Philadelphia Police Asking For Public’s Help To Find Suspects As City Hits 503 Homicides

By Wakisha BaileyNovember 28, 2021 at 8:26 am

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — As of Sunday morning, there have been at least 503 homicides in 2021 in Philadelphia — surpassing the previous record of 500 set back in 1990. Police say the latest homicide happened last night in Olney, where a man was shot nearly 20 times on West Duncannon Avenue.

Last week, Mayor Jim Kenney said the number of lives lost to gun violence is out of control.
“It’s heartbreaking, heart-wrenching, it’s terrible to have to get up every morning and look at the numbers,” Kenney said last week.
City officials and police also making a plea for the public to help in locating the suspects.
As the holiday weekend comes to a close, a 33-year-old man was shot 18 times throughout his body. He was pronounced dead at Einstein Medical Center just after 7 p.m.
Hours earlier just before 3 p.m., a 51-year-old man was gunned down in the 700 block of North 10th Street when he was leaving a nearby convenience store.
Friends and family identified him as Michael Muhammed. They also say too many people are dying from senseless gun violence.

Surge In Carjackings Another Troubling Statistic Confronting Philadelphia Crime Fighters

By Alecia ReidDecember 9, 2021 at 6:18 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A surge in carjackings is another troubling statistic confronting Philadelphia crime fighters. The latest was caught on a security camera.
The number of carjackings in the city is increasing at an alarming rate, and in at least three recent incidents, weapons were involved.
Surveillance video of an early morning carjacking in Holmesburg shows the victim running away from the suspects.
Police say the suspects knew the victim’s routine and waited for the man and his girlfriend to come out to move their Dodge Chargers.
The thieves only got away with one of the cars, but not before police say they shot the 31-year-old man.
“It’s scary. It’s too close to home,” one neighbor said. “There are a lot of children on this street. Families going in and out all times of the day and night. It’s just really scary.”
The concerned neighbor doesn’t want to reveal her identity for fear the suspects will return.
Wednesday night, near Temple University, police arrested one of three suspects who stole a Chevy Cavalier at gunpoint.
On Tuesday night, a vehicle was stolen with a 6-year-old-girl inside. The next morning, the car was left across the street from a police station with the child inside unharmed.
This isn’t isolated.
Police are reporting dramatic increases over the past few years. The number of carjackings jumped from 225 in 2019, to 409 last year and, to date in 2021, 720.

Police have released surveillance video from another carjacking on Nov. 19, where a 54-year-old victim parked his car on the 2200 block of South 20th Street. As he and his family exited the vehicle, two men held them up at gunpoint, robbed them and then stole their vehicle.
Authorities are reminding everyone to be aware of their surroundings and make sure they get in and out of their car swiftly.
If you recognize anyone in those surveillance videos, you’re urged to call authorities.

Rash Of Gun Violence Leaves At Least 2 People Dead In Philadelphia Wednesday Night

By Jasmine PayouteDecember 16, 2021 at 5:00 am

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A rash of deadly gun violence across Philadelphia left two people dead Wednesday night. In just the course of an hour, five people were shot in two separate shootings.
In one of the shootings, a man was outside talking to a friend when he was gunned down.
At least five people were shot and two of them died. These deaths add to a homicide total that is now over 530.
Evidence markers line yet another street in Philadelphia as police comb through another deadly crime scene.
“They were able to see the victim collapse on the sidewalk and the victim gets up and walks just a few feet south where he collapses again and that’s where police found him,” Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said.
According to police, a double shooting captured on video claimed the life of a 58-year-old man on the 4300 block of Carlisle Street.
Their investigation reveals the victim was talking to a friend when he was shot at least six times Wednesday around 6 o’clock.
The friend, a 23-year-old man, was injured.
“Where the victim collapsed we found his glasses and we found a cell phone which we believe belongs to the victim and that cell phone continues to ring occasionally on the scene,” Small said.
About five miles away on the 3100 block of Barnett Street was a similar scene.
Philadelphia police say a gunman shot and killed a 23-year-old in a triple shooting.
“Three shooting victims all from the 3100 block of Barnett Street and one of them, 23, shot multiple times was pronounced dead,” Small said.
A gunman fired the shots around 5:30 Wednesday afternoon. Police say two other people were injured.
The violence unfolded right across the street from a playground.
“He was able to open the door and fall into the street and that’s where police found him,” Small said.
Currently, there’s no description of the shooter or shooters in either shooting. Anyone with information is urged to contact police.

Police say a 23-year-old man was shot twice in his torso, twice in his back, and once in his abdomen on East Clearfield and C Streets. He is in critical condition at Temple University Hospital. Officers say they do have a suspect in that shooting.

Just a couple blocks down, another man was shot on the 2900 block of Kensington Avenue, right off East Indiana Avenue. He was shot once in the abdomen, once in his right leg, and twice in his left leg and listed in critical condition at Temple Hospital.

1-Year-Old Girl Reunited With Family As Philadelphia Police Investigate 2 Separate Overnight Carjackings

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Police are investigating two carjackings in Philadelphia overnight on Monday, including one where a child was in the backseat. The child is a 1-year-old and luckily, she was reunited with her mother, but as we’ve seen in the past some of these carjackings have had worse endings.
Police tell Eyewitness News that carjackings are becoming a growing trend in Philadelphia.
Police reported 220 carjackings in 2019, then that number jumped to 341 last year. In 2021, there have been 793 carjackings — which has more than doubled.

The latest happened overnight in Southwest Philadelphia. A 25-year-old man was shot in the left shoulder during a carjacking, then his SUV was stolen. He was later transported to Presbyterian Hospital, where he was placed in stable condition, according to police.
On Sunday around 11:30 p.m., police responded to another SUV stolen in North Philadelphia with a 1-year-old girl in the backseat. Eventually, the child and the car were abandoned at 30th and Girard Streets. The child has since been reunited with her family.
1-Year-Old Girl Reunited With Family As Philadelphia Police Investigate 2 Separate Overnight Carjackings
Last week, police arrested several suspects following a carjacking involving Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon where the suspects took off with her car and government-issued cell phone.
Police say there are things you can do to protect yourself.
“If you are confronted and someone demands your car, the first thing you should do is exactly what occurred yesterday when the congresswoman was confronted,” Frank Vanore, Chief Inspector of the Philadelphia Police Department, said last week. “You give up the car because the car is not worth more than your life. Try to keep your cell phone in your pocket, not laying the car somewhere.”
Police say the only way to get a grip on these types of incidents is for people to come forward with any information that could lead to an arrest.
And, as we’ve seen in the past some of these carjackings, have become fatal.

Philadelphia Anti-Violence Advocates Rattled As 2021 Wraps Up With 5 People Shot In Gun Battle

By Natasha BrownDecember 31, 2021 at 5:46 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Five people were shot late Thursday night in Germantown. Police say 87 bullets were fired.
The dramatic shooting underscored a tragically violent year for the city of Philadelphia.
Another night of violence on the streets of Philadelphia as surveillance video captures as many as six gunmen firing on a crowd outside of a bodega, in the 5100 block of Germantown Avenue at Collom Street. A 21-year-old woman was shot multiple times and four males were also hit with bullets as some exchanged gunfire with the shooters.
This latest shooting happened around 11:30 p.m. Thursday night.
Two and a half hours later in Kensington, a 29-year-old man was shot and killed.
Historic levels of violence in the city has many anti-violence groups rattled, just hours before a new year begins.
“When you’re looking at family and loved one living in the city of Philadelphia. It impacts all of us. Many people do not feel safe,” CeaseFirePA President Adam Garber said.
For many, the uneasy feeling of fear is warranted with Philadelphia ending the 2021 year with more than 560 homicides and more than 2,200 shooting victims.
Community activists and anti-violence organizations have been putting boots on the ground in violence ravaged neighborhoods, hoping to put a dent in rising crime.
“The act of going to the grocery store or sitting outside or playing even just having a wonderful holiday meal feels dangerous,” Garber said.
City officials and many state legislators are pouring money into crime-fighting initiatives and anti-violence community groups who often have more of an understanding of neighborhood needs. CeaseFirePA has been one of those groups rallying for more help to combat the daily flow of gun violence.
“It’s’ not untractable, it’s not unsolvable so if we can get a handle on illegal firearm trafficking, get these resources to community violence prevention programs that have cut violence by 50% or more,” Garber said.
Although we’re ending the year with record violence, many say they’re at the table to improve the situation in 2022.

Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw addressed the city’s gun violence problem in her end of the year note, which you can read below.
Happy New Year to each and every one of you!

As we bid farewell to yet another year, I wanted to begin the year off with a few thoughts and some encouraging words.

After experiencing unprecedented challenges in 2020, many were hopeful that perhaps the turn of the calendar page to 2021 would signal a “return to normal” to how our lives were before the pandemic took hold.

As we now know all-too-well, that wasn’t to be as COVID challenges continue to plague the physical and mental health of all who are living through these difficult times.

In addition, our nation is also suffering with another killer, and that is the unimaginable increase in violent crime that we are seeing throughout the country.

And we have been hit especially hard here at home.

In 2021, Philadelphia experienced an unconscionable amount of shootings, homicides, and other violent crime–the frequency of which the city has never experienced before.

We refuse to accept this as normal.

While the increase of violent crime was often the focus of discussions surrounding public safety, there was plenty of great work that our patrol officers, investigators, forensics technicians, and organizational service members engaged in that led to significant reductions in crime and improved services to the community. These include our record number of crime gun confiscations and VUFA arrests, in addition to our enhanced partnerships with local, state, and federal agencies.

Over the last year, the PPD also improved upon the way we use forensic DNA techniques to solve crimes, and enhanced our responses to mental health deployments from start to finish.

There were many more accomplishments and goals that the Philadelphia Police Department reached in 2021:

The Philadelphia Police Department remains committed towards doing everything in our power to improve public safety in Philadelphia.
