BRIGHTON -- A former charter high school teacher who is the wife of the principal has surrendered to authorities on a charge of having sexual contact with a male student.

Carrie McCandless, 29, faces charges of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. If convicted, she faces up to 12 years in prison.

Investigators say the alleged incident took place in late October during a Brighton Charter High School trip to Estes Park. Investigators said McCandless spent time alon
e in a room at the YMCA of the Rockies camp with the 17-year-old boy.

McCandless turned herself in Tuesday.

McCandless has been fired from her job teaching social studies at Brighton Charter High, where she had worked for six years. Her husband, Chris McCandless, is the principal. They did not immediately return phone calls seeking comment.

Carrie McCandless" first court appearance was scheduled for Dec. 5 in Larimer County District Court in Fort Collins.

An English teacher at Trabuco Hills High School is free on bail while authorities continue investigating allegations that she had "substantial sexual contact" with a male student, a sheriff's spokesman said.

Alyssa Ann Johnson, 31, of Tustin, was arrested Wednesday evening at her home by sheriff's investigators, who received word of the allegation through officials at the Mission Viejo school, said sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino.

"We heard about it through school social services," he said.

"He took an English class from her," Amormino said, declining to release any additional information that could identify the youth, other than to say that he is "older than 14 and younger than 18."

Johnson, who was booked on suspicion of oral copulation, posted $50,000 bail and was released on Thanksgiving Day, Amormino said.

Johnson has been placed on administrative leave from the job she held about four years, the spokesman said.

WOODBRIDGE, N.J. -- A high school teacher was arrested Tuesday on charges that she sent several sexually explicit text messages to a 17-year-old student who attends the school where she teaches and a 16-year-old student whom she previously taught.

Karen Binder, 42, of Manalapan, faces two counts of second-degree official misconduct. If convicted, she could face up to 10 years in state prison on each count.

The 17-year-old boy's parents notified officials at Colonia High School in Woodbridge last month about the sexually explicit text messages on their son's mobile phone, police told The Star-Ledger of Newark.


Binder asked for the boy's phone number during school hours because she said she needed to discuss something with him, according to the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office.

Binder told him in her messages that she wanted to perform a sex act on him, police said.

An investigation revealed that Binder was also sending sexually explicit text messages to a 16-year-old boy she previously taught at Iselin Middle School, police said. The messages became sexual during 2006 and continued until recently, police said. The boy is not a student at Colonia High School, police said.

Binder was being held on $150,000 bail at the Middlesex County jail in North Brunswick.

Her lawyer, William Koy of Morristown, said he has not yet seen the charges against Binder and would comment after he had reviewed them.

"She's an outstanding teacher. We feel very comfortable that she has not committed any criminal act whatsoever," he said.

Officials from the Woodbridge Police Department did not return calls to The Associated Press. No one answered the phone at Colonia High School late Tuesday afternoon.

WILMINGTON, Del. -- A sixth-grade science teacher who was accused of having sex with a 13-year-old student has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Rachel L. Holt, 35, had pleaded guilty to second-degree rape. She sobbed in court Friday as Superior Court Judge Calvin L. Scott gave her the mandatory minimum sentence.

Prosecutors had wanted Scott to sentence Holt to the maximum of 25 years.

Holt was initially charged with more than 20 counts of first-degree rape.

Police accused her of having sex with the boy 28 times during an intense weeklong affair. She was also accused of plying the boy with alcohol and allowing him to drive her car.

Police said the investigation began after the boy's father reported he was suspicious of his son's relationship with Holt, who was his science teacher.

Holt's attorney, John S. Malik, said the sentence was much longer than what teachers convicted in similar cases got. He reviewed 40 such cases and found the average was 18 months to two years.

In her brief comments to the court, Holt apologized "to everyone who suffered" as a result of her actions, including the victim and his family.

"I hope you can forgive me," she said. "I know what I did was wrong."

The victim's uncle, who spoke on behalf of the family, asked for the maximum sentence, saying Holt had tarnished the reputation of teachers and violated his nephew's trust.

"He had his innocence taken away through betrayal," he said.

Prosecutors File Rape Charges Against Jefferson County Teacher

Jefferson County, Mo., prosecutors on Friday filed rape charges against a substitute teacher in the Dunklin R-V School District.

Teresa Engelbach, 21, of Pevely was charged with three counts of statutory rape and one count of statutory sodomy amid allegations she had sexual relations with a 14-year-old male student

The eight-grade student attends Senn-Thomas Middle School in Herculaneum.

Authorities said none of the incidents occurred on school property and no other students are involved in the investigation.

Engelbach also substituted at Herculaneum High School.

Investigators said Engelbach is currently being treated at an area hospital for an unknown illness. She is expected to turn herself in once she is released.

Engelbach's bond is set at $25,000.

TORONTO (Mar 10, 2007) A female Toronto high school teacher is facing sexual exploitation charges after she allegedly struck up a romantic relationship with a male student.

A tip to Toronto Crime Stoppers earlier this month kicked off an investigation that culminated in the arrest of 35-year-old Paola Queen.

Police allege the woman began a romantic and sexual relationship with a student shortly after she started teaching in September 2005.

The student's age has not been disclosed.

Queen has been released from jail on the condition that she not attend the school where the relationship allegedly began.

She is to appear in Toronto court on Apr.17.

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - March 25, 2007 - Sex assault charges are filed against an English teacher accused of having a sexual relationship with a student at the high school where she taught.

State authorities say 33-year-old Michelle Morano of Cedar Grove, who taught at West Essex Regional High School in North Caldwell, began a sexual relationship with a then 17-year-old male student in late 2006 that continued until January.

The student is now 18.

The relationship was discovered during an ongoing investigation of insurance fraud. But state officials declined to elaborate on the case.

Morano's was being held in the Essex County jail on $200,000 dollars bond.

A HEADMISTRESS and teacher at an exclusive Manhattan Montessori school, accused of having sexual relations with two young teen students, was convicted on Thursday (March 29) today of sodomizing one of them when he was 13.

Lina Sinha, 40, showed no emotion as the jury foreman reported a partial decision of 11 guilty and two not guilty verdicts on various other charges. The jurors had reported earlier they were deadlocked on the six rape counts against her.

Assistant District Attorney Rachel Hochhauser told the judge her office intended to retry Sinha on the six rape counts.

State Supreme Court Justice Carol Berkman ordered Sinha, who was free on $50,000 (Ô�Å¡£25,548) bail, jailed on $3.5m (Ô�Å¡£1.7m) bond. The judge noted the lengthy sentence Sinha faces and her family`s substantial assets as reasons for raising the bail.

The judge scheduled sentencing for April 19. When Sinha was first arrested, prosecutors told the court she was a flight risk because she has ties to India.

The key witnesses against Sinha were the two students she was accused of seducing, the first student in June 1996, when he was 13 and an eighth grader, and the second when he was 12 and a seventh grader.

The first student, now a 24-year-old police officer, tried to end the affair in 2004, prosecutors said, and the teacher tried to exact revenge by reporting to police at least 10 times that he raped a young girl and brutally assaulted Sinha.

In October 2005, police charged Sinha with raping him. Meanwhile, prosecutors said, Sinha started a sexual relationship in January 2001 with the second student. That boy, now 19 and on probation from his last arrest, said he had sex with Sinha at least six times when he was 12.

Sinha was arrested on charges of raping him in May 2006. Prosecutors said Sinha tried to bribe the youth to lie to investigators by buying him sneakers and a prepaid telephone and by giving him $400 (Ô�Å¡£204) cash.

Sinha has been a teacher for 16 years at the Montessori International School of New York, which was established by her parents in 1969 and encourages students to learn and develop their creativity at their own pace. The parents own two similar schools in the city.

Besides the sodomy and witness bribery counts, Sinha was convicted on several counts of criminal impersonation and falsely reporting an incident, all misdemeanours punishable by up to a year in jail.

NEWARK, N.J. -- A teacher at the private Newark Boys Chorus School was charged after allegations of a sex affair involving a student surfaced, authorities said.

Tracy Booth, 31, was charged on Tuesday with sexually assaulting one of her students -- a 13-year-old -- during encounters at her Morris County home and in a hotel.

Booth was held on $200,000 bail following the arrest that took place at her home in Mount Tabor.

The case developed following an anonymous March 1 call to the state's Division of Youth and Family Services.

(Laurens County) - Another employee who once worked for the Laurens County school system is accused of having sex with a student.

Karen Robbins, 49, has been arrested by Clinton police on three counts of a lewd act on a child, and three counts of criminal sexual conduct with a child.

Robbins used to work for the Laurens County school district.

WSPA-TV reports the incidents took place back in 2005. Arrest warrants claim the woman has sex with the teen victim at her house and in her car. The incidents happened over a three-month period while she was employed at the Thornwell School.

The school's president, Robert Stansell, told WSPA-TV, "I'm dumbfounded. I'm stunned. I'm offended."

The woman taught special education for a decade at Thornwell, and left the school when it closed in 2006. She then taught at Bell Street Middle School until August of this year.

The victim is 15-years-old. The district notified authorities when they uncovered information about the incidents in a classroom.

Stansell told WSPA-TV, "She was a good teacher, and a trusted member of our academic team. That's what makes the devastation so profound, I think."

Robbins is free on $90,000 bond. She'll be back on November 9.

Judge orders teacher jailed on enticement charge

A Leroy High School teacher accused of having sex with a student began a sexual relationship with the boy after he had dated the woman's daughter, an FBI agent testified this morning.

Following the 90-minute hearing in Mobile, U.S. Magistrate Judge Bert Milling Jr. ordered Charlene Schmitz to remain jailed pending trial on a pair of federal enticement charges.

Special Agent Paul Roche testified that Schmitz, 55, had extensive communications via the Internet, text messages and on a cell phone with the child, who was 14 at the time. He testified that Schmitz gave the boy's mother money to pay for the cell phone that he used to communicate with her.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Maria Murphy urged Milling not to fall victim to a double standard since the defendant is a woman and her alleged victim male.

"We believe detention is the only appropriate and necessary method of protection the community has from this defendant," she said. "This defendant is a sexual predator who preyed on a 14-year-old child. ... Electronic monitoring will not stop this defendant from leaving with the child."

Defense attorney Don Briskman argued that his client has strong family ties to the Leroy community, where she was born and raised, and that there is no indication she tried to leave the area while out on bail on state charges. He noted her "completely unblemished criminal record" prior to her arrest over the summer on second-degree rape and second-degree sodomy charges.

"Pretrial detention should be the exception rather than the rule," he said.

TAMPA, Fla. -- A former middle school teacher serving house arrest for having sex with a 14-year-old student was arrested Tuesday for violating her probation, state records showed.

According to a Department of Corrections report, Debra Lafave discussed her personal life and other subjects with a teenage waitress at a restaurant where they both worked. One of the terms of her probation had been that she was not allowed to have unsupervised contact with any minors without permission.

Lafave could technically be sentenced to prison for up to 15 years for a probation violation, but people close to the case say it's unlikely she'll serve any time behind bars for such a minor offense.

Her attorney, John Fitzgibbons, said he was disappointed that her probation officer ordered her arrest for what he called an "insignificant" violation. He characterized the conversation between Lafave and the 17-year-old girl as "typical workplace conversation that women have with their women colleagues."

"It was a workplace friendship - no more, no less," he said.

Lafave, 26, is serving three years house arrest and seven years probation after pleading guilty to having sex with the 14-year-old boy in a classroom and her home in June 2004.

She was arrested Tuesday morning and released from jail later on her promise to appear in court for a hearing later.

State attorney's office spokeswoman Pam Bondi said prosecutors will not comment on Lafave's arrest until the court hearing.

Probation records show Lafave worked at a Tampa-area restaurant called Danny Boy's until last month when she started working as a receptionist at her mother's barbershop.

While working at the restaurant, the report said, she and a fellow waitress discussed "non-work related issues such as family problems, friends, high school, personal life, boyfriend issues and sexual issues. ... (Lafave) received no permission from the court to have any contact with minors."

Lafave was ordered by her probation officer to quit working at the restaurant "due to the current allegations," the report said.

The teenage girl was interviewed as part of the investigation.

Fitzgibbons said Lafave has done so well on her first two years of house arrest that he plans to ask a judge to convert the final year of house arrest to straight probation, which is less restrictive.

The arrest surprised everyone, he said.

"I don't think anyone felt this was a huge issue," he said.

Other terms of her probation include sex offender treatment, random drug testing and 200 hours of community service, which she has already completed. She also is prohibited from capitalizing on the worldwide media attention she received after her arrest.

She pleaded guilty to two counts of lewd and lascivious battery in November 2005.
