Two men in custody in Knoxville double murder investigation

KNOXVILLE (WATE) -- Two men police call "persons of interest" were taken into custody Thursday as the investigation continues into the murders of a UT student and her boyfriend.

Officers caught Lemaricus Davidson, 25, in Knoxville late Thursday afternoon on Reynolds Street.

A few hours earlier, officers from several law enforcement agencies helped take his brother, Letalvis Cobbins, 24, into custody in Lebanon, Ky. without incident. He was found just after noon inside a house.


Cobbins is being held in federal custody. Local investigators are in Kentucky questioning him.

No charges have been filed against either man and police have not yet named the two as suspects.

A third man, George Thomas, who was with Cobbins in Kentucky is being detained for questioning. According to Knoxville police, he is not related to the brothers.

Police are questioning Cobbins and Davidson about the murders of Channon Christian, 21, and Christopher Newsom, 23.

According to the U.S. Marshals Office in Kentucky, two or three suspects carjacked Christian and Newsom the night they disappeared.

Newsom was killed while Christian was held hostage for a number of days before she was killed. (And I wonder what kind of brutalities were inflicted upon this beautiful WHITE girl over the course of those days by these "Nigs of Interest...)

Her body was found in a rental house Tuesday on the 2300 block of Chipman Street in East Knoxville. Newsom was found Sunday afternoon along the railroad tracks near 9th Ave.

U.S. Marshals say they have combined efforts with the Knoxville Police Department, Knox County Sheriff's Office and the ATF due to concern the carjacking suspects would commit a similar crime in another state.

There is an outstanding warrant on Davidson in Knox County for failure to appear. It dates back to November 2006. (SURPRISE!)

Davidson is wanted in Knoxville on driving with a suspended license. His criminal history dates back to 2000. He was also charged with carjacking and aggravated robbery in Jackson, Tenn. several years ago. (ANOTHER SURPRISE!)

Neighbors say Lemaricus Davidson lived at the Chipman Street house with a woman and two children. They were seen leaving recently with suitcases.

Police Search for Brothers in Double Murder Case

Knoxville (WVLT) - A day after the discovery of a second body in a double murder case, people in that neighborhood raise questions about safety, while police ask for your help finding two men of interest in the case.

Information is the key. Police are now looking for these two individuals who they believe might have important information about the double murder in East Knoxville.

25-year-old, Lemaricus Davidson, and his brother 24-year-old Letalvis Cobbins.

Davidson is described as about 6 foot 4 inches, 195 pounds.

Cobbins is about 6 feet tall, weighing about 150 pounds, he has no record in Knox County, however according to the Tennessee Department of Corrections, Davidson has charges filed in Madison County Tennessee for carjacking and aggravated robbery.

Davidson also has an outstanding warrant for failure to appear on a "driving with a suspended license" charge.

Davidson's last known address was 2316 Chipman Street. That's the home where police found 21-year-old Channon Christian's body Wednesday, just a short distance away from where her boyfriend 23-year-old Christopher Newsom's body was found just days before.

"I think as a parent, with everything that's going on, I'm not sure that I could even keep an eye on three children. I only have two eyes," says East Knoxville resident April Wilson.

Three kids, two eyes, and one new rule: no more playing outside.

"I think it's just a dangerous time right now and that if anyone was driving by and they were out, they could easily take them," Wilson says.

After the news of two people murdered in her neighborhood, April Wilson says she's scared and she's leaving. "We've been here about four months and we are in the process of looking for a place to move."

Meanwhile, police want you to be on the lookout for these two individuals, 25-year-old, Lemaricus Davidson, and his brother 24-year-old Letalvis Cobbins. Authorities believe they have information that's critical to solving this double homicide.

"Right now, we know they have been living in this area. There is a possibility that they could be armed and dangerous, that is why it is critical that we get in contact with them as soon as possible," Darrell DeBusk from the Knoxville Police Department.

We asked neighbors if they recognized the men in the photos.

"I don't know him, but I do know him," says Brittany Hunley, who lives next door to the house where Channon Christian was found. "Him and his girlfriend lived here with their two children. I really don't know much about them. They come in and out, people come in and out of their house and stuff."

"I've seen kids up there, yeah," says Danny Williams, who lives down the street. And today, several people have been driving up and down the street.

"It's been pretty crowded today," Williams says.

Neighbors say it's probably out of curiosity, and April Wilson is one of them.

"When parents or even people who aren't parents, don't have the information, it sparks frustration and it sparks fear that maybe we wouldn't have if we had a little more information," she says.

At this time, police are releasing a limited amount of information. They don't want to hinder the investigation.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- A fourth person was arrested Friday in connection with the killing of a young man, whose burned corpse was found dumped along railroad tracks, and the death of his date, who was kept alive for days and raped, authorities said.

All four suspects were being held on federal charges, Knoxville police spokesman Darrell DeBusk said. Two were arrested in Knoxville and the other two in Lebanon, Ky.

The victims, Christopher Newsom, 23, and Channon Christian, a 21-year-old University of Tennessee student, were last seen Saturday night while on a date.

The two had been at a friend's apartment and had left to get something to eat, with the plan of then going to another friend's home to watch movies. They never arrived.

Newsom's body was found the next day. He had been shot and his body set on fire along a rail line, Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Rich Knighten said. His girlfriend's vehicle was found nearby.

"The second victim, they kept her for a couple of days and brutally raped and sexually assaulted her," Knighten told The Associated Press in an interview from Louisville. "Then they killed her and dumped her body."

The suspects were arrested Thursday and Friday.

Eric DeWayne Boyd, 34, arrested in Knoxville Thursday night, was charged with being an accessory after the fact in a carjacking, DeBusk said.

Lemaricus Davidson, 25, arrested at an empty house in Knoxville the same day, was charged with federal counts of carjacking, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and use of a firearm in a crime of violence, DeBusk said. Davidson had been released in August from a Tennessee prison after serving five years for carjacking and aggravated robbery.

The other two suspects -- George Geovonni Thomas, 27, and Davidson's brother, Letalvis Cobbins, 24 -- were arrested during in a raid on a house in Lebanon, Ky., about 180 miles north of Knoxville.

Thomas was charged with being an accessory after the fact in a carjacking and Cobbins was charged with being a convicted felon in possession of ammunition, DeBusk said. Court papers said Cobbins' fingerprints were found on a firearm magazine containing two rounds of 9mm ammunition. He had been convicted in 2003 in New York state of third-degree attempted robbery.

Thomas and Cobbins were to appear before a federal magistrate in Louisville late Friday.

Authorities declined to release further information, citing the ongoing investigation.

The victims' families asked for privacy.

"The Newsom family has suffered a tremendous and tragic loss because of the apparent murder of their beloved son, Chris," Newsom family attorney James A.H. Bell said.

The Christian family thanking the community "for all their prayers and everything that has been done during this time."

"We have lost someone who was very beautiful and loving," the family said in a statement. "We are grateful for the outpouring of help that this community has given us and would not be able to get through this without you."

Prosecutor: Carjacker faces death penalty

A federal prosecutor told a 25-year-old man today in U.S. District Court he faces death if convicted of carjacking a Knoxville couple who were found slain this week.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Tracy Stone addressed Lemaricus Davidson during his arraignment before U.S. Magistrate Judge Clifford Shirley.

Davidson is charged with carjacking Christopher Newsom, 23, and Channon Christian, 21, whose bodies were found in North Knoxville. Davidson's fingerprint was found inside Christian's vehicle, according to federal records.

He also is charged with being a felon in possession of an M1 carbine rifle, a rifle he is accused of using to shoot Newsom "several times."

And he is charged with possession of the M1 in commission of a violent crime — carjacking.

Davidson, his brother Letalvis Cobbins, 24, George Thomas and Eric Boyd all have been arrested in connection with the slayings.

Charges have not been made public against Thomas or Boyd, who is due to appear in federal court later today.

Cobbins has been charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm.

During Davidson's arraignment on the criminal complaint, Shirley appointed Knoxville attorney David Eldridge to represent him.

The courtroom was packed with family and relatives of the victims. Also present were state prosecutors who declined to say when state charges, including murder, could be filed.

Federal records unsealed at the hearing indicate that Davidson stole Newsom's cellular telephone, and it was the records from that phone that led in part to his arrest Thursday.

Records released so far do not detail how Christian was killed.

Investigators believe Christian was held hostage and raped repeatedly for days before her death, a federal marshal said Thursday.

Details surfaced on the same day authorities captured Cobbins, Thomas and Davidson.

Davidson was arrested in Knoxville. Cobbins, 24, and Thomas, no age available, were arrested in Lebanon, Ky.

Authorities believe Christian and Newsom were abducted during a Sunday morning carjacking, said Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Rich Knighten of the Western District of Kentucky.

Newsom was shot and his body burned, Knighten said. He said he didn't know how Christian died.

"It apparently started with a carjacking," Knighten said. "They did some really nasty things to this lady. There is some evidence that she was held and sexually abused for a couple of days."

Federal and local authorities found Cobbins and Thomas about 10 a.m. Thursday in a house at 213 Shuck Ave. in Lebanon. Knoxville investigators had learned that Cobbins had a relative there, Knighten said.

Knoxville Police Department spokesman Darrell DeBusk said five KPD investigators went to Lebanon, a town of about 6,000, on Wednesday night.

The men surrendered peacefully to a force that included U. S. marshals, Knoxville police, Knox County Sheriff's Office deputies, Kentucky State Police, and agents from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Knox County Sheriff Tim Hutchison and KCSO Chief Deputy Tom Spangler flew to Lebanon in helicopters. They were sworn in as special deputy marshals and assisted, Knighten said.

"When you have that kind of an overwhelming force, the bad guys just give up," he said.

Authorities also found two women and a child in the house. They were questioned and released, Knighten said. The owner of the house wasn't home but probably won't be charged, he said.

Owen said Thomas faces a criminal charge in Kentucky, but he was unsure of the offense.

Local and federal authorities nabbed Davidson around 3:35 p.m. in an empty house at 1800 Reynolds St. off Western Avenue in the Mechanicsville area. He didn't resist and cried as he left in handcuffs, police said.

None of the men has been charged in the killings. Owen called them "persons of interest," but Knighten said investigators consider all three to be suspects in the case.

DeBusk said investigators would consult the Knox County district attorney general about filing charges in connection with the slayings.

Cobbins remained in the Grayson County jail in Leitchfield, Ky., and could appear in U.S. District Court in Louisville, Ky., today on a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

That charge stems from evidence discovered at the Chipman Street house where Christian's body was found Tuesday, records show.

A complaint filed in federal court by Special Agent Rebecca A. Bobich with the ATF states that investigators found "a firearm magazine containing two rounds of nine-millimeter Winchester ammunition" in the Chipman Street home. Authorities found a fingerprint on the magazine that was matched to Cobbins, the complaint states.

Cobbins was convicted in May 2003 in New York on a charge of felony third-degree attempted robbery, the complaint states. That conviction makes it illegal for Cobbins to possess a firearm or even a bullet, under federal law.

There was no indication if the bullets found in the house were the same kind used to kill Newsom.

Newsom, of Halls, and Christian, of West Knox County, had been dating since November. They told their parents they planned to join friends in an apartment off Washington Pike on Saturday night to watch movies. Christian last spoke to her mother by telephone at 12:35 a.m. Sunday.

At 12:24 p.m. Sunday, a railroad employee on a passing train alerted police about a body along Norfolk Southern tracks between Ninth Avenue and Cherry Street. It was Newsom's body.

At 2 p.m. Tuesday, police armed with a search warrant entered a nearby rental home at 2316 Chipman St. and found Christian's body. Davidson and Cobbins had listed that residence as their address.

Christian's family found her abandoned 2005 Toyota 4-Runner about 1:15 a.m. Monday. It had been left at the intersection of Chipman Street and Glider Avenue, about two blocks from the house where her body was found.

KPD Sgt. Tim Snoderly said the KCSO had determined where Christian's cell phone had last been used and launched a search of the area. Christian's relatives joined the search and found the vehicle. There was no indication who had used Christian's cell phone in that area.

Search warrants reveal disturbing new details in Knoxville double murder investigation

KNOXVILLE (WATE) -- Search warrants in the double murder investigation of a young Knoxville couple reveal disturbing new details about what happened.

According to the affidavits for those search warrants, investigators found the body of Channon Christian, 21, stuffed in a trash can in the kitchen of Lemaricus Davidson's home at 2316 Chipman Street.

Investigators obtained the warrants after they found the body of her boyfriend, Christopher Newsom, 23, near the railroad tracks behind 1701 Whittle Springs on January 7.

Newsom had been shot at least three times. He was bound with rope or bootlaces and wrapped in a sheet. His shoes and socks were missing, along with his ID and iPOD. His body had been burned and physically assaulted.

His father reported Newsom missing the same day police found his body. Christopher lived at home and hadn't returned or been in contact with his family since the night before when he and Christian went on a date.

Another affidavit says Channon Christian lived at home with her parents and was reported missing by her mother. She spoke to her father by phone at 12:30 a.m. January 7, saying she would be home between 2:30 and 3:00 a.m. but she didn't return or call again.

A friend told investigators she last saw Christian around 8:00 p.m. January 6.

Christian's Toyota 4-Runner was later found near 1121 Glider Avenue, about two blocks from where Newsom's body was found.

Police found the car after Christian's cell phone company helped locate it in response to a call from her father. Her parents said the 4-Runner had UT stickers and a Texas Longhorns license plate on the front. When police found it, those items were missing.

A latent fingerprint found in the 4-Runner matched the fingerprints of Lemaricus Davidson. Investigators say Newsom and Christian's parents claim the couple didn't have any connection to Davidson.

When officers went to Davidson's house on Chipman Street, they say the front door was ajar. As they looked for Davidson, they found Christian's body in the trash can.

In that house, investigators also seized evidence that includes: a .9mm magazine, two .22 rounds, a rifle, three black trash bags with more possible evidence, cell phones, iPODs, loose .38 ammunition, a .22 shell casing, a plastic bag with hair and socks and a gun cleaning kit.

Another affidavit says that two more of the suspects who are charged, Letalvis Cobbins and George Thomas, voluntarily told investigators they were at Davidson's house when he and a fourth suspect, Eric Boyd, came in with the couple bound and blindfolded.

Cobbins and Thomas also told investigators that Eric Boyd took Newsom from the house at gunpoint and later returned without him.

And Cobbins and Thomas said they were at the house when Boyd sexually assaulted Christian while she was still alive.

Officers have obtained DNA samples and fingernail scrapings from Boyd as part of their investigation.

All four suspects are facing a variety of felony charges. But so far, none of the men has been charged with murder.

Family and Friends Remember Channon Christian

Knoxville (WVLT) - Family and friends gathered at Weavers Funeral Home Saturday night to say goodbye to 21 year old Channon Christian.

Volunteer TV's Allison Hunt looks at how some peopel are using today's techology, to pay lasting tributes.

The parking lot at Weavers Funeral Home was full with those coming to say goodbye to Channon Christian.

But goodbye does not mean forgotten.

Since the news of her tragic death, those who love her and those who have never met her, have been expressing their grief online.

A post on St. Jude's Children's Hospital website says Channon was a loving Christian, loved by everyone who knew her, and "had a smile that would light up any room."
Several messages give prayers to the family, and recall fond memories of Channon.
A fund has been set up, and the Christian family has asked that donations be made in Channon's memory to the hospital.

And a slideshow, set up on You Tube by the group Farragut Alumni, where Channon went to high school, displaying wonderful memories held in the minds of many.
Channon has forever been put in the thoughts and prayers of thousands of facebook members.

Pictures with friends have been posted along with messages expressing sadness and love some from as far away as London, England.

But no matter how far away, all hold Channon's memory close to their hearts.
Channon's funeral is sunday at 2 PM at Westpark Baptist Church on Middlebrook Pike.
The burial will follow at Highland West Cemetery.

The victims' families asked for privacy.

"The Newsom family has suffered a tremendous and tragic loss because of the apparent murder of their beloved son, Chris," Newsom family attorney James A.H. Bell said.

The Christian family thanking the community "for all their prayers and everything that has been done during this time."

"We have lost someone who was very beautiful and loving," the family said in a statement. "We are grateful for the outpouring of help that this community has given us and would not be able to get through this without you."

This illustrates why nonwhite predation of Whites will continue unabated.

Granted no one advocates any illegality, but one wonders how the parents aren't at the very least expressing their rage verbally as regards this blatant anti-White brutality. Prayer sessions aren't going to get it done, and from the nonwhite perspective most likely are interpreted correctly I might add as a sign of White weakness.

Very reminiscent of the post Wichita slayings, where family members were flocking to church like sheep, perhaps that's why nonwhites feel we can be sheared so easily...
