Man charged with scalding 1-year-old boy
September 23, 2009 3:22 PM |

Travis-WASHINGTONthisone.jpg

A 20-year-old Chicago man was ordered held on bond today after being charged with scalding his girlfriend's 1-year-old son, authorities said.

Travis Washington of the 10900 block of South Wabash Avenue was charged with aggravated battery of a child, endangering the life and health of a child and domestic battery, said Chicago News Affairs Officer Robert Perez.

He was ordered held on $150,000 bond today by Circuit Court Judge Ramon Ocasio III, said Andrew Conklin, a spokesman for the Cook County state's attorney.

On Sept. 21, at about 10 a.m. police responded to Washington's home after being called about a domesti
c disturbance, said Perez.

When police arrived they found that Washington's 19-year-old girlfriend had been battered by Washington, Perez said.

As police investigated they discovered that the woman's 1-year-old son had "visible marks or burns", Perez said. The girlfriend told police that Washington had scalded the boy when he was taking care of him on Sept. 18, at about 1 p.m.

Perez said the man scalded him in hot water, leaving burns to his legs, buttocks and lower back. The boy had not been treated for his injuries, Perez said.

According to prosecutors the boy went to the bathroom on the floor of the home of Washington and the girlfriend, said Conklin. Washington got angry and took the boy and put the boy in a sink which only had hot water running. The baby's bottom was put in hot water in for between three to four minutes. While in the water the baby was squirming and crying in pain, Conklin said.

When the baby was taken out of the water Washingon saw redness and blis
tering and the boys skin peeled off when the man rubbed a towel over him, Conklin said.

The child was not taken to a hospital until Sept. 21, the day police responded to the domestic disturbance call, officials said.

A University of Chicago Medical Center doctor said the boy suffered 2nd degree burns which were consistent with the boy being "held in burning water,'' Conklin said.

Kendall Marlowe, a spokesman for the Department of Child and Family Services said they are investigating the allegations. He said a toddler has been removed from the home and is in the custody of family members. The office has had no other contact with the family.

Trial Begins For Man Accused In Child's Burning

Uncle Accused Of Intentionally Burning Niece In Tub

Michael Oye-Adeniran

HOWARD COUNTY, Md. -- Opening statements began Tuesday in the trial of a Howard County man accused of intentionally burning his 2-year-old niece.

Michael Oye-Adeniran, 38, is accused of putting the now 3-year-old toddler in a tub of scalding hot water and leaving her there, despite her screams. A grand jury indictment charged him with child abuse that resulted in physical injury, assault and reckless endangerment.

In court, Oye-Adeniran admitted to leaving the toddler unattended but claimed he's not responsible for the second- and third-degree burns she suffered.

He claimed that in October 2008, he was giving the girl a bath in his home in the 9200 block of Traders Crossing in Laurel.

According to court charging documents, the water temperature was luke warm and that he left it running in a slow drizzle and went outside to talk to a friend for a few minutes. When he came back, he said he heard the victim screaming, that she was splashing around and that there was smoke in the bathroom coming from the tub.

Oye-Adeniran said he splashed cold water on her legs, smeared ointment on them and wrapped them in a bandage. Court documents showed he watched a video online about burn treatment and when he removed the bandage, the child's skin came off with it.

He later told police he twice left the girl alone in the apartment while going to two different stores for medical supplies.

The girl was taken to Laurel Regional Hospital hours after she was burned. She was later transferred to Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

Court documents show that, according to a doctor's notes concerning features of the child's burns, "These features often suggest an intentional burn and likely raise concern for abuse by burning."

In opening statements, prosecutors told the jury that the girl suffered injuries to 20 percent of her body, including her feet, the back of her legs and buttocks.

They asked that if it truly was an accident, why didn't the uncle call 911, his wife or the child's mother and questioned why he waited so long to get the girl medical treatment. Also, they wanted to know why his story keeps changing.

The defense claimed the burning wasn't intentional and that the apartment complex allowed the water temperature to come out of the faucet at 164 degrees.

The girl underwent several surgeries and is expected to get more.

The trial is expected to last four days.

Man gets 20 years for child abuse

Police, prosecutors say he burned his baby with hot water
By LISA BEISEL, Staff Writer
Published 11/13/09

A Glen Burnie man was sentenced yesterday to 20 years in prison for assaulting his 5-month-old son last year.

Andre Nathaniel Robinson, 31, looked around in disbelief after the sentence was read and yelled for his wife to tell the judge that he had not hurt their son on purpose.

"She's a liar!" he shouted repeatedly while his family members wept in the Annapolis courtroom.

Circuit Court Judge Paul A. Hackner didn't comment on the case; he simply read the sentence of 25 years with all but 20 years suspended. After Robinson is released, he'll be on probation for five years. He also was ordered not to have contact with his wife or son.

Police and prosecutors said the baby was brought to Baltimore Washington Medical Center with burns on his face, the right side of his chest and his right arm. Robinson told hospital officials he put the baby in the bathtub in his home on Klagg Court in Glen Burnie with the water running, then flushed the toilet, which made the water heat up quickly.

He initially didn't take the baby to the hospital, instead trying to treat him on his own. By the time the family brought the baby to the hospital he was near death, charging documents state.

Robinson entered an Alford plea to the crime last month. An Alford plea allows a defendant to maintain his innocence while admitting that prosecutors have enough evidence to convict him. It carries all the consequences of a guilty plea.

Though Assistant Public Defender Ginina Stevenson reiterated that Robinson hurt his son by accident, Assistant State's Attorney Pamela Alban said the state's evidence would show that the water had been heated up.

Evidence would also show that water from the tap in the house - even after the toilet was flushed - could not reach the 150 degrees that doctors believe was the temperature of the water that injured the baby, Alban said.

Additionally, the burn marks were inconsistent with Robinson's version of events, according to police.

Alban said during the sentencing hearing that it was not the first time Robinson had used extremely hot water as a weapon. In April, he was accused of throwing scalding water on his wife twice in one day after they had an argument.

She did not get treatment at the time, but months later doctors could still see the scars, which were consistent with water burns, charging documents state.

The burn marks on their son were "etched burns" caused by water that was hotter than 150 degrees, Alban said. The burns caused the infant "extreme pain" and injuries for which he has already had several surgeries. He will require more surgeries as he grows.

"His skin can't grow with him," Alban said. "He will be scarred for the rest of his life."

Stevenson said her client was remorseful about what happened and was often in tears when they met to discuss his case.

"My client has maintained from the beginning, your honor, that he loved his son, he wouldn't do anything to hurt him," Stevenson said.

Shirley Robinson, the defendant's mother, backed up Stevenson's statement.

"I know Andre has made mistakes in his life, but as far as his son, he loves him with all his heart," she said in a statement to the court. "Andre didn't mean any harm. :( That's his blood."

Stevenson explained that he was giving his son water from the tap when the incident happened. He had just flushed the toilet and he realized too late that the water was too hot, he said.

His wife was in the other room at the time, but the door was open, he said in court.

"She knows I didn't do this intentionally," he said.

He did admit to using bad judgment in not taking the boy to the hospital immediately. Instead, Robinson said he used cocoa butter and Neosporin to try to treat the burn himself. When he realized the extent of the injury he called his mother, who took them to the hospital, he said.

He also admitted to the water-throwing incident in April with his wife. They were having an argument while he was heating water in the microwave, and he threw it on her, he said.

"I was very upset," he said.

Four Fires In Escambia In Two Days; One Leads To Child Abuse Arrest
December 5, 2009
Escambia County has had four residential fires in just two days, replacing four green bulbs with four red bulbs in the “Keep the Wreath Green” holiday safety campaign. One of the Friday fires resulted in a Pensacola woman being arrested for aggravated child abuse.

At 9:10 Friday morning, a fire was reported in the 700 block of Truman Avenue at Oakwood Terrace Apartments. When Ladder 12 from the Osceola Fire Station arrived on scene, they found smoke coming from an apartment on the second floor of the complex. At 9:25 a.m. the fire was reported out, with major damage to one bedroom in just one apartment and smoke damage to the rest of that unit.

A six month old child suffered minor burns after being left alone in the apartment. Officials with the fire department told Escambia County Sheriff’s deputies that power had been disconnected to the apartment on Thursday. According to the officials, several candles were used to illuminate a back bedroom when one fell from a windowsill onto the bed starting the fire. A six month old infant was lying on the bed and suffered burns to her scalp before being removed from the bed by an unidentified relative.

The infants mother, identified as Caroline Bramlet, 21, told firefighters that she had left the infant there while she was outside speaking to neighbors, according to Chris Welborn, spokesperson for the sheriff’s department.

The infant was transported to a local hospital by ambulance and treated for her injuries. Firefighters also located drug paraphernalia in the apartment and turned that evidence over to deputies. The Florida Department of Children and Families was contacted and took custody of the infant.

Bramlet was then arrested for aggravated child abuse and possession of drug paraphernalia. Upon taking her into custody deputies found marijuana on her person which resulted in the additional charge of possession of marijuana, less than 20 grams, Welborn said. Early Saturday morning, Bramlet remained in the jail on $2,000 bond.

An infant in the apartment received minor injuries and was transported by Escambia County Emergency Medical Services to Sacred Heart Hospital.

Death of burned 7-week-old ruled homicide
Last Update: 12/16 11:09 am

PORT ARTHUR, Texas (AP) — Port Arthur police say the death of a 7-week-old boy has been ruled a homicide after the infant's skin showed severe burns.

Justice of the Peace Tom Gillam says an autopsy was scheduled Wednesday on Jashawn Keller. Gillam says the baby had been near a humidifier and portions of the child's skin peeled.

Gillam says investigators are trying to determine where the baby was in a bedroom at the time the victim suffered steam burns.

Emergency personnel Tuesday night received a call about an unresponsive infant. Gillam says by the time he arrived the baby was already in an ambulance, where the JP pronounced the child dead.

Gillam told KFDM-TV that a humidifier had been placed in a car seat set up in the infant's room.

Man gets 12 years in baby daughter’s scalding
By Joe Macenka

Verdre T. Turner Jr., 20

A 20-year-old Richmond man will spend 12 years in prison for putting his infant daughter in a tub of scalding water and pinning her there, leaving her with numerous second-degree burns.

"There's no way to describe her wounds other than horrific," Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Julie E. McConnell said yesterday after Verdre T. Turner Jr. was convicted on charges of malicious wounding and child abuse.

Turner was to have been tried today in Richmond Circuit Court on charges of aggravated malicious wounding and child abuse. If convicted, he could have faced life in prison.

Instead, he went before Judge Margaret P. Spencer yesterday and entered an Alford plea to a charge of malicious wounding and a guilty plea to a count of child abuse.

Spencer accepted the pleas, found him guilty on both charges and sentenced him to 20 years -- with 14 suspended -- for the wounding charge and 10 years -- with four suspended -- for child abuse.

An Alford plea means the defendant acknowledges there is enough evidence to convict him, but he does not admit guilt.

"Twelve years of active prison time in a child-abuse case is pretty significant. We're pretty pleased with this outcome," said McConnell, who prosecuted the case with Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney J. Andrew Johnson.

McConnell said that at the time of the scalding, on Feb. 12 last year, Turner was under a court order to stay away from his daughter and her mother because of a previous child-abuse charge involving a different child.

Instead, the mother went to work and left her daughter at her South Richmond apartment in the care of Turner, who apparently became angry with the 5½-month-old girl.

"We don't really know what the motive was," McConnell said. "We assume this was a punishment for something this baby had done -- possibly a bathroom issue."

McConnell said tests that police conducted at the apartment after Turner's arrest determined that the water temperature was capable of reaching 145 degrees.

Turner called the girl's mother about eight hours after she had left for work and said he had given the girl a bath and that her skin was peeling.

"He made it sound like she had dry skin or something," McConnell said.

Instead, when the mother got home, she discovered the infant had numerous areas on the lower two-thirds of her body where layers of skin had been burned away.

A horizontal straight-line burn part of the way up her stomach indicated the girl had been held in place while in the scalding water, McConnell said.

"It's absolutely horrendous," she said.

After lengthy hospitalization, the girl has numerous permanent scars as a result of the scalding and may need surgery at some stage in the future, McConnell said.

"She's a happy little girl considering all she's been through," she said.

Burned 2-year-old girl dies; Cleveland police investigating
By Rachel Dissell, The Plain Dealer

A relative of the 2-year-old girl who was found dead Wednesday evening is hleped away from the house on Longwood Avenue in Cleveland.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland police are investigating the death of a 2-year-old girl Wednesday evening.

Alexandria Hamilton was unresponsive when paramedics arrived at a Longwood Avenue home about 6:20 p.m. She had multiple burns on her body, according to Cuyahoga County coroner's office spokesman Powell Caesar.

Caesar said an autopsy will be done Thursday to determine what caused the toddler's death.

Her mother, Tyesha M. Hamilton, 29, was taken into police custody. The body of her daughter was moved from an ambulance to a coroner's van shortly after 8 p.m. as dozens of neighborhood children watched from second- and third-story windows at the federally subsidized housing complex near East 36th Street.

The toddler, her mother and several siblings had been staying with a friend in the complex -- where neighbors say the family used to live -- for a few days.

Before that, law-enforcement sources said they were staying at an Econo Lodge on Northfield Road in Warrensville Heights.

Several neighbors, including Kayla Jolly, 13, said she was told the toddler was scalded in a bathtub at the hotel several days ago -- though it was unclear how the child ended up in the tub.

Hamilton's relatives sobbed across the street. One woman made her way over to the police car where Tyesha Hamilton sat yelling: "Tell her that I love her. Did you tell her that I love her?"

It was unclear whether she was talking about the mother or her child. Cuyahoga County Children and Family Services Director Deborah Forkas said agency workers were on scene and trying to determine if three other children could be safely placed with relatives or needed to be taken into custody.

"We are still trying to gather facts about what happened," Forkas said.

She said she did not know whether the family had previous contact with her agency or not.

Hamilton had two convictions in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas court in 1999 for a marijuana possession charge and in 2001 for receiving stolen property. She was put on probation in that case and was ordered to take random urine tests. She violated her probation and was sent to prison for six months.

Investigation Continues In Turdler's Death

POSTED: 5:13 pm EST February 18, 2010
UPDATED: 11:07 pm EST February 18, 2010

WARRENSVILLE HEIGHTS, Ohio -- There is more information about the death of a Cleveland toddler.

22602952_240X176.jpg

Two-year-old Alexandria Hamilton was found dead Wednesday night at the Cleveland apartment. The toddler’s mom, Tyesha, was arrested at the scene, but has not been charged.

The coroner needs to run more tests to figure out exactly how the baby died, but doctors suspect it did not happen in Cleveland. Investigators are going to start with the mother’s last known address in Warrensville Heights.

Police will now have to figure out what apparently happened at the Econo Lodge in Warrensville Heights that ultimately resulted in the death of the 2-year-old. Thursday morning, the motel’s lobby attendant received a call from police to seal a room.

Detectives looked for evidence while an officer guarded the last known address of 29-year-old Tyesha Hamilton and her children. Police said after the incident at the motel, Hamilton drove the 2-year-old to a friend’s house on Longwood Avenue in Cleveland.

"My daughter called me and told me that her heart stopped beating,” the victim’s grandmother Hope Burpo said. "When I called her back she got to screaming and hollering and I knew something was wrong."

When EMS arrived on the scene, niglet Alex was unresponsive but still inderdone.

"When we pulled up here, I saw that yellow tape and I knew my grandbaby wasn’t alive," Burpo said.

Police said the child showed signs of abuse, including multiple burns all over her body.

Tyesha Hamilton is being held in the city jail while police investigate her for possible aggravated murder charges.

Cleveland: Bond set at $1M for mammy in 2-year-old niglet's death

CLEVELAND -- A Cleveland woman arrested in the scalding death of her 2-year-old niglet has been ordered held on $1 million bond.

Tyesha Hamilton made an initial court appearance on Monday in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court. She did not enter a plea and no court date has been set.

The county coroner's office says Alexandria Hamilton died last week of thermal injuries, which are caused by water or steam and are consistent with scalding.

The toddler was found unresponsive by paramedics at an apartment with her mother.

County officials say Tyesha Hamilton, who has three other children, lost custody of them in 2007 because she neglected them while struggling with drug addiction.

A telephone listing could not be found for her attorney, Lawrence Floyd.

Nacogdoches father arrested in alleged child abuse case

It Beez Ah Hacksident An' Sheeeit! He Di'int Mean To Scald Lil' Za'Taurean!

NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) – An Nacogdoches family is en route to a Dallas hospital, where their two-year-old child is recovering from an apparent scalding.

The child's father, 20-year old Anthony Watts is charged with burning the child, but his family says it was just a horrible accident.

"I said Anthony what happened? Did he cry?" said Maria Session, Watts' sister.

Saturday night, police responded to Anthony Watts' call, that his two-year-old son, Za'Taurean Pleasant's skin was peeling off.

"When Anthony got him out of the bathtub and dried him, Anthony said his skin was peeling real bad," said Session.

Down the hall, Watts' mom showed us the family bathroom. Feeling the water at its hottest temperature trying to make sense how bath water scalded half of her grandson's body.

"I don't believe he did it intentionally," said Carolyn James, Watts' mother. "Aint nobody in the world that could make me believe he did it intentionally."

"Now accidents do happen," said Session. "We don't know what happened. Nobody was at the house."

The people that know Watts say he would never hurt his son. "Anthony's a sweet, loving person," said Dianne Curl, a family friend. "I would let Anthony keep my baby anytime, day or night, whenever he wanted."

For his sister, the hardest part is not knowing exactly what happened to her nephew behind these doors.

"I've been up all night thinking about this, trying to piece it together," said Session.

For now, their main concern is little "Duece".

"Any accident that happens to a child it scars them. He's going to have to live with this for the rest of his life," said James.

Watts bonded out Sunday night, but police say he's not allowed to see his son. Injury to a child is a second degree felony.

A second person faces charges in connection with the case of a 2-year-old child who was placed in a bathtub of hot water.

The child’s mother, Lachandra Cassey, was arrested on Tuesday on a charge of accessory of the fact of cruelty to a juvenile, according to police. Investigators say Cassey lied about what happen to her child.

The toddler was burned on her vagina, buttocks, right hand, right arm and ribcage area by hot water.

Her grandmother, 60-year-old Lena Moore, was arrested last week after the child was taken to LSU Hospital in Shreveport with second and third-degree burns.

Investigators determined the child had been placed in a tub of hot water.
