Unidentified man tries to lure young Comanche girls to truck

Posted: Dec 20, 2007 05:32 PM CST

Lawton_A Stephens County town is on edge following two possible child abduction attempts. Police say the first report came in last week after a man driving a green pickup tried to get two elementary school girls to come to him. The latest attempt happened this week when a man driving a pickup matching the same description followed a 12 year old girl to her home. Police say they don't have any leads at this time, just a description of both the man and his vehicle. Until they find him, police and school administrators want to make sure parents and community members are on alert.

Thursday is the last day of classes for Comanche students as they begin their holiday break. With warmer temperatures, a lot of youngsters may enjoy their time off outdoors. Normally that's not a worry, but with a possible abductor lurking around town, its a whole different story. "We're really concerned," says Comanche High School Principal Steven Dunham. "We've got emails out to the teachers - the community is finding out about it. We've got everybody in town pretty vigilant keeping an eye on these kids."

It all started last week when two little girls were walking home from the school bus stop. That's when the Chief says they spotted a green pickup. "The pickup stopped and the person got out and he wanted them to come over to his vehicle, and they did real well they ran away from him," says Chief Mike Jones. Even after the girls say the man stomped his foot and ordered them to come.

On Tuesday of this week, police believe the man struck again when he followed a girl to her home. She, too, ran to safety. "Pickup description was the same and the individual description was the same," says Jones. "Our red flag was raised anyway, but this kind of kicked it up a notch."

The Highway Patrol and the Stephens County Sheriff's Department have joined the search as well. "You like to think nothing like that could happen around here, but we've found over the years that small towns are not immune to these kind of people," Jones says. "If this individual leaves Comanche, he may go to another place close by."

Chief Jones says there are several green pickups in Comanche but it's possible the man is not from the town. The girls tell investigators the truck is possibly a late 90's model Chevy with a black horizontal stripe on the tailgate. Police are looking for tag information or other unique features on the vehicle.

Police say the man behind the wheel is a heavyset middle aged Hispanic man with a white or blond stripe on the front of his hair. If you see him or the pickup, call police.

Wetback Tries to Abduct Young Girl

A 13-year-old Canyon Country student is safe after a man apparently tried to abduct her while she walked home from school Wednesday.

The incident reportedly happened around 4:15 p.m., shortly after the La Mesa Junior High School student got off the school bus. She was walking north on Sierra Highway near Adon Avenue in Canyon Country when she heard a man call her from a white van, according to a sheriff’s report.

When she looked back, the van was reportedly stopped and the man was standing outside the van. The girl began to run toward home, but the van then pulled into a driveway in front of her, blocking her path.

The girl then turned back around and sought refuge at the TravelLodge hotel office at 17843 W. Sierra Highway, according to the report. She told the staff what was going on, and they provided a safe ride home for her.

The suspect was described as a Hispanic man in his mid-30s with a dark complexion, wearing a white T-shirt and blue pants. There was no additional information on the van.

Suspect sought in sexual assault

ONTARIO - Police were looking for a man wanted in connection with the sexual assault of a 6-year-old girl lured from her apartment courtyard to a gray sedan.

"This could be categorized as a parent's worst nightmare," said Ontario police Sgt. Robert Freire. "It's why we talk to kids about speaking to strangers because things in fact do happen."

The incident occurred about 8 p.m. Thursday in the 300 block of North San Antonio Avenue, according to a police news release.

Officers responded after the girl arrived home and told her mother what happened, according to the release.

The girl, who police said was shaken and hysterical, said she was in the complex's courtyard playing with a 9-year-old girl neighbor.

The release described the suspect as a 5-foot-6 Latrino between the ages of 38 and 45 with a light complexion who wore a gray hooded sweatshirt. The release also stated that he lured the girl to a small, gray four-door sedan, telling her that he had a skateboard she could play with.

Police said she got in the sedan, which was parked in the rear parking lot of the apartment complex.

The man, who only spoke Spanish to the girl, then drove her away, police said.

The girl said the man drove her to a dark residential street, parked the car by the curb and sexually assaulted her.

The man then dropped her off at a fast-food restaurant close to her apartment complex.

Police believe she had been gone for about 50 minutes.

The complex is "completely open," Freire said, and people can easily get inside through a main walkway or a driveway.

The mother of the 6-year-old was in her apartment and the child's father was at work, Freire said.

Freire said he could understand how children playing in a courtyard of an apartment complex at nightfall would be odd.

"But in some neighborhoods, with small apartments, the parents are OK, and it's not unusual at all," Freire said.

The girl was taken to San Antonio Community Hospital in Upland and was treated. Police said she was at home in good condition.

Police said the girl's playmate went home after the girl went with the man, Freire said.

"A 9-year-old, I think personally, should have the capacity to see something wrong in this individual incident," Freire said. "Why she didn't, I don't know."

Ontario police detectives searched the neighborhood for potential evidence or witnesses.

Freire said he did not believe the crime is linked to any other after speaking with members of Ontario police's sex crimes unit.

"In the last year, I have not heard of anything like this happening in our city and the surrounding cities," Freire said.

Man found in bedroom of 8-year-old girl

Terrifying - that's how a mother describes the moment she walked in and saw a stranger kneeling next to her daughter's bed.

Even more terrifying is the possible link between the mystery man and an attempted kidnapping near a school that happened less than a month ago, along Park Lane, near Burnet Elementary in Dallas.

The most recent incident happened along Harvest Hill Road at an apartment complex.

Avonda Harris thought it was unusual her 8-year-old daughter's bedroom door was closed, as she always sleeps with it open.

"I could tell it was barricaded with a toy and I reached and turned on the light real quick."

She was terrified by what she saw. A man kneeling next to her 8-year-old daughter's bed.

"I screamed so loud, I could hardly get it out. It finally came out and he just dashed out the window," she said.

Harris believes the man came in through a window and has no idea how long he'd been in the room.

Her daughter says he touched her arm and leg. Police do not believe she was sexually assaulted.

"She said he said to her 'I love you and stay asleep.'"

The description she gives is almost identical to suspect in an attempted kidnapping last month, near Burnet Elementary.

In that case, the man grabbed an 8-year-old girl and tried to drag her off. Now, Harris believes this man has been stalking her daughter and possibly other children.

"To be honest, I think he's been here before but I can't prove it," she said.

Harris says her child no longer feels safe even in her own bedroom.

"She won't go into her room and won't even go in her room to get dressed."

The man is described as Hispanic - 25 to 30 years old, 5 feet 9 inches, weighing about 140 pounds. He's got a light complexion.

Northwest patrol has already asked for more officers in the area to be on the look out for the suspect.

Durham, N.C. — Durham police are investigating two reports that an 11-year-old was the victim of attempted kidnappings.

Both reported attempts happened in the past week – one last week and one Tuesday morning – near Landon and Hardee streets at about 7:30 a.m. while the child was going to school, police said.

In both attempts, a man driving a bright red car pulled up to the girl and told her to get in the car with him, police said. The girl refused and ran away.

Police say the car is a compact with a blue vanity plate on the front that says “Fear This." The car has a North Carolina license plate with a possible registration of VMF-7910.

The man police are looking for is described as a Hispanic with a dark complexion and a thin build. He had no facial hair and he spoke to the girl in Spanish, police said. He appeared to be coming from the Cheek Road area.

Fredy Humberto Pacheco

Durham, N.C. — A man charged in connection with three reports of attempted kidnappings was ordered held on a $1.25 million bond Thursday.

Fredy Humberto Pacheco, 36, of 901 Chalk Level Road, surrendered to Durham police Wednesday and was charged with two charges of attempted kidnapping and resisting, delaying and obstructing an officer.

Prosecutors said Pacheco hasn't cooperated with investigators, and they said he presented a danger to the community and a flight risk. Prosecutors asked for a $5 million bond, but a judge raised it from $250,000 to $1.25 million.

An 11-year-old girl reported she was the victim of two attempts – occurring last week and Tuesday morning – near Landon and Hardee streets while she was going to school, police said.

In both attempts, a man driving a bright red car pulled up to the girl and told her to get in the vehicle with him, police said. The girl refused and ran away. She told police that the attempted abductor's car had a decorative plate on the front that read “Fear This.”

Investigators said another girl came forward describing a similar experience Tuesday afternoon.
Investigators recovered a car Tuesday at a shopping center near Miami Boulevard and Holloway Street and identified it as the vehicle described in all three cases.

The mother of one the girls said after Thursday's court hearing that she hopes Pacheco doesn't post bond.
"He made our lives difficult," the woman said, noting her daughter has nightmares and doesn't want to be left alone.
After court Thursday, a woman claiming to be Pacheco's sister said he has lived with her for the past seven years and that he is a "good person."

Durham officials said they have been getting calls from other jurisdictions about Pacheco.
Authorities were checking his status with INS. Pacheco's next court appearance is scheduled for March 6.

Child Defends Herself Against Attacker in Baldwin Park

886836.jpg

Baldwin Park, CA (CNS) -- A 16-year-old girl used a ball point pen to stab a man in his face when he grabbed her as she walked home from school in Baldwin Park, and police believe the same man has targeted children twice before, authorities said today.

The latest incident occurred near the 13400 block of Dalewood Street around 11:50 a.m. on March 3, when a man in his 40s jumped out from between two vehicles and grabbed the arm of the teenager walking home from school, Baldwin Park police Lt. David Reynoso said.

The girl freed herself by stabbing the man in the face with a ball point pen, he said.

Following the attack, the victim helped investigators develop a composite sketch of her assailant, and police believe the suspect fits the description of the perpetrator in two incidents that occurred in February involving children, Reynoso said.

Around noon on Feb. 7, a 12-year-old boy was walking home from school in the 14200 block of Merced Avenue near Baldwin Park Boulevard when he noticed a man was following him, police said.

The boy ran toward a group of children also walking home and lost track of the suspect, Reynoso said. Once at home, the boy heard the doorbell and saw the same man at his door, but he left when the door was not opened, he said.

On the morning of Feb. 25, a 12-year-old girl was on the 4700 block of Larry Avenue on her way to school when a man hiding behind a parked van jumped out and grabbed her arm, police said. The assailant released the victim when she tried to bite his arm and ran home, where she told her parents what had happened and police were notified.

The man in these attacks is described as Hispanic, 5 feet 8 inches tall, with a medium build and an unshaven face. His hair is balding at the top and short on the sides. He was last seen wearing a long-sleeved red plaid shirt and blue jeans torn at the knees.
