Nigga Gets 3-5 For Scalding Infant Son

OMAHA, Neb. -- An Omaha man is going to prison for intentionally burning his infant son.

Sharmar Dortch was convicted of felony child abuse. On Thursday, he was sentenced to three to five years in prison.

Dortch's 4-month-old son, Marcell, had second-degree burns over 22 percent of his body after being put in scalding water, prosecutors said.

With time served, Dortch could be out of prison in less than a year.

ELYRIA — A Lorain man pleaded guilty Friday to scalding his 4-year-old daughter in a bathtub.

Spencer Hamlin Jr.’s guilty pleas to charges of felonious assault and endangering children could send him to prison for eight years when he is sentenced later this year.

Hamlin’s attorney, Laura Perkovic, said in exchange for Hamlin’s plea, prosecutors will remain silent at the sentencing hearing, but she acknowledged that the charges themselves carry the presumption that Hamlin will serve time instead of being given probation.

“The big battle will be in sentencing in this case,"� she said.

A preschool teacher noticed burns and open sores on the back of Hamlin’s daughter in January 2007 when the girl raised her shirt to scratch the wounds. She had returned to the school after a month-long absence, and authorities discovered older, healed burns on her arms and sides.

The girl told police her father had dipped her in hot water twice and bit her finger because she lied about something. Hamlin told police that he didn’t take the girl for medical treatment because he didn’t have any gas in his van.

Hamlin had custody of the girl for only about six months when the injuries occurred. His family insisted that the injuries were an accident or the girl had injured herself and was lying when she blamed her father.

Perkovic said she couldn’t comment on whether the incident was an accident until the sentencing hearing. She said it was in Hamlin’s best interest to take the plea because if he went to trial and lost, prosecutors would have argued for a lengthy prison sentence instead of remaining silent.

As it is, county Common Pleas Judge James Miraldi will be given photos of the girl’s injuries before the sentencing.

Hamlin remains free on bond.

ROCKVILLE, Md. -- Montgomery County police are investigating the scalding of a 6-month-old girl in Rockville Tuesday.

The incident took place at a home in the 13600 block of Midway Avenue. Police said they plan to execute a search warrant at the home in order to find information and evidence that can help them determine if it was a crime or an accident.

Police said they were called to the home Tuesday morning. They said the baby was scalded with hot water. She was airlifted to Children's Hospital, where she is undergoing treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

That was two years ago. Her 27-year-old former caretaker was found guilty last week of two counts of aggravated child abuse and will be sentenced May 12.

Sows charged in scalding of turdler

A young Rock Island boy apparently scalded by hot water last week was being treated Monday for third-degree burns over much of his lower body.

The toddler, younger than 2 years, suffered burns over 37 percent of his body, Rock Island Police Capt. Scott Harris said. He declined to discuss how the child received the burns, but said investigators don't believe it was an accident.

The child is being treated at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, he said. Hospital staff Monday could not provide information about the victim.

About 1 p.m. Friday, police were called to Century Woods Apartments, 1400 5th St., Rock Island, and found the injured child, who police said appeared to have been intentionally scalded.

The baby was taken to Trinity Medical Center's West Campus, Rock Island, before being transferred to Iowa City.

The boy's mother, LaTasha S. Spencer, 21, and Krystal D. Swift, 22, both of Century Woods, face charges related to the boy’s injuries, Capt. Harris said.

Both women have been accused of aggravated battery of a child, a Class X felony, and are being held on $1 million bail, according to court records and the Rock Island County Jail.

Johnstown Woman Charged With Scalding Baby

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -- Police charged Tawsha Hamer, 30, with aggravated and simple assault after he burned a one-year-old girl in her care by placing the child in a tub of hot water.

A 10-year-old who was inside the Solomon Homes apartment at the time told police that the baby was screaming and kicking, trying to get out of the tub.

When the child's father returned home from work, he noticed the baby's ankles and feet were blistered and the skin was peeling and bleeding.

The child is at the West Penn Burn Center in Pittsburgh with second-degree burns to her ankles and feet. She also has first-degree burns on her buttocks and genitalia.

Her condition has not been released.

Hamer is in jail on $75,000 bail.

CLEVELAND -- A local man is accused of scalding his girlfriend's toddler on over 40 percent of his body.

Officials said Herbert Jamison, 22, was arrested Thursday night at his Cleveland home.

The incident, which occurred in Pittsburgh, happened Wednesday when Jamison was watching the boy, according to newsnet5's online news partner, WTAE.

According to police, the toddler soiled his pants and Jamison attempted to bathe him.

Police also accused Jamison of slapping the child because he had a perforated eardrum.

Woman found guilty of microwaving baby

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) -- A mother was convicted Friday of killing her month-old daughter by burning her in a microwave oven, with jurors rejecting a defense attorney's claims there was evidence that someone else was responsible.

China Arnold is convicted of killing her baby by burning her in the microwave.


China Arnold, 28, showed no reaction when the jury's verdict was announced and then lowered her head, looking down at the defense table.

Relatives in the courtroom cried and covered their faces with their hands.

She was found guilty of aggravated murder and faces the death penalty when sentenced.

Arnold was ac
cused of killing daughter Paris Talley in 2005. A judge declared a mistrial in February, and the retrial began August 18.

Jury deliberations started Thursday following closing arguments.

Prosecutors said Arnold intentionally put her baby in the microwave oven and cooked the child to death after a fight with her boyfriend.

Arnolds' cell mate testified that Arnold confessed to putting the baby in the microwave and turned it on because she was worried her boyfriend would leave her if he found out the child wasn't his.

The baby's DNA was found inside the microwave in Arnold's apartment, prosecutors said.

Defense attorney Jon Paul Rion said there was evidence someone else was responsible.

He cited testimony from an 8-year-old boy who said he saw another boy walk into the kitchen of a nearby apartment with the baby, heard the microwave go on, and then later saw the burned baby in the microwave.

Judge John Kessler declared a mistrial February 11 after he privatel
y heard testimony from the juvenile.

In rebuttal, however, the 8-year-old's mother testified Wednesday that they lived some distance away and they were not at Arnold's apartment complex when the baby died.

Her former live-in boyfriend also testified that he was certain the boy was not at the location.

Memphis Man Accused of Burning his Baby in Anger while Bathing the Child

MEMPHIS, TN - Police say a Memphis man is accused of scalding his 10 month-old baby because he was mad about bathing the child.

Authorities say it happened in the 3200 block of Coleman, Monday, September 8, 2008.

According to Major Joe Scott with the Memphis Police Department, 26 year-old Mauricus Dejuan Coleman became angry when the child’s mother asked him to give the 10 month-old a bath. Coleman then put the baby in hot water, scalding the child, said Major Scott.

The baby was taken to Le Bonheur Children’s Medial Center for second degree burns.

ABILENE, Texas -- A woman accused of scalding her twin infants in the bathtub because one of them soiled his diaper was indicted Thursday.

Shanobia Elaine Dilligard, 21, faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted of injury to a child, a first-degree felony.

The boy and girl, then 8 months old, suffered second- and third-degree burns on their legs and buttocks in March, the Abilene Reporter-News reported in Thursday online editions.

Someone changing the baby girl’s diaper noticed burns on her legs and buttocks, and the child was then flown to a Dallas hospital with her brother.

It is not clear if the children’s father, stationed at Dyess Air Force Base, was home at the time of the incident.

Dilligard originally told police that she placed her infant son in the bath before checking the temperature, according to documents filed in the case. She said she discovered the water was too hot after putting in her daughter, denying that she was injured.

Doctors examining the boy said his burn patterns did not match the woman’s story. Dilligard later told police she put her infant son under running hot water because he had “messed up his diaper,”� the documents said.

A doctor reported that the twins’ injuries appeared to have been inflicted, according to documents.

Child Protective Services has said that the infant girl previously suffered from a fractured femur and two broken ribs.

CPS took custody of the twins and their older sister, then 19 months old, but it’s not clear if the children are still in foster care.

A telephone number for Dilligard could not be found. She had not been booked into the Taylor County Jail as of early Thursday evening, according to a jail spokesman.
