2-Year-Old Dies After Being Neglected for Three Days, Mother Arrested

By Janita Kan

A woman from Charleston, Illinois, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder after her 2-year-old son was found unresponsive at their home on Monday, Dec. 4.

Savannah M. Weiss, 22, was arrested on Dec. 6 after she admitted to police that she left her toddler unattended in a portable playpen for three days, according to a Charleston Police Department news statement.

Authorities responded to a call of an unresponsive child at 1052 1st Street just before 9 a.m. on Monday. Upon arriving at the scene, paramedics declared the child dead.

An autopsy conducted at the Champaign County Coroner’s Office revealed that the preliminary cause of death was dehydration and malnutrition, according to the statement.

Upon investigation, authorities found the residence to be full of garbage and debris as well as animal feces, an attorney for the case told reporters at a press conference on Dec. 7. The child’s playpen was also dirty and filled with food debris, the attorney said at the press conference.

The 22-year-old left her home at approximately 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 1 and returned at about 6 pm. on Sunday, Dec. 3. During this time, her son was left unattended in the playpen with only two peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and a vitamin bottle with a needle sized hole poked into the cap, according to the attorney.

Weiss is expected to appear in court on Dec. 11.

March 10, 2018 at 9:55 pm

CAMDEN, NJ (CBS) — Police have arrested and charged a woman in New Jersey for allegedly kidnapping an infant she was babysitting.

Officials say the four-month-old’s mother attempted to pick up the child at a home along 33rd Street in Camden on Friday.

According to police, the child’s mother reported the infant missing when she couldn’t contact the babysitter, 22-year-old Nadajia Hill, of Camden.

Detectives say after Hill had assumed care of the child, Friday night, she had taken him to Newark on public transportation.

Hill and the infant were then determined to be on a southbound New Jersey Transit RiverLine train Saturday.

Police say just after 12:30 p.m. officers located both Hill and the child on the train when it stopped in Riverside.

The child was said to have been found in good health and was returned to his family.

Hill is now facing both Kidnapping and Child Endangerment charges and has been remanded to the Camden County Jail.

“We would like to thank all of the partner agencies that immediately responded helped ensure that this infant was located unharmed and safely returned to his family,” said Chief J. Scott Thomson. “This includes the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office, New Jersey State Police, New Jersey Transit Police, Newark Police, New Jersey Department of Child Protection & Permanency and the Delran Emergency Squad, all of whom helped ensure the best possible outcome for this case.”

Disturbing video of baby crawling alone in street leads to mom’s arrest

A disturbing video that showed a baby crawling alone after dark on a road in upstate New York led to the arrest of the mother, police said.

Ledrika E. Ford, 27, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child after her 9-month-old was discovered by strangers in the street unattended, according to Utica Police Department.

Police said they became aware of a video on Facebook Friday night that captured several people rushing to the aid of the abandoned infant.

“That’s what people do now? Leaving their kids in the street?” an incredulous good Samaritan can be heard saying in the video, which ends with a woman frantically shouting, “That’s my baby.”

Officers were able to track down the 27-year-old mom — identified as Ford — who claimed that she didn’t know how the baby ended up in the street.

Ford told police that she and a relative buckled the baby into the back seat of a car, started driving and soon realized the child was no longer in the vehicle.

She said they returned to where they were initially parked and found the 9-month-old.

Authorities notified Child Protective Services which removed four kids from Ford’s custody.

In a statement, police thanked those who rushed to help the child.

“The Utica Police Department would like to thank the citizens in the video who attended to the child showing their caring and compassionate spirit of the City of Utica,” authorities said.

A panicked Brooklyn mom walked into an NYPD station house to say her two young kids were missing — but an officer blew her off and refused to take a report, sources told The Post.

It turned out that the kids really had wandered off — making it to Midtown Manhattan before they were found — and Officer Angelo Rossignolo of the 73rd Precinct was placed on modified duty for failure to take police action on a missing persons case, according to the sources.

Around 8 a.m. Wednesday, 12-year-old Lala Washington and her 9-year-old brother, Andrew Hillard, left their family’s Brownsville home on Amboy Street to go to a free food program across the street, cops said.

When the youngsters didn’t return home, their worried mother went out looking for them before going to the stationhouse at around 1 p.m., sources said.

While at the precinct, Rossignolo told the mother he couldn’t take a missing persons report and advised that she wait awhile, according to sources.

“Go home and call 911,” the 7-year officer told the mother, one source said.

The next morning, the NYPD released photos of the children and descriptions of them as the department asked for the public’s help in locating the kids.

The children, cops say, were later found Thursday at a Starbucks on West 49th Street in Midtown — roughly 13 miles away.

Meanwhile, several NYPD officers and a worker for the city’s Administration for Children’s Services attempted to check on the fambly Friday.

“ACS tried to do a wellness check, but we couldn’t get in,” one of the officers told a Post reporter.

ACS spokeswoman Chanel Caraway said: “Our top priority is protecting the safety and well-being of all chilluns in New York City. We are investigating this case with the NYPD.”

Rossignolo, who joined the force in 2011, raked in a total pay of $102,228 last year, according to data posted by SeeThroughNY.

He could not be reached for comment. A rep for the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association declined to comment.

COLERAIN TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) -

Police say a Mount Airy woman was busted for shoplifting from a Kroger -- but it's what she left behind that has some scratching their heads.

Authorities say the crime took place in the 6400 block of Colerain Avenue. Police say Lanise Lindsey, 27, was caught by the Kroger loss prevention team stealing and placing items under her purse.

She is accused of doing all of this while her two children were nearby.

A Kroger employee said once she was busted in the parking lot, they told her to go back into the store, which she did. Police said she took the stolen items out of her purse and took off running. According to court documents, she left her two children in the store.

The court records do not list a motive for the alleged theft or why she chose to leave her children in the store. It's unclear who has the children at this point.

A baby boy was found crawling across a busy New Jersey street over the weekend after an older brother or sibling possibly left a door open, authorities say.

A passing driver, 41-year-old Cory Cannon of Eatontown, says he saw the 10-month-old boy on Joe Parker Road around 5 p.m. Saturday in Lakewood.

Cannon said he initially thought he was a toy. But when he saw the child moving, he got out of his car to stop traffic.

"I was in complete shock when I saw it," Cannon said. The baby just sat in the middle of the street and looked at him, he added -- so he tried talking to him.

At that same time, a neighbor got the baby and returned the child to his home. It wasn't clear how he ended up on the roadway, but police say the boy's family didn't even know he was gone until the neighbor returned him.

"I don't look at myself as a hero," Cannon said. "I just look at myself as somebody who just did the right thing for a child."

The investigation is ongoing.

A mother accused of leaving her child alone to go on a date must now take parenting classes.

A judge gave that bond condition to 25-year-old India Hunter.

Court documents say on September 30 her 9-year-old boy was found wandering alone at a gas station on Hollow Tree Lane in north Harris County at about 4 a.m.

When deputies approached the child, the boy said his mom was out with her boyfriend.

In court documents, a Harris County Sheriff's deputy said the area where the boy was found alone is a dangerous place, with many violent crime calls.
