By CBS3 StaffJanuary 8, 2022 at 8:14 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Multiple shootings Saturday night across Philadelphia left a 19-year-old dead and three other young people hurt, according to Philadelphia police. The shootings came after a East Germantown homicide that left a 17-year-old dead.
The first shooting happened in South Philadelphia in the 1800 block of McClellan Street. Police found two victims, 16- and 19-years-old around 5:15 p.m. The 19-year-old died after being shot in the ribs.
The 16-year-old was shot three times and is currently in stable condition.
In Kensington, a 17-year-old is in critical condition after a shooting around 6:37 p.m. The department said officers found him in the 2000 block of East Orleans Street after being shot in the back.

Around 7:53 p.m., Philadelphia officers responded to 9th Street and Lindley Avenue after a 19-year-old was shot once in the shoulder. He arrived at the hospital in a private vehicle. Investigators are still trying to find a crime scene.

The victim is in stable condition, officers said.

No arrests have been made in these shootings.

Carjackings Up Significantly In Philadelphia Compared To 2021; Residents In Fairmount Fear They’re Next Target

By Joe HoldenJanuary 13, 2022 at 6:01 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — It’s not just shootings on the rise in Philadelphia, so are carjackings. There have been 91 carjackings so far this year, compared to just 24 at the same time last year.
Philadelphia police have recovered a car that they saw was part of a foiled carjacking attempted Wednesday night. An off-duty Philadelphia police officer says the white Honda rear-ended his Chevy Malibu at Ogontz and Olney Avenues. He followed the car into Lower Merion.
Police later found the Honda and two suspects in Overbrook.
Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw spoke Thursday afternoon about the carjacking surge in Philly.
“Philadelphia has seen an increase in the number of carjackings taken place,” Outlaw said. “Unfortunately, this trend is not unique to Philadelphia. I know that those words bring little comfort right now to our community members, many of whom are experiencing fear and uncertainty, but I do hope that we will ease their fears. I do hope that they know and understand that the Philadelphia Police Department is actively working to identify and apprehend the individuals committing these crimes.”
The police commissioner says the department is deploying more resources to catch suspects and to prevent carjackings before they happen.
In the meantime, some are fearful and afraid they could be next.
“I love Fairmount, I want nothing more than to stay in Fairmount,” Laura Velasco said.
But Velasco isn’t so sure it’s the safest move. At least not since she says it seems her neighborhood is under siege by a ring of carjackers.
The startling reality for this mother.
“If it’s me getting carjacked, that’s fine, I hand over my keys,” she said. “I can’t have that happening to my son.”
Philadelphia has seen a tripling of carjackings in just the last few weeks compared to the same time last year.
Video from Fairmount shows one carjacking in broad daylight.
“If you look at the video, you can see that there are two people and they are just kind of waiting and they very calmly walk up to the car and they take it from the neighbor,” Velasco said.
Departure from the norm, what concerns neighbors as these carjackings are no longer happening in the middle of the night but at any time of day.
“Suddenly, I’m like, ‘oh, these carjackings are really getting close to home,’ and then two days later, there was one in broad daylight,” Velasco said, “and I’m like, ‘oh this is not just don’t be in your car at 11 o’clock at night.”
The unnerving crime motivated Velasco to email Philadelphia City Council President Darrell Clarke’s office.
She typed, “I now fear getting out of my car every day.”
A staff member responded noting their concerns and that police would be alerted.
Velasco also messaged me.
“Essentially, they said they’re taking some action, but they can’t really tell us what the action is, because it is — a police strategy,” Velasco said.
For now, Velasco says she and her husband keep their heads on a swivel, but her real fear is for her son.
“You get to your car door and you’re either getting in or getting out and someone comes and more than likely they will have a gun and they will point it at you,” she said, “which is my concern for my son. I don’t want a gun pointed at him.”
With these crimes on the rise, Philadelphia police want to make sure residents know how to stay safe. They say look at what they call hot spots for carjackings — any time you’re getting in and out of your car, in your driveway, or parking lots and garages, at gas stations and ATMs and on streets with poor lighting.
There are also two common scenarios to keep in mind. One is called “bump and run.” That’s when someone bumps into your car and when you get out to look at the damage, another person steals it, If you feel threatened, stay inside, drive somewhere safe and call 911.
Here’s another scenario. Criminals will also call for food deliveries. Then when the food gets there, they take the delivery driver’s car.
Here are some safety tips from the police. First, make it a habit to start your car and drive away immediately. You should also check around before getting in for any suspicious people or vehicles. Police suggest parking in well-lit areas and keeping your windows rolled up and doors locked.

Frankford High School Student Shot 3 Times On Way To School, Police Say

By CBS3 StaffJanuary 18, 2022 at 4:20 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — The search continues for a gunman who shot a Philadelphia high school student on his way to school on Tuesday.
A spokesperson for the Philadelphia School District says they were on their way to school when he was shot. The teenager was shot three times. He is in stable condition.
The shooting happened on the 1300 block of Fillmore Street, near Oakland Street. The location is near Frankford High School, where the 18-year-old is a student.

Police say the victim was shot in the back, arm and suffered a graze wound to his face.
A nearby house was also hit by bullets.
Eyewitness News spoke to a man who lives in the first-floor apartment. He was home at the time but wasn’t injured. He feared retaliation, so he wouldn’t speak on camera, but he said kids are typically rowdy in the neighborhood and that violence is getting worse there.
After a public records request, Philadelphia police say so far this year, 12 people under the age of 18 have been shot in the city. Last year at this time, that number was eight. Also, year to date there have been 120 shootings in the city. Last year at this time, there were 97. Those numbers include homicides. There have been at least 30 homicides in the city so far this year. That’s 36% higher than this time last year.
Last year, at least 562 people were killed in Philadelphia, which is the most on record.
Back to the shooting in Frankford, no arrests have been made.

Victim Shoots, Kills 1 Of 3 Suspects During Attempted Car Theft In Southwest Philly, Police Say

By CBS3 StaffJanuary 18, 2022 at 12:23 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A man accused of attempting to steal a car in Southwest Philadelphia was shot and killed by the car’s owner on Tuesday morning. Police say three men attempted to steal the car near South 58th Street and Cobbs Creek Parkway just before 8:30 a.m.
Witnesses say the suspects had the victim’s car hooked up with straps but didn’t get very far.
The victim, who police say appears to be licensed to carry, shot after the three men in the attempted robbery. As they took off in a Honda, they crashed into a school bus heading in the opposite direction.

One of the suspects, a 52-year-old man, was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
The victim was not injured.
Police are not yet clear on if this was a carjacking – or an attempted car theft and shooting – but these incidents have been on the minds of the public and police.
As of Friday, police said there have been at least 100 carjackings in Philadelphia since the start of the year. Commissioner Danielle Outlaw says the department has planned on deploying additional resources to combat carjackings, including launching a new operational task force dedicated solely to this issue.
This incident remains under investigation.

Carjackings In Philadelphia Have Nearly Tripled Since 2019; More Than 100 Already In 2022

By Alecia ReidJanuary 19, 2022 at 6:08 pm
Filed Under:Local TV, Philadelphia News

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Carjackings in Philadelphia have nearly tripled since 2019. Police officials say the rising number is troubling, particularly in the cold winter months where there’s usually a decrease in that type of crime.
It’s an alarming trend where would-be victims are fighting back. In one instance, shooting and killing a suspect attempting to carjack them.
Police promise to continue deploying officers to pinpoint locations where carjackings have increased substantially, while Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw says to be mindful of your surroundings.
“Carjackers have been utilizing a pump and run, where they initiate the carjacking by tapping your vehicle with their vehicle,” Outlaw said.
If that happens, you want to make sure to get to a location that has sufficient lighting. You can call 911 or drive to the nearest police station. Police officials say delivery drivers have also become targets.
“We believe they set those food deliveries up and when that person arrives, that’s the car they’re gonna take. We also know it’s not one type of car, it’s the full gamut of vehicles,” Philadelphia Police Deputy Commissioner Ben Naish said.
Police statistics show between 2010-2019, there was an average of 230 carjackings each year in the city. The number jumped to 409 in 2020 and topped off with 757 in 2021.
So far this year, there have been over 100 carjackings and we’re still in the month of January.
Another worry, of the 226 illegal guns recovered so far this year, 21 have been ghost guns — some of which police say were involved in carjackings.
“Beware of your surroundings, suspicious persons or vehicles, and trust your instincts. I encourage all drivers to keep their phones on their person in case an emergency arises. And please do not get involved in an altercation with these suspects. Your life is far more important than your vehicle so be a good witness,” Outlaw said.
While responding to the increased number of carjackings, Commissioner Outlaw says the department is also addressing ongoing staffing shortages and bolstering their detective unit.

By CBS3 StaffJanuary 19, 2022 at 4:21 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Police have arrested a Philadelphia man on Wednesday who shot a thief that tried to steal his car. Steven Thompson has been charged with not having a license for his gun after he shot and killed a man for attempting to steal his car in Southwest Philadelphia on Tuesday.
The incident happened on 58th Street and Cobbs Creek Parkway early Tuesday morning.
Investigators say the suspect died after he drove away from the scene in his own car, and crashed into a school bus. Police say the incident was an attempted theft of the vehicle or attempted theft of a catalytic converter.
Thompson was not injured during the incident.

Philadelphia Continues To See Surge In Carjackings, Authorities Believe Social Media May Be To Blame

By Alecia ReidFebruary 2, 2022 at 5:30 pm

PHILADELPHIA. (CBS) – Philadelphia continues to see a surge in carjackings in the city. On Wednesday, officials provided an update on their efforts to get a hold of the problem. Philadelphia police believe it’s a small group of criminals that are responsible for the majority of carjackings in the city, and they say social media is a driving force.
The rash of carjackings in Philadelphia is on the rise. Police and their partner agencies are tracking them closely.
“The FBI, ATF – Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms – but we also have the Pennsylvania State Police is joining our collaboration and so is the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office,” Philadelphia Police Deputy Commissioner Ben Naish said.
Officials are making it clear: carjackings is a national trend, and Philly isn’t exempt.
Police tell Eyewitness News there have been 134 carjackings so far this year, and another 20 attempted. They are making leeway with 31 arrests, eight of them within the last week.
“Three of the suspects were driving vehicles that were taken during carjackings, at the time of the arrests those suspects’ ages range from 14 to 24,” Naish said.
On Monday, Chopper 3 captured a wild pursuit of a carjacker in Northeast Philly.
The department says pursuits can be extremely dangerous and may put members of the public in danger. That’s one of the main reasons police don’t conduct chases in the city. Instead, Philadelphia police say they are using other investigative techniques to identify offenders.
“The helicopter allows our folks to stay back a little bit further without driving at whatever crazy speed the offender is driving and know where the vehicle is,” Naish said.
With the age group of suspects ranging from 14 to 24, police say carjackings are being glorified on social media.
“Some carjackings that are getting social media attention are leading to other carjackings and that’s predominantly where a lot of juveniles are coming into play. We think they have been making somewhat of a spectacle or game at keeping score outta something like this,” Naish said.
Philadelphia police say they believe their efforts could help them to soon see a decrease in carjackings across the city. They promised an update on those efforts by the end of the month.

His Name is George Briscella: 60-Year-Old White Philadelphian Killed By Three Black Male Carjackers

In 2021 Philadelphia, 95 percent of the shooting victims were non-white. The 2020 Census shows Philadelphia to be a 34 percent white city.
Unfortunately, George Briscella, a 60-year-old white man—a father of four and grandfather of six—found out the hard way what this means. While visiting his mother in a nearly 65 percent white community within Philadelphia, Briscella would be the fatal victim of a car-jacking.
Or what the police dubbed a “crime of opportunity.” The aggressors were three black males.
This didn’t need to happen’: Grandfather, military vet killed in Philadelphia carjacking, Fox 29, February 7, 2022
PHILADELPHIA- A Philadelphia grandfather and military veteran was gunned down Sunday night during a carjacking outside his mother’s house in Rhawnhurst.
According to the Philadelphia Police Department, 60-year-old George Briscella was visiting his mother at her house on the 2100 block of Afton Street around 8 p.m.
Video surveillance footage shows Briscella walking towards a 2020 Toyota Rav4 parked in the driveway when three unknown suspects approach him a minute later.
Soon after, police say three shots were fired from an AR-15 style rifle and one hit Briscella on the right side of the abdomen. He was taken to Jefferson-Torresdale Hospital where he died.
The Rav4 was last spotted heading towards Large Street and has a temporary license plate tag of last 514-67PD.
Philadelphia Police Homicide Detective Jason Smith called the deadly carjacking “a crime of opportunity.”

Investigators believe the three suspects could be linked to other carjackings.
“Total disregard for human life, a great human life,” Tony Briscella said of his father’s killing.
“This didn’t need to happen in a city that we all grew up in and loved, and it continues to deteriorate.”
Why does it deteriorate? Because the civilization white people built in Philadelphia is being replaced by the conditions non-whites uniquely create in a space once inhabited by whites. What white people created long ago—the infrastructure of the city—remains, but the quality of life white individuals collectively created is replaced by what they decided to escape via white flight.
Recall, 95 percent of shooting victims in 2021 Philadelphia were non-white. Odds are 98 percent (or greater) of the suspects were non-white, too.
His Name is George Briscella.

4 People, Including Teen Girl, Caught In Middle Of Gun Battle Outside Of East Germantown Rite Aid

By Siafa LewisFebruary 17, 2022 at 10:08 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Four people, including a teenage girl, were out shopping Thursday afternoon when they found themselves in the middle of a gun battle outside of a pharmacy in East Germantown.
It happened shortly before 4:30 p.m. on the 100 block of West Chelten Avenue.
Chopper 3 was live over the scene.

The incident was just one in a number of shootings around Philadelphia on Thursday. It involved two males between the ages of 15 and 20 shooting at one another on a busy East Germantown street.
Police don’t know what led to the shooting, but the end results affected only the innocent in the neighborhood.
“As they’re shooting each other in this business district, which is a very crowded area, there’s four people, innocent victims who get hit by gunfire,” Philadelphia Police Capt. John Walker said. “They range from ages 16 to 67.”
Three of the injured were women. The other was a man. All are in the hospital in critical but stable condition.
“You’ve got four innocent people shopping, enjoying the day and now sitting in the hospital,” Walker said. “We need the community to come forward here. It’s no secret these kids are probably from the area here, people know what happened here and do the right thing and bring these kids forward. Get them off the street.”
Another byproduct of the shooting? Early store closures, like that of the Rite Aid which the shooting happened in front of — a steady stream of disappointed would-be customers, had to be turned away.
“These communities rely on these businesses,” Walker said. “With them closing, it creates a problem for everybody. So not only do you have a shooting here, but you have a silencing of a business district.”
Eyewitness News also found one man who just opened his food cart next to the Rite Aid a few months ago.
“I started a new business and this is what happened now. It happened twice, two weeks in a row,” Najibullah Kan said. “Last week there was a shooting and this week again.”
No arrests have been made.
Police say they’re looking at the surveillance video in the area to try and learn the identity of the two young shooters. They made a plea to members in the community — if anyone knows anything to come forward.

Exclusive: Some Vehicles Carjacked In Philadelphia Exported As Far Away As Africa, Sources Say

By Joe HoldenFebruary 22, 2022 at 9:41 am

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Philadelphia’s carjacking crisis is not easing up. Some of the stolen cars will never be recovered. Eyewitness News has exclusive new details on what’s happening to these vehicles.
Philadelphia police say there will be a significant news conference Tuesday, which will include the mayor, police commissioner and many more, to discuss carjackings in the city.

Law enforcement sources tell CBS3 they’ve traced some carjacked vehicles to shipping ports in Newark, New Jersey, and Wilmington, Delaware, where those stolen cars are then exported out of the country.
Sources say some of the vehicles taken at gunpoint off city streets ended up in Africa.
Philadelphia Police declined requests to talk on camera about the development.
Several sources providing information for this report on the condition of anonymity confirm an organized ring of carjacking thieves is operating across the city.

At least two people have been fatally shot during robbery and carjacking attempts, including George Briscella two weeks ago in North Philadelphia.
The escalation of deadly violence connected to the city’s out-of-control carjacking crisis has set off alarms. Councilman Kenyatta Johnson has called for a town hall Tuesday night to confront the issue.
“A lot of people just don’t feel safe getting into their car and getting out of their car and so we want to have an overview from the Philadelphia Police Department on how people can feel safe going to and from home. And for me, that’s very, very important,” Johnson said.
Police say they will be focusing on two specific homicide cases as it relates to carjackings in the city. The first, the case of Briscilla, and a second shooting that happened at 81 Grovers Ave. two weeks ago.

Union Advising SEPTA Operators To Ignore Fare Beaters After Bus Driver Assaulted, Spit On

By Alecia ReidMarch 2, 2022 at 5:43 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Front-line SEPTA workers are fed up. They say their safety is at risk and they’re no longer going after fare evaders.
Some workers say it’s just not worth it and their union is backing them after a bus driver who was recently spat on was fired.
Fare evasion on SEPTA isn’t exactly shocking news, but the Transit Workers Union is now advising front-line operators to just ignore fare beaters. They say it’s a matter of safety.
SEPTA is down one operator after a recent altercation on one of their buses.
“This passenger walks up to the front, he begins to verbally assault and then physically assault the bus operator,” TWU Local 234 President Brian Pollitt said.
Pollitt says this all stemmed from the operator following SEPTA’s “check and request” protocol where a driver will request a passenger’s payment if they notice they haven’t paid.
“He dropped his mask down and spit on the bus operator,” Pollitt said.
The driver retaliated and has since been fired.
“I’m asking my members to sit in that seat and if they refuse to pay, be quiet and let them ride because we have no protections,” Pollitt said.
For some, like John Crowder, on a fixed income, he doesn’t always have a fare.
“I’ll ask the bus driver. Some people get on so disrespectful, it’s ridiculous,” Crowder said.
Passengers say it’s normal to see disputes between commuters and operators.
“The bus driver did what he needed to do. He should get his job back,” Talbert Hill-El said.
“I think he has a right to be upset. I think they both was in the wrong but it happens,” Ellesha Shahid said.
A rep from SEPTA says they offer ongoing de-escalation training for operators and are very clear about moving on if someone refuses to pay.
“If someone becomes confrontational with a bus operator they can call their dispatcher to have police come out or a supervisor to come out,” SEPTA spokesperson Andrew Busch said.
The union president says this wasn’t the first time someone spit in that operator’s face, and that SEPTA used that against him.
Meanwhile, the agency says it’s important for operators to record the fare evasion so SEPTA management can continue to track the number of daily offenses.

Group Of Temple University Parents Hire Private Security To Patrol Near Campus Due To Gun Violence Concerns

By Matt PetrilloMarch 9, 2022 at 2:46 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Gun violence concerns have extended to Philadelphia’’s college campuses. Parents who send their kids to college may expect to help them with tuition, books, and rent. But a group of Temple University parents are now paying for their children’s private security.
Private security isn’t cheap. The mother who organized the private security at Temple says it’s costing more than $1,000 a month.
“My husband and I put our heads together and thought what could we do right now,” Jennifer Hedberg, the mother of a Temple student, said.
Hedberg of Massachusetts sent her son to Temple to study industrial systems engineering.

But she says fears of her son’s safety have grown since another student, Sam Collington, was shot and killed near campus last year.
“He had definitely felt an increase in anxiety and stress about safety,” she said.
So, she and a small group of parents have now hired JNS Protection Services. The private security company now patrols by car and by foot five days a week, through the end of the semester.
If there’s an issue, Temple Police is called.
“We’re there to help,” Jasmine Jackson, the CEO of LNS Protection services, said. “Were there to work together with them so that crime can cease.”
JNS’ patrol area stretches from Diamond to Berks Streets, between 15th and 19th Streets. Temple’s own campus safety patrols most of the same area as well.

And Temple is also working to hire more officers, but parents like Hedberg didn’t want to wait.
“They are hiring, they’re vetting they’re training these new candidates, but we have the need right now,” she said.
The Temple mom who initiated hiring the private security says she has about 10 parents pitching in to pay for it.

Rash Of Shootings Across Philadelphia Tuesday Night As Activists Fear Increased Violence With Warm Weather

By Alicia Roberts
March 16, 2022 at 8:54 am

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — It has been a violent night across the city of Philadelphia. There has been a rash of shootings Tuesday night, including one in Olney where police say three men were shot during a birthday party.
It happened in the 4800 block of Lawrence Street around 8 p.m. Police say two of the victims are in critical condition, the other is stable.
No arrests have been made.
Unfortunately, is it not uncommon to see more shootings on a nice night like Tuesday when more people are out with the warmer weather. A local mom and activist who lost two sons of her own fears we’re just getting started for a very violent spring and summer.
A 30-year-old man was shot multiple times in the chest while holding a baby in a car seat. It happened around 7 p.m. Tuesday on Foulkrod Street in Frankford.
The baby was not hurt, but the man died from his injuries at Temple University Hospital. Police identified the man as Stephen Houston of Philadelphia.
Hours before, police responded to a triple shooting on Page Street in Strawberry Mansion, where two males — ages 17 and 18 — were shot in the arm and leg. A 21-year-old female, an innocent bystander, was caught in the crossfire as she was walking into a house with a friend. She was shot in the arm.
“People are getting shot every day who the bullets aren’t intended for,” said Movita Johnson-Harrell, founder of the Charles Foundation.
Johnson-Harrell has lost two sons to gun violence — both unintended victims — including her oldest Donte just last March.
With Philadelphia on pace for another record year of homicides, she fears more mothers will be left to bury their children.
“We have a shortage of police, sadly. We have so many guns on the street, we have kids that have easy accessibility to guns with no conflict resolution skills and they are solving their problems with guns. Then it really is going to get worse before it gets better because people are going to continue to die as the temperature continues to go up,” Johnson-Harrell said.
She’s urging all parents to talk to their children about safety and be proactive in getting guns off our streets.
The city will hold its weekly crime briefing Wednesday at 1 p.m. We will stream it live on CBS News Philly.

By CBS3 StaffApril 15, 2022 at 11:05 am

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — The gun violence that occurred in Philadelphia on Thursday continued into Friday. Several shootings left at least four people dead and 15 others injured.
The latest victim was a 31-year-old man who was killed early Friday morning after nearly 20 shots were fired at a car in West Philadelphia, police say. It happened along Redfield Street.
Police say 18 shots were fired from two separate guns. The victim was taken to Children’s Hospital, where he later died. Nearby homes and cars were also struck, but police say no one else was injured.
Two men were killed in Southwest Philadelphia late Thursday night. Police say they found two 32-year-old men shot multiple times on 67th Street and Greenway Avenue. Emergency crews rushed them to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where they both died.
“Thirteen spent shell casings are very close to, just a few feet away from where both of the victims had collapsed, and where both of the victims were picked up by police,” Chief Inspector Scott Small said. “So that appears that the shooter, or shooters were standing very, very close to these victims when the shots were fired.”
Officers are combing through surveillance footage trying to narrow down their search for a suspect.
Police say a man was left critically injured after he was ambushed by at least two gunmen in West Philadelphia.
A 33-year-old woman is fighting for her life. Police say she was a passenger in a van that was shot multiple times just after 6 p.m.
The 37-year-old male driver was also shot. He is in stable condition.

Police say 18 shots were fired from 2 separate guns. Nearby homes and cars were also struck, but police say no one else was injured. The victim was 31-years-old. Police are now looking for the person who drove the victim to CHOP.
‘The person that drove the victim to the hospital in that shot-up Kia fled the scene, so we’re holding the vehicle at CHOP as a crime scene but we don’t have the individual that drove that vehicle,” Chief Inspector Scott Small said.
Police tell Eyewitness News the 31-year-old was one of five people shot and killed in the city since Thursday morning.
Two men in Southwest Philadelphia are among the victims who lost their lives. Just after 10 p.m. Thursday, police say they found the two 32-year-old men shot multiple times on 67th Street and Greenway Avenue. Emergency crews rushed them to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where both men died.

“We found 13 spent shell casings, so we know 13 shots were fired from a semi-automatic weapon,” Small said. “The 13 spent shell casings are very close to, just a few feet away from where both of the victims had collapsed.”
The fourth fatal shooting happened on Manton Street in Queen Village Thursday afternoon.
No arrests have been made in any of these deadly shootings.
Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney released a statement about the overnight gun violence on Friday.
“The outrageous levels of violent incidents over the past 24 hours in our city is devastating. The surge in gun violence that we’ve seen across the nation—and here in Philadelphia—makes me not just heartbroken, but angry. My deepest sympathies go out to the loved ones of those affected by violence. These senseless shootings must stop, and must stop now.
“I can’t reinforce enough how tragic and needless this loss of life is. Our administration, in partnership with all of our local and federal law enforcement agencies, continues to work relentlessly to reduce violence and create safer communities and a more just city for everyone. Our commitment to solving this crisis is demonstrated by the expansion in violence prevention funding proposed in our latest FY23 Budget, where we plan to invest more than $184 million to make our communities safer. We will continue to do everything we can to protect Philadelphians.
“Until we address the availability and ease of access to firearms, we will always be fighting an uphill battle. The Police Department is investigating these crimes and they continue to take a record number of illegal firearms off our streets, but they need the public’s help to solve crimes. I urge anyone with information about heinous acts of violence to report it anonymously to 215-686-TIPS so we can prevent the senseless shootings that are tearing our communities apart.”
“I also want to remind people that the City’s new 2-1-1 violence prevention hotline, a resource hub and preventative tool, can connect residents to violence prevention services and programs available in our communities—especially for those most highly at risk of engaging in gun violence or are looking for a way out of that life. Callers can reach the hotline by dialing 2-1-1 and then pressing 3 to be put in touch with a Resource Navigator.”
