bilde

MARYSVILLE – More than 40 swastikas have been scrawled on white-plastic sheeting used to cover hay bales in a field off I-5 in Marysville.

The swastikas, a symbol of anti-Semitism, were reported to the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office on Sunday by a passerby, spokeswoman Rebecca Hover said.

“It’s ugly and no one likes to see this in our community," Hover said.

The field where the swastikas were found is off 34th Avenue NE just south of 136th Street NE. The swastikas are visible from the southbound lanes of the freeway.

Property owners first
learned of the graffiti from a reporter on Monday.

The farmer contracted to take care of the field will be asked to remove the vandalism immediately, said Woody MacLeod, a spokesman for MacAngus Ranches Inc, which owns the land.

"He should get that out of there so it's out of the way," MacLeod said.

Dozens of covered hay bales dot the nearly 60-acre property. As many as 40 of the bales had swastikas.

"This is a disturbing event for the Jewish community as it is when any religious or ethnic group is targeted," said Janis Warner
, president of Temple Beth Or in Everett. “We have trust in the authorities to investigate this vandalism to its full extent, ensuring the safety of individuals and property."

Making arrests in vandalism cases can be difficult, Hover said.

“Unless we get some information about a possible suspect, there isn’t much more we can do at this point," she said.
