The mother of a 10-year-old Harlem boy who was bludgeoned to death in the family’s Harlem apartment was investigated for neglect when her son was a baby, police said Monday.

Police said the woman’s boyfriend, Ryan Cato, 34 — who is awaiting arraignment on murder charges in the boy’s death — was also investigated by the city Administration for Children’s Services for allegedly beating another woman in front of their children, NYPD Chief of Department Rodney Harrison said.

“Mr. Cato has three prior arrests,” Harrison said at an afternoon press conference. “He was last arrested in December in Brooklyn, where he assaulted the mother of his children in their presence. An ACS case was opened for that case.”

The chief said the boy’s mother, whose name is being withheld by The Post because she has not been charged, was investigated by ACS in 2010 after her tragic son was born.

The outcome of the two probes is not immediately known.

The dead boy, identified by sources as Ayden Wolfe, was found unconscious and unresponsive in the living room of the apartment at the Saint Nicholas Houses on Saturday.

Ayden was rushed to Harlem Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

“The victim was found with extensive bruising to his face, his extremities and all over the body,” Harrison said. “Some injuries were old, but others were recent.”

“At the hospital, investigators were informed that the victim’s demise was caused by fatal child abuse syndrome,” he said.

Harrison said his mother has not yet been interviewed.

Cato was charged on Sunday with murder and endangering the welfare of a child.

Tensions run high as mourners gather at funeral for 10-year-old boy bludgeoned to death

Mourners bid an emotional farewell to little Ayden Wolfe at a funeral Tuesday for the 10-year-old Harlem boy who was allegedly bludgeoned to death by his mother’s boyfriend.

Family and friends gathered at Mount Herman Baptist Church in the Bronx to say their final goodbyes — some wearing customized hoodies with Ayden’s name and the number 10.

Tensions ran high at the small service, with some mourners not able to join the packed church.

“I prayed for her!” a woman in one of the custom shirts yelled as she was escorted out of the house of worship. “I was there.”

Gospel songs could be heard coming through the church doors while a man attempted to calm the woman down, urging her, “Not here, not now.”

“Everybody relax,” the pastor, Joseph Jones, encouraged those gathered outside. “We’re not going to end on this note.”

Pallbearers, including the boy’s father, Darnell Wolfe, then carried out his tiny blue casket, emblazoned with the initials “AWD,” and placed it in a waiting hearse.

“I just buried my son. I have no words at the moment,” the distraught dad told The Post shortly after the service.

As people exited the church, a separate argument erupted between two groups of mourners in the parking lot, though it was unclear what the squabble was about.

The service came 10 days after Ayden was found naked and unconscious in the bathtub of his apartment at the St. Nicholas Houses on West 131st Street.

His body was covered from head to toe in bruises and cuts, both old and new. He also had multiple broken ribs and had been beaten so severely that deep cuts were found on his spleen, liver, kidney and renal vein, according to court papers.

The cause of death was battered child syndrome, a clinical condition in young children who have suffered serious physical abuse, usually at the hands of a caregiver.

Pastor Jones, of the church where the funeral was held, said the boy’s death should be a wake-up call to the community to be “more vigilant.”

“None of us can say that that’s not my child. It’s always all of our children,” Jones said.

“We have to watch each other, look out for each other, pay attention to each other, especially our children, they don’t understand all that’s going on. So we have to watch for them,” the pastor added.

Mourner Jason Watson, who said his daughter was best friends with Ayden, shared fond memories of the boy.

“Ayden was a beautiful person,” Watson said.

“Like if you got a chance to be around that kid, you’ll know that every moment of being around them, it was the same experience.

“He sold you love, kindness, joy, excitement. He brought out the best in everybody. He was a positive kid, a positive role model to all kids.”

Watson’s daughter is “sad and hurt” over Ayden’s death, he said.

“I can’t even bring her to the funeral today because it would traumatize her to bring her here,” he said.

Ayden’s mother was also best friends with Watson’s wife, he said.

“His mother was a good mother,” Watson added.

“[I don’t know] know the full details of it, but all I know that mother was a good mother to that kid.”

In a Facebook post before the funeral, Ayden’s dad thanked family and friends for their support and prayers amid the tragedy.

“This life will be celebrated for a long time and many things will come of this loss,” Darnell Wolfe wrote. “Because [Ayden] will forever sit in the hearts of the lives that he touched.”

Police Reveal More Details In Death Of 10-Year-Old Ayden Wolfe; Mother’s Boyfriend Ryan Cato Faces Murder Charges

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — There are new details about a man police say killed a 10-year-old boy in Harlem over the weekend.
Some experts are worried that the coronavirus pandemic is making it harder for victims of child abuse to get help, CBS2’s Nick Caloway reported Monday.

attachment.php

The boyfriend of Ayden’s mother has been charged with killing the boy. Ryan Cato, 34, is charged with murder and endangering the welfare of a child.
He has three prior arrests, the most recent a domestic violence incident involving a different woman this past December.

Ayden’s body was discovered in the family’s apartment, bloodied and bruised. He had rib fractures and multiple internal injuries.
“At the hospital, investigators were informed that the victim’s demise was caused by fatal child abuse syndrome,” NYPD Acting Chief of Department Rodney Harrison said, adding some of the injuries were new and some were old.
“And when you see and hear about bruises in different stages of healing, it means the abuse was prolonged and ongoing,” said Dr. Mary Pulido of the New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.
Pulido added prolonged abuse like that would normally be noticed and reported by a teacher or doctor. However, the pandemic has meant less face-to-face interaction with those who might help.
“We’re in remote world now with the pandemic. If he was remote learning, it’s very difficult for teachers to spot bruising, necessarily, if he was online,” Pulido said.
Sources told CBS2 police are still working to determine if the mother knew of the abuse.
So far, she has not been charged with a crime.

A 1-month-old girl died after she was found unconscious in her Bronx apartment, suffering a skull fracture, cops said.

Responding cops found Hanniel Darkwah unconscious and unresponsive inside the apartment on Gerard Avenue near East 165th Street in Concourse after her mother called 911 around 3 p.m. Wednesday, authorities said.

EMS rushed her to BronxCare Health System, where she was pronounced dead.

Authorities initially reported that there were no obvious signs of trauma, but later confirmed that the baby had suffered a skull fracture.

Hanniel’s mother, 35, is being interviewed by investigators, cops said.

No arrests have been made, and the circumstances of the child’s death were not immediately clear.

A man arrested for allegedly beating his girlfriend’s 7-year-old son to death with a hammer in West Virginia told authorities he “just lost it,” according to police.

Rashad Akeem Thompson
, 34, allegedly carried out the deadly assault around 2:45 a.m. Thursday inside an apartment complex in the city of Beckley, authorities said.

When cops arrived, they found a hammer covered in what appeared to be blood on the living room floor, WSAZ reported.

They discovered the young boy’s body lying on the couch with extreme trauma to the left side of his head.

“I just lost it,” Thompson allegedly told police, according to the local report.

The criminal complaint states detectives believe he was bludgeoned with the hammer.

The boy’s 24-year-old mother, identified by the outlet as Felicia Brown, was found at a neighbor’s house bleeding heavily from apparent stab wounds to her face, cops said.

She was hospitalized in critical condition.

A broken knife was also recovered inside the home, the outlet reported.

Thompson was arrested at the scene and charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, child abuse resulting in death, malicious wounding and two counts of domestic battery, authorities said.

He is being held at the Southern Regional Jail pending his arraignment.

7-year-old found dead in the Bronx was caught in years-long custody battle
By Georgett Roberts, Tamar Lapin and Larry Celona
August 12, 2021 1:12pm Updated

She was in the fight for her life.

The grandmother of the 7-year-old girl found dead in her Bronx apartment tirelessly fought for years to keep custody of the child — whose tragic death was ruled a homicide on Thursday.

But little Julissia Batties was eventually returned to her mom — not long before her lifeless, broken body, with evidence of trauma all over, was discovered Tuesday morning in NYCHA’s Mitchel Houses.

“I begged them not to give Julissia back to her mother because when she got mad at my son, she’d take it out on my granddaughter,” Yolanda Davis, the girl’s paternal grandmother, told The Post Thursday.

“If she was with me, we’d never be here without her. She’d still be alive.”

Davis said the city Medical Examiner’s Office called her Thursday with the homicide ruling — and added that Julissia was found with severe abdominal injuries. Law enforcement sources confirmed her death was ruled a homicide.

Not long after she was born in April 2014, Julissia was removed from her mom Navasia Jones’ care, though a family court judge then granted the mom custody, court records show.

The Administration for Children’s Services appealed the decision, arguing Julissia was in “imminent danger of becoming impaired” due to failure by her parents to “exercise a minimum degree of care,” according to the records.

State appellate court judges in 2015 ruled in favor of ACS, finding that though the mom had completed parenting and anger management programs, she “was still prone to unpredictable emotional outbursts” and “was easily provoked and agitated.”

The mom also had four older children removed from her custody a year before Julissia was born, the court documents papers.

The court said that until the mom was able to “successfully address and acknowledge the circumstances” that led to her other children being taken away, “we cannot agree” that returning Julissia, “even with the safeguards imposed by the family court, would not present an imminent risk to [her] life or health.”

Davis said she raised Julissia for most of the girl’s short life until March 2019, when the child went to visit her mom for the weekend — and never came back.

ACS decided to return Julissia to her mom permanently, the grandmother said. Sources told The Post on Wednesday that her mom was granted custody in June, though the circumstances around that decision aren’t clear.

Davis, of Brooklyn, whose son is Julissia’s father, said she “begged” ACS not to take her granddaughter away from her.

“They should have listened to me,” the distraught woman said. “She was better off with me.”

Police had been called to the home at least six times between May 2018 and March 2020 for suspected abuse of the girl, sources said.

The mother, who suffers from bipolar disorder, has eight previous arrests, including two for menacing, sources said. The other six are sealed.

Jones couldn’t be reached for comment Thursday. A lawyer who represented her in family court cases declined to comment.

After the girl’s body was found Tuesday, her 35-year-old mom told cops the girl fell and hit her head on a desk, according to sources.

The child’s 17-year-old brother later admitted during questioning that he had punched his sister eight times in the face when their mother went to the store around 5 a.m. — though the blows were not what ultimately killed her, sources said.

Hours later, the girl started throwing up and passed out, prompting her mom to call 911. Julissia was rushed to Lincoln Hospital but could not be saved.

No criminal charges have been filed and no one is in custody.

“She was a beautiful kid. She was a good kid,” Davis said of her late granddaughter. “She didn’t deserve that.”

Baby in grave condition after father hits head on car seat handle
By Tina Moore

A 1-month-old boy was left in serious condition Sunday after his father smashed his head off a car seat handle in the Bronx, cops said Sunday.

Leroy Peters allegedly picked the child up so forcefully, he struck the infant’s head “on the bar above the car seat” in the family’s apartment at 285 East 171st Street on Friday morning, police said.

The baby’s mom noticed he was slumped in the car seat when Peters came to pick her up from an overnight security shift a short time later, police sources said. She tried to splash water on the child’s face but called 911 when he was unresponsive.

Peters was arrested Friday night and charged with reckless assault to a child and acting in a manner injurious to a child under 17, cops said.

Doctors at Mount Sinai Hospital told cops the baby suffered a brain hemorrhage, subdural hematomas and skull fractures, according to police sources.

The child was in “grave condition” and “likely to die,” a police spokesman said, adding that the charges would be upgraded if the baby did not make it.

Abused girl found dead in NYC apartment still in morgue a month later

She still can’t rest in peace.
More than a month after little Julissia Batties was found dead in her mother’s Bronx apartment, her body is still sitting in the city morgue as her parents argue over funeral arrangements, The Post has learned.
The abused 7-year-old girl was the subject of a heated custody battle for nearly all of her life and the fight is continuing even after her tragic death — with her mom wanting to have her cremated and her dad hoping she can be buried, according to court papers.
Mom Navasia Jones, who had custody of Julissia when the girl died, filed a petition on Friday asking a judge to grant her control over funeral arrangements and the “disposition” of the girl’s body.
Jones wants to have her daughter cremated so she “will always have something to remember [Julissia] by,” the filing in Bronx Supreme Court states.

But dad Julius Batties — whose mother Yolanda Davis tried in vain for years to gain custody of her granddaughter — wants Julissia to be buried in the same New Jersey cemetery as his father.

“I’m ready to lay my baby to rest so she can be at peace,” Batties told The Post on Tuesday.
Davis agreed, “I just want to put her to rest.”
“I never knew we would have to fight for her body,” the distraught grandmother said. “I thought we’d bury the baby and that’s it.”
Julissia’s lifeless body, with evidence of trauma all over, was discovered Aug. 10 in Jones’ apartment at NYCHA’s Mitchel Houses. Autopsy results showed the girl died of “blunt force abdominal trauma,” and the NYPD has ruled the case a homicide.
Both Julissia’s mother and her 17-year-old half-brother were questioned by detectives, law-enforcement sources said. But no arrests have been made as the investigation continues.
There was a known history of violence in the child’s home, and an alleged admission from the half-brother that he punched Julissia eight times in the face the day she died — though it was later determined those blows were not what ultimately killed her, sources have said.
The alleged assault happened while their mom took a 5 a.m. trip to the store, and hours later, Julissia, who was due to begin second-grade this month, began throwing up, prompting Jones to call 911. Jones claimed her daughter had fallen and hit her head on a desk, according to the sources. The girl was brought to Lincoln Hospital but could not be saved.

In the weeks since Julissia’s death, Jones, 35, and Batties, 37, each made arrangements with separate funeral homes in regards to their daughter’s final resting place, according to the court documents.
Because of that, the city’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said that it could not release Julissia’s body until the parents either came to an agreement or let the court decide. On Aug. 26, OCME said it had placed a “hold” on Julissia’s body until a resolution is reached, the filing states.

But the parents couldn’t come to an agreement, with Batties saying he “would never agree” to have his daughter cremated.
The dad said he had already picked out a casket in one of his little girl’s favorite color — pink — and arranged for a horse-drawn carriage at the funeral, to make sure she “goes out like a princess.”
“Because she was a princess,” he said.

Julissia’s grandmother, however, wants to bury Julissia in a white dress the girl had picked out to attend a wedding. She also wants to put her in a purple headband, since that color was also one of her granddaughter’s favorites.
“I’ve never experienced this in my life and it’s really frustrating because here she is, a baby, she is gone, she is still sitting in a morgue, you know,” Davis said.

“It’s over a month now. Can we just put her to rest?”
Jones’ attorney didn’t return requests for comment Tuesday.
A spokesperson for OCME said that disputes among claimants must be decided by a court, according to the state’s public health laws. “Consistent with the law, OCME continues to hold the remains of the decedent while the Court decides the issue.”

Death of 4-year-old Brooklyn boy ruled homicide, stepdad charged

The death of a 4-year-old boy in his Brooklyn home over the weekend has been ruled a homicide — and his stepdad has been charged with his murder, authorities said.
Little Jaycee Eubanks died of battered child syndrome with recent blunt trauma to the torso, the city Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed.
The child’s mother was holding Jaycee when she waved down police in front of her home on Baltic Street in Gowanus around 5 a.m., Sunday, police said.
Officers attempted CPR on the child, who was rushed to Brooklyn Hospital.
He was pronounced dead a short time later, according to police.
Around the same time, someone called 911 stating that a man was attempting to kill himself at the address, authorities said. Police who responded found that it was the stepfather — identified Wednesday as Jerimiah Johnson, 27 — who was taken into custody, cops said.
Cops confirmed Wednesday morning that Johnson was charged with murder and acting in a manner injurious to a child.
According to investigators, police were initially called to the house because a man, who later turned out to be the stepfather, was attempting to kill himself. He was being held at NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn as an emotionally disturbed person, authorities said.
A source with knowledge of the case told the Post Tuesday that the NYPD was alerted to possible abuse of the boy just weeks before he died — but botched the case by not doing a thorough enough investigation.

Workers from the non-profit Safe Horizons interviewed Jaycee and his 6-year-old brother with Special Victims Division officers present — but the cops wrote off the complaint without following protocols that would have spurred a follow-up with the family, the source said.
An NYPD spokesperson said the cops did make a referral for a medical exam, but did not know if one was actually done.
A spokeswoman for New York City Administration for Children’s Services declined to comment on the specifics of the case.
“Our top priority is protecting the safety and wellbeing of all children in New York City. We are investigating this case with NYPD and we have taken action to secure the safety of the other child in the home,” the spokeswoman said.
A day after Jaycee’s death, another 4-year-old boy, Aisyn Gonzalez, was discovered unconscious and unresponsive when authorities responded to his family’s apartment on South 5th Street near Berry Street in Williamsburg around 10:15 a.m. Saturday, cops said.

Cops confirmed Wednesday morning that Gonzalez suffered trauma to his torso and was killed. No one was immediately arrested.

The abused 7-year-old girl killed in her Bronx home over the summer will finally be laid to rest — now that her squabbling parents have settled their court battle over her remains, according to court papers filed Wednesday.
Julius Batties, the father of little Julissia Batties, won the right to claim the remains of his “princess” from the city morgue, where she has been kept since her tragic death inside her mom’s apartment in NYCHA’s Mitchel Houses on Aug. 10.
Mom Navasia Jones, 35, had filed a petition in Bronx Supreme Court in September asking a judge to grant her control over funeral arrangements, saying she wanted to cremate her daughter so she “will always have something to remember [her] by.”

But the distraught dad, 37, said that he wanted Julissia buried, telling The Post last month that he would “never agree” to have her cremated.
In court papers, Batties also argued that it was unseemly for Jones to be granted control over their daughter’s final resting place — given that the girl was in her care when she died.
“Even if she did not inflict the final blow she did not protect her when she could have,” Batties wrote in an affidavit filed earlier this month and obtained by The Post.
His attorney also claimed in a filing that Jones “is one of two suspects directly or indirectly responsible for her being killed.”
Nether Batties’ or Jones’ attorneys returned multiple requests for comment. No criminal charges have been filed against Jones — or anyone else in the case which remains under investigation.
Julissia’s body had evidence of trauma all over when she was discovered inside the apartment, and the death has been ruled a homicide from “blunt force abdominal trauma.”
Both the girl’s mother and her 17-year-old half-brother were questioned by detectives, law-enforcement sources said.
There was a known history of violence in the child’s home, and an alleged admission from the half-brother that he punched Julissia eight times in the face the day she died — though it was later determined those blows were not what ultimately killed her, sources have said.

Batties wrote in his affidavit that “it is my understanding that at some point there will be an arrest, and that will help at least provide me some closure as to who is responsible for her death.”
The agreement that he and Julissia’s mom came to, which was signed by a judge late last week, allows him to bury his daughter, while giving Jones a separate viewing time at a funeral home in Brooklyn.
Prior to her tragic death and the ensuing fight over her remains, Julissia had been the subject of a heated custody battle, with her paternal grandmother Yolanda Davis fighting in vain for years for the right to care for her.

“We need to bury my granddaughter,” Davis told The Post on Wednesday. “I don’t want her in the morgue any longer.”
Davis said her granddaughter should be laid to rest within the next two weeks, and that she was making prayer cards for the funeral. She wants to bury Julissia in a white dress the girl had picked out to attend a wedding.
“Let her little soul rest in peace now,” she said.

A 4-month-old boy was found dead in his Brooklyn foster home this week from suspected malnutrition and internal trauma he suffered before his foster mom gained custody, according to cops and police sources.
Cops found little Cairo Stenson unconscious and unresponsive inside the Van Dyke Houses apartment on Dumont Avenue near Powell Street in Brownsville when they responded to a 911 call around 9 a.m. Wednesday, authorities said.
He was rushed to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, cops said.
Stenson’s foster mother had only had custody of him for about a month, police sources said.
Investigators believe he may have suffered malnourishment and internal trauma before the foster mom took custody of him, according to the sources.
