I have not bothered listening to that fat and uppity jig lately. I quit about four months ago right after I heard the phrase, "da 'conomee be gettin' betta an' betta," coming from those big bootlips of T.J. Graham's. Since then, in reality, the kwa's unemployment has only stayed high, while the kwa's credit rating went down one notch. Has T.J. been chimp-babbling about those events lately?

The Rev. T.J. Graham — the revolutionary WVOL disc jockey who wildly and, at times, bafflingly veered between firebrand conservative and old-school liberal during his thought-provoking afternoon talk show — died Monday of an undisclosed cause. He was 50.

Graham, whose given name was Anthony Hyde, was widely considered Nashville’s most controversial and intriguing radio personality. He was known for his tireless research of multiple topics and his flamboyant verbal style. Listeners either embraced the man — or loathed him.

John Heidelberg, WVOL president, said the public response to Graham’s death has been “overwhelming.”

“I [have been] inundated with calls,” Heidelberg said.

Heidelberg, known for giving Oprah Winfrey her start in radio, said he pushed Graham to be controversial. However, the outspoken talk radio host learned how to straddle the cliff’s edge of decency without careening over it. At least most of the time.

“There will never be another T.J.,” said Heidelberg, who will handle Graham’s afternoon spot for the time being. “He was one of a kind. He had a quality that fit well for the program.”

A wake for Hyde will be held between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Friday at Nashville-based Corinthian Missionary Baptist, located at 819 33rd Ave. N. A funeral is slated for noon Saturday in Springfield, Hyde’s hometown. A location will soon be announced.

Controversial radio show host dead at 50

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
A powerful voice on the Nashville airwaves has died.

Radio station WVOL said host T.J. Graham, 50, passed away Monday after having a stroke over the weekend.

Graham was known as the "King of Controversy" on the station with a call-in show that handled topics like race relations and immigration.

Earlier this year vandals cut wires to the radio tower, and Graham believed it was done by people angry about his show.

Rev. T.J. Graham found his 'calling' on radio

Whenever Anthony Hyde was on the air at WVOL-1470 in Nashville, the radio station’s call-in board was always lit up.

That remained true in the last two weeks when news that Mr. Hyde – better known by his radio persona, Rev. T.J. Graham – had been hospitalized and later died.

“The phone stayed lit up,” said John Heidelberg, owner of WVOL. “He had a large, large following.”

Mr. Hyde, 50, died Monday due to complications from a stroke on Oct. 31. He was an ordained Baptist minister.

He’d been a regular on WVOL for the past five years, hosting Open Forum, a call-in talk show.

Rev. Enoch Fuzz, a friend of Mr. Hyde’s who will preach at his funeral, called the talk show host controversial on the air and kind and community-minded off the air.

“He would hang up on folks and say, ‘Don’t call here any more,’” said Fuzz, pastor of Corinthian Missionary Baptist Church in Nashville. “He was the Democrats’ answer to Rush Limbaugh.”

According to his bio at WVOL, Mr. Hyde had worked in radio for 25 years, starting at WDBL AM 1590 in his hometown of Springfield.

He is survived by his parents, A.C. and Etta Hyde, three siblings, three sons and a granddaughter.

“One of the reasons he was on the radio was, ever since he was small, he loved to talk. It was his calling,” Etta Hyde said.

A wake for Mr. Hyde will be held 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday at Corinthian Missionary Baptist, 819 33rd Ave N. in Nashville. A funeral will be held at noon Saturday at Springfield Baptist Church.
