WATSONVILLE (BCN) ― A Watsonville high school English teacher suspected of having a sexual relationship with at least one student and giving alcohol to another student could face up to 7 years and 4 months in prison if convicted of all charges, according to the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office.

Tanya Thienngern, 37, of Aptos, surrendered to police at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday accompanied by her attorney. She was released from Santa Cruz County jail after posting $25,000 bail, supervising assistant district attorney Andrew Isaac said.

Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Thienngern on Tuesday following an investigation that began on May 10 into allegations that the Pajaro Valley High School teacher was having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old male student.

Further investigation revealed Thienngern might have had sexual contact with more than one student and had provided alcohol to students, according to police. She is accused of giving alcohol to a 17-year-old boy with the knowledge that he was going to drive afterward, Isaac said.

The alleged incidents occurred in the fall of 2009.

Pajaro Valley Unified School District officials placed Thienngern on administrative leave once they were informed of the allegations.

Albert Roman, assistant superintendent of human resources for the school district, said an internal investigation is under way to determine the future of Thienngern's employment.

"The safety of our students is our primary concern first and foremost," Roman said. "We take this matter very seriously. We are examining the possibility of taking personnel action against her."

Roman said a decision will be made by next week.

Thienngern is expected to appear in court on June 23, when she will be arraigned on two felony counts of unlawful intercourse with a minor, one felony count of child endangerment, and one misdemeanor count of immoral behavior in the presence of a minor, Isaac said.

She has been teaching at Pajaro Valley High School since August 2006.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Police Department's tip line at (831) 728-3544 or the investigations bureau at (831) 768-3352.

KSDK -- A teacher at a North St. Louis County high school is in police custody Thursday, accused of sleeping with a student.

The St. Louis County Prosecutor's Office charged Kellie Ryan of Maryland Heights with one count of second-degree statutory rape and two counts of statutory sodomy. She's being held on a $25,000 bond.

Ryan, 26, is a physical education teacher at Trinity High School. She's accused of sleeping with a 15-year-old student. Authorities said the alleged crimes did not occur on school property or at the student's home. They suspect Ryan's car was involved.

The alleged crimes happened between November 2009 and April 2010.

Police said Ryan did not have a prior criminal history.

The school released a statement late Thursday afternoon saying it had conducted a background check before hiring Ryan and that background check did not reveal anything. Ryan has been on administrative leave since April.

Heather Zeo, the former North Penn High School teacher who had sex with a student in a parking lot, will spend the next 23 months in a county prison.

Zeo, 37, of Warrington, who pleaded guilty in May, and was sentenced on Thursday in Montgomery County Court to 23 months in jail at the county prison in Eagleville.

Zeo had sex with the 17-year-old boy in a minivan in a shopping center parking lot in Montgomeryville.

Zeo no longer teaches at North Penn.

Zeo faced charges of tampering with evidence, corruption of minors and obstruction of justice.

Investigators said Zeo told one of the juvenile witnesses in the case to delete all electronic communications between the two.

Prosecutors Zeo, while she was a math teacher at North Penn High School, began having sexual conversations and contact with the student both on and off school grounds in April 2009. The relationship also extended to phone calls and Internet chats.

"The teacher was using Facebook to begin and continue a very inappropriate relationship with two students," said Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Ferman last year.

The investigation revealed that Zeo had liaisons with the student on multiple occasions in her classroom and continued the improper conduct through the middle of May 2009.

The wife and mother of three is also accused of an inappropriate relationship with another 17-year-old male student, including sexually-explicit Internet chats and several invitations to come to her classroom when she was alone, prosecutors said.

Zeo has been a math teacher at North Penn High since 2001.

School district officials said she had the appropriate clearances and, in fact, she doesn't have a police record of any kind.

A former teacher at a suburban Philadelphia school district has been sentenced to one to 23 months in prison for having a sexual relationship with one student and having explicit conversations with another.

"Beware: I am a bubble of energy...and I'm contagious!!" is how ex-North Penn High School teacher Heather Lynne Zeo described herself on her Facebook profile at the time the encounters took place last year.

The married mother of three pleaded guilty to itching her energy scratch (misdemeanor corruption of minors charges) with the two 11th grade boys in her home room class.

Zeo, 37, was sentenced Thursday in Montgomery County Court in Norristown.

Zeo admitted having sex with the 17-year-old student. The tryst between the Mennonite mom and the student started after Zeo sent a Facebook friend request to the teen. It got physical at school where they first kissed and touched. Then the romance moved from the classroom to Zeo's minivan and from petting to having sex in different parking spots, including a shopping center, according to investigators.

Zeo, a Mennonite from Warrington, also admitted to having sexually explicit conversations with the second student.

A female high school band teacher is scheduled to go on trial Monday in Orange County Superior Court for allegedly having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old male student for nearly a year.

Carlie Attebury, 31, of Orange, is charged with seven felony counts. If convicted on all counts, she faces up to seven years in state prison.

Attebury is accused of befriending the student in 2007 while working at El Modena High School in Orange. The two regularly met at Attebury’s home and exchanged sexually explicit text messages, prosecutors say.

Attebury came to the notice of police a few months later when she reported an extortion attempt by a former El Modena student who demanded $3,500 and sexually explicit photos to keep quiet about Attebury’s affair with the teen.
Miguel Lopez, who was 23 at the time, was arrested and eventually pleaded guilty to one count of felony extortion. He was sentenced to three years probation.

In 2008, parents contacted El Modena’s principal after they allegedly saw her caressing the 15-year-old’s hair at a school event.

Update to this post.

GARDEN CITY, Mich. - A judge sentenced 46-year old Virginia Homberg to 10-24 years in prison Friday for having sex with her teenage student.

The prosecutor read a letter from the victim during sentencing Friday.

"I didn't want to tell anyone because I thought I would get in trouble. I wish this would never have happened. I don't wish this for any kid. Now, I can never trust teachers again," the letter said.

The ordeal first began when the boy was 14-years old and lasted until he was 16.

During the trial, witness testimony revealed the sexual assaults occured inside classrooms at Garden City High School and also inside the boy's home.

"It's something nobody should ever have to go through. Especially someone ... a teacher that you trust. She has destroyed my family, and especially my son," the boy's mother told FOX 2's Taryn Asher. She requested that her identity be concealed.

It was school administrators who first contacted the mother after a confidant of Homberg came forward and told authorities about the teacher's sexual relations with her young student.

Homberg was also convicted of sending sexually explicit photos to the student.

The mother is speaking out, trying to alert parents that this is more common than they may think.

"This is happening more and more. Whether a teacher is doing it to a male or female student, something needs to be done about this," the mother said.

Her son is now being homeschooled.

"He's not the same outgoing, fun-loving kid he used to be ... she took that from him," the boy's mother said in court Friday.

MONROE, NC (WBTV) - A former Parkwood High School teacher is facing criminal charges and may lose her teaching license after she was arrested on Tuesday for having a sexual relationship with a student.

According to Union County Public Schools officials, a student went to school administration last Friday and reported possible inappropriate conduct between a student and a teacher, 27-year-old Melissa Jane Bitz.

The Union County Sheriff's Office performed an investigation and after presenting their evidence to the school system, Bitz was set to be suspended. The teacher opted to resign before the suspension could be enforced.

Officials would not comment on the age of the student involved in the relationship. They did say that the person who reported the inappropriate conduct was not the student involved in the relationship.

Bitz bonded out of the Union County Jail overnight Tuesday. She now faces possible suspension of her teaching license after the case is handed over to the NC school board.

She is charged with sexual act by a custodian

This one is not a teacher, but a sick story, nonetheless.

The wife of an Arizona county supervisor has pleaded guilty in a sexual misconduct case involving a teenage boy.

Prosecutors say Susan Brock pleaded guilty Monday to three counts of attempted sexual conduct with a minor. She's scheduled to be sentenced March 16.

Brock was arrested in October by police in the Phoenix suburb of Chandler after the parents of a 17-year-old boy learned of steamy text messages reportedly exchanged between their son and the 48-year-old Brock.

Officers interviewed the boy, who reported he had been meeting Brock for sexual trysts since he was 14.

Brock's husband, Maricopa County Supervisor Fulton Brock, announced in November that he is filing for divorce.

The Brocks' 21-year-old daughter also has been charged with sexual misconduct with the same teenage boy.

A Warren County grand jury on Friday indicted Stacy Schuler of Springboro on 16 counts of sexual battery, a third-degree felony; and three misdemeanor counts of offenses involving an underaged person.

Schuler, who will turn 33 next week, allegedly had sexual contact with the students on five different occasions between August and December, according to officials with the Warren County Prosecutor’s Office. She also allegedly bought alcohol for the students, according to the indictment.

Prosecutors said the alleged sex acts, mostly with football players at Mason High School, occurred off school grounds.

Schuler, who is single according to prosecutors, turned herself into authorities Friday and was arraigned in Warren County Common Pleas Court. Her bond was set at $50,000 and was ordered to stay away from the students. She was in the Warren County Jail at 5 p.m.

Schuler faces up to 81 years in jail if convicted on all charges.

Authorities also said George Coates, a Mason High School assistant principal who resigned last week, had allegedly sent Schuler text messages involving sexual images.

Schuler apparently told school authorities about the alleged messages before she was asked to leave.

Police said Coates is not under investigation and his alleged acts did not involve Mason students.

Coates submitted a letter of resignation Jan. 28, citing personal reasons. Mason’s school board is expected to vote on the matter at next Tuesday’s meeting.

He was hired as an assistant principal in December 2001 and his annual salary at the time of his resignation was $88,000.

Schuler, a health and physical education teacher at the 3,048 student-populated Mason High School, has been under investigation by police after an anonymous tip was called to school officials during the week of Jan. 10, according to Tracey Carson, schools spokeswoman.

Carson said Schuler was placed on paid administrative leave on Jan. 19 while school officials and police investigated the matter. During that time, Schuler was prohibited from attending district events or being on district property.

“As high school principal, I am committed to the safety and well-being of our students, and will not tolerate behavior that does not conform to that goal. Our staff is prepared to help our students during this situation, and know how it important it is to continue to build trust with our students and families,” said Principal Mindy McCarty-Stewart, through a release issued by Carson.

Carson said the district reported the allegations to the Ohio Department of Education, and the superintendent will recommend to the Mason Board of Education that Schuler be suspended without pay as the district begins termination proceedings. The school board is expected to act upon those recommendations at its next meeting on Tuesday.

Her duties included work as an athletic trainer for the high school’s girls and boys sports teams. She earned $53,194 in 2008, according to her personnel file.

Schuler had received a disciplinary action in November 2007 after two students were in the teacher’s classroom when they were not supposed to be there and were missing other classes, according to her personnel file.

At the time of the action, the teacher said the two students needed to work out some personal problems and remained in the teacher’s classroom, according to her file.

Schuler graduated from Centerville High School in 1996 and Wright State University in 2000. She was a student teacher at Fairmont High School in Kettering from 1999-2000, according to her file.

In her Health Education Philosophy that Schuler wrote as part of her application to work at Mason, Schuler wrote that she wanted to teach students about major risk factors for teenagers including “sexual behaviors that result in disease, STDs, and unwanted pregnancies.”

In the same statement Schuler said “Today’s society has its own standards of behavior, values, and norms that do not necessarily reflect healthy living,” and later asked “How can a child who is sexually active as a teenager learn about STDs and how to prevent unwanted pregnancies?”

Ex-Sussex County teacher admits having sexual relations with student

FRANKFORD — A former student-teacher at a Sussex County elementary school pleaded guilty today to having sexual relations with one of her students, including trysts in her car and in her bedroom.

As part of a plea bargain agreement, Lindsay Massaro pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree sexual assault, and the state will recommend a four-year prison sentence with parole supervision for life.

“Do you realize that it is almost certain you will be sentenced to state prison? Is that clear?” Superior Court Judge N. Peter Conforti asked the 25-year-old Massaro.

“Yes,” replied Massaro, her voice sometimes cracking during the 30-minute court hearing in Newton.

Massaro, a former eighth-grade student-teacher at the Frankford Elementary School, was arrested March 30, 2009, and accused of having a sexual relationship with a male student who was at least 13 years old and younger than 16, according to the arrest affidavit.

In court today, Massaro admitted her victim was a 15-year-old boy, whose father reported the case to law enforcement.

According to the affidavit, Massaro admitted to having a consensual sexual relationship with the boy.

Massaro, of Frankford, is tentatively scheduled to be sentenced on April 15, pending the outcome of a psychological evaluation to determine if there was a “pattern of repetitive and compulsive behavior,” the judge said.

If she is found to be a compulsive offender, Conforti said she would be sentenced to the Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center in Avenel and her release would have to be approved by the state parole board.

“You could spend more time in treatment than in state prison,” the judge told her.

Brunswick middle school teacher guilty of having sex with eighth-grade student she taught

9288612-small.jpg

MEDINA, Ohio -- A 36-year-old Brunswick middle school teacher was found guilty Tuesday of having sex with an eighth-grade student she taught and giving alcohol to another.

A Medina County jury found Kelly Covic, of Brunswick Hills, guilty of sexual battery and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. She is to be sentenced 9 a.m. April 4.

Her attorney, Richard G. Lillie of Cleveland, said he will appeal.

Covic was accused of having sexual contact with two Edwards Middle School students in 2009. She faced six charges, but was acquitted on four.

The jury deliberated two hours on Monday and 2 1/2 hours Tuesday before issuing a verdict.

The two teenage boys testified last week that they had sex with Covic when she was their eighth grade teacher. One of the boys also said he often went to Covic's home to drink and play cards.

Her lawyer told jurors the teenagers attempted to extort money from Covic -- one sent a text message demanding $4,000. He also said co-workers who testified against Covic had changed their accounts over time and were motivated to say what school administrators expected of them to say to keep their jobs.

"I'm surprised at the verdict," Lillie said. "This bodes ill for all teachers in the state. They need to be concerned about these types of prosecutions."
