PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — U.S. Marshals have arrested a man who was wanted in a hit-and-run that left a man and his dog dead in North Philadelphia. Officials arrested 33-year-old Khalif Moore on Wednesday.

On Oct. 26, police say Moore struck and killed 26-year-old Michael Canals while he was walking his dog on the 700 block of West Berks Street. Canals’ dog also died.

27-Year-Old Father Sentenced To 7 Years In Prison For Driving Under Influence In Crash That Killed 4-Year-Old Son
By CBS3 Staff
December 12, 2019 at 1:58 pm

MOUNT LAUREL, N.J. (CBS) — A 27-year-old man was sentenced to seven years in prison for driving under the influence which caused the crash that killed his 4-year-old son and injured the boy’s twin brother. The Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office says Ossie Thomas has to serve 85% of his sentence before he can become eligible for parole.

Thomas pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide, endangering the welfare of a child, and driving while intoxicated in June.

An investigation began after Willingboro Township police officers were called to the area of Rancocas Road and Primrose Lane for a motor vehicle crash just before 2 p.m. on Jan. 8.

Detectives found Thomas was speeding when he lost control of the vehicle and ended up in a wooded area near the intersection.

One of the twin boys was pronounced dead an hour after the crash at a local hospital and the other was treated for a traumatic brain injury at Cooper University Medical Center in Camden.

Toxicology reports showed he had marijuana in his system and a blood alcohol content of .125%.

“Yet again, we are confronted with a scenario where a child’s life was lost due to a parent’s decision to get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol,” Burlington County Prosecutor Scott Coffina said. “I urge everyone to think ahead about transportation when planning to have adult beverages. Choose a designated driver, call a cab, or use a ride-sharing or ride-hailing service. It’s as easy as sending a text.”

Thomas was sentenced in Superior Court and ordered to report to the Burlington County Jail on Jan. 3.

2 Die in High-Speed Crash Where Intoxicated Driver Ran Red Light, Police Say
A man faces DUI and homicide by vehicle charges
By Brandon Hudson and Rudy Chinchilla • Published December 15, 2019 • Updated 15 mins ago

Police say the speeding driver of a Chevrolet Malibu ran a red light and collided with a Nissan correctly...

A teenager and woman are dead after a high-speed crash that may have involved alcohol in Northeast Philadelphia’s Tacony neighborhood, police said.

The crash near Cottman and Torresdale avenues happened around 2:45 a.m. Sunday, when a speeding Chevrolet Malibu ran a red light and was T-boned by a Nissan Maxima, which had the right of way, Philadelphia Police Department Capt. Mark Overwise said.

Two men were in the Chevrolet and four women were in the Nissan when the cars collided, ejecting at least one person, Overwise said.
Local

The women are all in their late 20s to early 30s, the captain said. One of them, Ciara "Little Bits" Parker, died at the scene, while the male passenger of the Chevrolet – 18-year-old Rashaan Cole – later died at a hospital.

The cars collided with such force that one car was flung toward a school near the intersection and flipped onto its hood. At least one of the cars struck and broke a utility pole, with debris strewn on the street.

Both men in the Chevrolet were taken to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital, Overwise said. The three injured women, including the driver and the car owner who was riding in the back, were taken to other area hospitals with various injuries.

The Chevrolet driver, 27-year-old Nehamiah Carstephen, broke his arm in the crash, police said. He was Cole's uncle.

Carstephen was charged with homicide by vehicle, DUI, aggravated assault and related charges, police said. It is unclear if he has an attorney who could comment on his behalf.

Driver Charged With DUI After Violent Crash Left 2 Dead In Northeast Philadelphia
By CBS3 Staff
December 16, 2019 at 12:56 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Police have identified some of the victims in a violent weekend crash that left two people dead in Northeast Philadelphia. Police say 27-year-old Nehamiah Carstephen sped through a red light early Sunday morning when he collided with another car at Torresdale and Cottman Avenues.

Relatives say Carstephen is in the Army Reserve and National Guard. He faces multiple charges, including driving under the influence and homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence.

Four people were in the car that was hit and one of the passengers, 29-year-old Ciara Parker, was killed.

Carstephen’s 18-year-old nephew, Rashaan Cole, also died in the crash.

Investigators now have surveillance video showing the crash.

“We recovered some video and we are still looking for more video. We don’t have any scientific analysis yet as to what the speed was,” Philadelphia Police Capt. Mark Overwise said. “From the video, it is evident it was a high rate of speed.”

Carstephen is still in the hospital and is expected to be arraigned from his bedside.

A drunk driver struck and killed a pedestrian in East Harlem, cops said Wednesday.

The fatal crash happened just after 5 p.m. Tuesday when 23-year-old Farkell Hopkins slammed his Safelite auto windshield repair truck into the man, who was crossing E. 125th Street near Madison Avenue mid-block, according to police.

The victim, whose name was not immediately released, died at the scene.

Hopkins stayed at the scene and was arrested, police said.

The Queens man faces charges of vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated, according to cops.

A man who allegedly hit and killed a pedestrian while driving drunk in East Harlem is back on the streets for now — thanks to the state’s new criminal justice reforms, authorities said Thursday.

Farkell Hopkins, 23, was arrested on charges of vehicular manslaughter and DWI at the scene of the deadly New Year’s Eve collision, but was cut loose before he was even arraigned.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s office said prosecutors still intend to pursue the case, but they now have to ensure they’re able to turn over all their evidence to Hopkins’ defense team within a tight 15-day time-frame, thanks to new soft-on-crime laws that went into effect Jan. 1.

“This driver will be prosecuted,” said Danny Frost, spokesman for Manhattan DA Cy Vance.

“Under the new mandates, prosecutors must obtain and provide charged persons with a variety of materials within 15 days of arraignment,” he continued. “Accordingly, in a number of cases, prosecutors will defer charges until they are confident that discovery obligations can be fulfilled within fifteen days of arraignment on those charges.”

But even when Hopkins is arraigned, he will likely be freed into the community once again if the charges don’t change — as vehicular manslaughter is among the more than 400 offenses that are no longer bail-eligible under the sweeping criminal justice reforms, sources told The Post.

Behind the wheel of a Safelite AutoGlass truck, Hopkins allegedly plowed into a man jaywalking across East 125th Street near Madison Avenue around 5:10 p.m. Tuesday, according to police.

The violent impact sent the victim flying several feet down the East Harlem street, surveillance video obtained by The Post shows.

The victim, who was pronounced dead on the scene, had not been identified by investigators as of late Thursday because he was not carrying any ID at the time, police sources said.

Hopkins stayed at the scene and was administered a breathalyzer test by cops, which allegedly revealed a sky-high .16 blood-alcohol content — twice the legal limit of .08, according to sources.

Word of Hopkins’ release incensed NYPD insiders.

“They’re f–king letting everybody go,” fumed one source. “They’re letting everyone go home.”

But defense attorneys defended the new laws.

“Whenever there’s a major criminal-justice policy [reform] everyone has to recalibrate,” said Michael Discioarro, a former Bronx DA turned criminal-defense attorney.

“When Miranda v. Arizona came out, everybody predicted Armageddon,” added Discioarro, referring to the landmark 1966 ruling that required police to issue so-called Miranda warnings to suspects. “Now look what happened, police adjusted.”

Hopkins could not be reached for comment Thursday, and provided cops with an address in Queens that is actually an office for Safelite, an Ohio-based company specializing in the repair and insurance of windshields and other auto glass.

“We are deeply saddened to hear the news of this accident and our thoughts go out to the families involved,” said Safelite spokeswoman Keri Lucas.

Lucas noted that Safelite is “fully cooperating with the police,” but declined to say whether the allegedly hammered Hopkins was on the clock for the company at the time.

Video shows alleged drunk driver fleeing from Ferndale police, then crashing into tree

FERNDALE, Mich. (WXYZ) — A man was arrested by Ferndale police after he fled during a traffic stop, initiating a police pursuit.

On Jan. 7, police say Brently Bohanen was stopped just after 1 a.m. in the area of Eight Mile Road, just west of Woodward Avenue after police say he was speeding.

During the stop, Bohanen handed over his license. Police then asked to do a search and run him through a few tests to determine if he was capable of driving. Bohanen is seen on video closing his window as police ask him not to.

Officers ask him to leave the window down and open the door to step out of the car. Bohanen continues to close the window, then eventually starts his car and drives away.

There was a short pursuit before Bohanen crashed into a tree outside a home in the area of LeRoy and Pinecrest. He then fled on foot and was later captured by police.

Bohanen is charged with operating while intoxicated, fleeing police and driving on a suspended license.

A man who allegedly struck and killed a pedestrian while driving drunk in East Harlem on New Year’s Eve was released without bail at his Tuesday arraignment — as prosecutors revealed he tried to ditch several bottles of booze before cops arrived.

Farkell Hopkins, 23, is accused of chucking a cardboard box full of empty and filled liquor bottles near the scene of the fatal crash on East 125th Street near Madison Avenue that left an unidentified man in his 40s dead.

There had been a three-week gap between Hopkins’s arrest and his arraignment thanks to the state’s new criminal justice reforms that require prosecutors to turn over evidence to defense teams within a 15-day time-frame.

Those same reforms enabled Hopkins to remain out of jail, despite facing a number of charges, including vehicular manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide and tampering with physical evidence.

Hopkins pleaded not guilty to all charges.

He was allegedly speeding when he plowed into the victim, who was jaywalking near the East Harlem intersection, prosecutors said. The victim was sent flying 100 feet down the street from the impact and pronounced dead on scene.

“The defendant was driving a work vehicle, he purchased the liquor that he drank on work hours, and he killed this victim on work hours while he was driving this vehicle,” Assistant District Attorney Courtney Razner said in court Tuesday.

Police also discovered more liquor bottles inside Hopkins’ Safelite AutoGlass work truck.

His defense attorney, Dave Krauss, said after his arraignment, “He is presumed innocent and we have faith in the judicial process.”

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - An arrest has been made after two people were killed during a crash Sunday night.

Officers responded to the fatal crash at the intersection of South Third Street and Raines Road.

MPD said Charles Jones, 38, was driving northbound on South Third Street when he drove into the center lane into opposing traffic to make a left-hand turn. Police said he disregarded the red light then crashed into the victim’s vehicle.

The victims were taken to Regional One in critical condition but did not survive their injuries.

Jones told police he smoked weed before the crash because he was upset about Kobe Bryant’s death.

Police watched security camera footage that showed Jones crossing over the middle lanes at a high rate of speed.

Investigators have identified the two killed as Sonja Roser, 54, and Christopher Hunt, 51.

Homeless woman goes on carjacking spree before crashing near City Hall
By Ruth Weissmann
February 1, 2020 | 10:24am

It’s The Fast & The Furious: FDR.

A joyriding homeless woman was busted following a wild carjacking spree across Manhattan in which she stole three different cars — flipping one on the FDR highway — and plowed into at least 18 other vehicles before crashing near City Hall, police said Saturday.

Aludein Marks, 25, kicked off the Grant Theft Auto-like stunt at about 7:15 p.m. Friday near the intersection of 5th Avenue and 74th Street, where she ordered a stunned motorist out of a gray Mercedes Benz sedan and took the wheel, authorities said.

She then drove south toward the FDR, striking an occupied car near East 68th Street and York Avenue and another near East 62nd Street and 2nd Avenue without slowing down.

Marks then ditched her first ride and commandeered a black Mercedes Benz G-class SUV, ordering its frightened driver out of the car.

The maniac motorist slammed into a Toyota Corolla near 34th Street, flipping the $130,900 Benz in the process, police said.

Undeterred, Marks jumped out and jacked a third set of wheels, a silver Toyota Camry, and took off, plowing into at least 15 other cars as she sped downtown.

She finally crashed that car into a barrier across from City Hall, where cops caught up to her and placed her under arrest.

Marks—who has a long rap sheet of at least four felonies and 13 misdemeanors, sources said—was hit was a slew of charges, including three counts of robbery, four counts of grand larceny auto, driving while intoxicated, and operating a vehicle while drug-impaired.

She has been homeless since her last stint at the Vernon C. Bain Correctional Center in the Bronx, according to authorities.

Marks was taken to New York Presbyterian-Lower Manhattan Hospital for observation. No one was seriously hurt in the wild spree.

Driver facing felony murder charge after his 4th DWI leads to fatal crash, deputies say
Jeffery Davis, 57, is facing a minimum of five years in prison for the crash.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A man will be charged with felony murder after a deadly crash in northwest Houston on Sunday evening, deputies said.

The crash happened before 8 p.m. on Bammel N. Houston at Champion Forest.

Deputies believe the driver of a gray pickup was taking a left turn when he struck the driver of a black pickup truck head-on. The driver in the black pickup was killed.

The man in the gray pickup appeared to be heavily intoxicated, deputies said. He was taken to the hospital for his injuries in the wreck.

Authorities later identified the suspect as Jeffery Davis, 57.

Records show this would be his fourth DWI arrest, and he'll face a felony murder charge for Sunday's crash.

Sean Teare, chief of the Vehicular Crimes Division in Harris County, said the district attorney's office would be looking to find where the suspect bought alcohol or where he was possibly overserved.

"What we have here is somebody who has been convicted three times before of DWI – continues to do it," said Teare. "And this always the final outcome. When people continue to do this, we have these tragedies. At the end of the day, this person is facing a minimum of five [years] to maximum of life in prison."

The victim's identity has not yet been released.

Records show that on top of his DWI convictions in 1995, 1997 and 2014, the suspect has also previously been arrested for other criminal charges, including assault on a family member.

Homeless carjacker who went on crime spree held on $100K bail
By Reuven Fenton and Craig McCarthy
February 2, 2020 | 6:31pm

The homeless carjacker who went on a crime spree, speeding through Manhattan in high-end cars was ordered held on $100,000 bail by a judge on Sunday.

Aludein Marks “went on what can only be described as a crime spree … starting on Fifth Avenue in the 70s and ending at City Hall,” Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Ana Sophia Radolinski said during her arraignment.

“She stole four different vehicles … pushing one driver out of a car and dragging him for a few seconds,” Radolinski said. “She caused mayhem on the FDR, hitting multiple cars in the median before flipping her own car.”

The 25-year-old, wearing yellow pants and a green camo hoodie, appeared in Manhattan Criminal Court Sunday afternoon before Judge Thomas Farber, who set bail.

Marks, who allegedly admitted to being drunk and high on cocaine on Friday evening, stole four cars — including three Mercedes-Benzes — and smashed into nearly 20 vehicles, according to authorities.

The 30-minute spree, authorities say, started at Fifth Avenue and E. 74th Street where she jumped in the passenger seat of a Mercedes-Benz, forced the driver out and barreled down the road toward the FDR.

After she smashed her first Benz, she hopped in a black G-class SUV and headed down the FDR service road before smashing another high-end whip near E. 34th Street, police said.

Marks then boosted her third Benz and drove the luxury vehicle down to E. 26th Street — where cops said she jacked her fourth ride, a silver Toyota Camry.

The joyride came to an end around 7:45 p.m. near City Hall where she crashed into a barrier, according to police.

She was arrested and charged with three counts of robbery, four counts of grand larceny auto, driving while intoxicated and operating a vehicle while drug-impaired.

The man accused of killing a 20-month-old girl in September on a Bronx sidewalk after his SUV jumped a curb has been hit with a new charge of leaving the scene of an accident without reporting it to authorities.

Kier Boneparte, 22, was indicted on the new charge on Tuesday and released on his own recognizance, according to a news release from the Bronx District Attorney’s Office.

Boneparte was initially charged with criminally negligent homicide after the fatal Sept. 17, 2019 collision that killed Djeneba Magassa while her mother was feeding the tot in her stroller.

But the Bronx DA has added the more serious charge of leaving the scene of an accident, which carries a maximum prison sentence of seven years if Boneparte is convicted.

The maximum sentence for negligent homicide is four years in prison.

The DA says that Boneparte was driving a 2002 BMW SUV on Sept. 17, 2019 in the Williamsbridge section.

He lost control of the vehicle at East 215th Street and White Plains Road, hit an empty car and slammed into Djeneba, pinning her against a wall.

Boneparte allegedly left the scene of the crash on foot and was arrested after he was spotted by NYPD officers, the DA alleges.

Boneparte is due back in court on March 31.

An attorney for Boneparte did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Police: Teen Facing Charges For Fiery Hit-And-Run Crash On Schuylkill Expressway That Killed Tractor-Trailer Driver
By Howard Monroe
May 6, 2020 at 5:45 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A teenager is facing charges for a fiery crash on the Schuylkill Expressway that killed a tractor-trailer driver. The wreck happened early Wednesday morning in the eastbound lanes near Sweet Briar Drive.

State police are classifying the fatal crash as a hit-and-run accident causing death. The driver is 19 years old.

Authorities identified him as Zamir Abdul-Johnson Selby of Philadelphia.

Police say he was driving a stolen Toyota Yaris when he overshot the Girard Avenue exit. He then put the car in reverse on the highway, lost control and hit the tractor-trailer, investigators say.

That is when, police say, the driver of the tractor-trailer lost control, hit the barrier and burst into flames.

A portion of the tractor-trailer flipped off the highway, landing on Sweet Briar Drive at the intersection of Landsdowne Drive.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was identified as a 54-year-old man from Jacksonville, Florida.

It took crews two hours to put out the fire.

While portions of the roadway were charred, state police say the fire only caused superficial damage to the roadway.

Inspectors say the roadway is safe for travel.

Three people were in the Yaris, police say. They all left the scene and later would up at Penn Presbyterian Trauma Center. It’s not clear how they got to the hospital or their relation to each other.

The 19-year-old driver is facing multiple charges, including homicide by vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident and driving under the influence.

It’s not clear where the tractor-trailer was traveling to or coming from. It’s also unclear if the other people in the car will face charges.

LORAIN, Ohio — A woman is in critical condition and a man is in custody following a crash in Lorain on Tuesday night after police said that he struck her with a Ford Explorer while she was getting into her vehicle.

The crash happened just after 10 p.m. in the 1900 block of Long Avenue.

According to the Lorain Police Department, Ja’Quon Moon, 22, of Lorain, was arrested and charged with the following:

Aggravated vehicular assault
Operating vehicle while intoxicated
Implied consent to test
Leaving the scene of an accident
Reckless operation
No driver’s license
Obstructing official business

Moon was driving a 2005 Ford Explorer and was involved in a crash near West 20th Street and Oberlin Avenue and then fled the scene heading towards Long Avenue where he later crashed into a 41-year-old woman getting into her Mazda minivan, authorities said.

The woman was wedged in between her minivan and the Explorer, police said. The impact severed the woman’s leg.

Moon then “disengaged from the Mazda” and continued fleeing until the SUV stopped near Long Avenue and West 18th Street where officers took him into custody, police said.

A good Samaritan, later identified as Desmond Nicholson, came across the scene and, after finding the woman on the ground, used a make-shift tourniquet on her to stop her from bleeding out. Lorain Police Officer Brent Payne arrived and placed additional tourniquets on her and provided first aid until EMS arrived.

The woman was transported to a nearby hospital and then flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland for treatment, authorities said. The woman was last known to be in critical condition.

Possible DWI suspect on parole kills 2 innocent people during chase, deputies say
5/26/2020

A DWI suspect is charged with two counts of felony murder after he hit and killed two innocent people during a chase in north Harris County, officials say.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office says that around 9 p.m. Monday, one of their deputies clocked a driver in a Mercedes at 60 mph in a 45 mph zone southbound near the 10000 block of Veterans Memorial.

The driver has been identified as 31-year-old Alexis Saborit.

Officials say the deputy tried to pull over Saborit, who kept going, sparking the chase.

At one point during the chase, Saborit went the wrong way, crossing the median to go into the northbound lanes.

Deputies say Saborit eventually slammed into 63-year-old bicyclist Jarvis Taylor and kept going. Saborit then hit an innocent 57-year-old driver in a Buick head-on.

Unfortunately, Taylor lost his leg in the crash and later died at the hospital.

The Buick driver was flown to the hospital, where he also died. He has not been identified.

Saborit was taken to Ben Taub Hospital with serious injuries.

"Unfortunately, the reckless decision of this Mercedes operator... He decided to go into oncoming traffic thinking that he could evade our deputy, and it ended up being a very tragic night for two adults and two families, actually three counting the Mercedes family," said HCSO Sgt. Simon Cheng.

The deputy was not hurt.

According to officials, Saborit showed signs of impairment. He also allegedly admitted to investigators that he fled because he's wanted for an open parole violator warrant.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS/AP) – Police have filed charges against the 19-year-old driver of an SUV that rear-ended another vehicle and then struck a pregnant woman sitting on a wall in North Philadelphia on Monday. The crash critically injured the woman and killed her baby.

Police said Tuesday 19-year-old Yaaseen Bivines was charged with 3rd-degree murder of an unborn child as well as aggravated assault, driving under the influence and other counts.

Police say two vehicles were “engaged in a street race or chase” at high speed past the Temple University campus on Broad Street just before 5 a.m. Monday. They say an SUV rear-ended the other vehicle, which hit a tree, and the SUV jumped the curb and struck the woman who was sitting with two males on a low concrete wall.

Police said the 27-year-old woman, who was seven months pregnant, was taken to Temple University Hospital, where her baby was delivered and later pronounced dead just before 9:30 a.m. Monday. The woman was listed in extremely critical condition. Six passengers in the vehicles were seriously injured.

Bivines was ordered held on $1 million bail. It’s unclear whether he has an attorney and a listed number for him couldn’t be found Tuesday.
