Niglet left at Chuck E. Cheese, parents don't notice

Girl left at restaurant to stay with relative

FORT WORTH — A two-year-old girl left behind at a Chuck E. Cheese restaurant in Fort Worth over the weekend will not go home to her parents; instead, she will remain with a relative.

A judge on Friday awarded temporary custody of Almedia James to her paternal great aunt. The case will be revisited in the next 30 to 60 days and Almedia's parents will have supervised contact with her during this time.

The girl, called "Mimi" by relatives, had been found unaccompanied Jan. 5 [Saturday] in the 4800 block of S.W. Loop 820. She was turned over to Child Protective Services when no one returned to the restaurant to retrieve her.

Father of abandoned girl fights for child's return

Almedia James, 2, was left behind after she went with her parents said she was taken to the restaurant on Hulen Street in Fort Worth to attend a cousin's birthday party. Police only knew her as "Mimi," until her father came forward after they released a picture of the child and asked the public's help to identify her.

Now, Almedia's parents said they just want their child, who is still in Child Protective Services custody, back home.

"I want my baby real bad," said Brandon James, her father. "I want my baby real bad, you know."

Mr. James described the incident as a misunderstanding. He said he thought Mimi was with an aunt, who he said thought the two-year-old had gone home with another aunt after the party.

"I really don't even know what happened," he said. "I know it wasn't purposely done. I know it was an accident. I ain't faulting nobody for it. "

The father of three said he supports his family by working the overnight shifts at a fast food restaurant, which was where he said he worked all the weekend Mimi was left at Chuck-E-Cheese. On Monday, Mr. James said he started asking questions.

"When I went over there, there wasn't nobody there," he said. "My momma said she didn't hear. I called my sister; her phone didn't answer."

Part of the delay in reporting the child missing, James said, was that the family does not have a home phone.

Missing 4-Year-Old Returns With Unidentified 1-Year-Old

POSTED: 5:38 pm EST January 18, 2008
UPDATED: 6:11 pm EST January 18, 2008

Police in Darby Borough are trying to locate and identify the parents of a 1-year-old girl. The baby was found when police responded to a call about another missing 4-year-old child.

NBC 10's Lynn Berry said the case was originally a case of missing 4-year-old Danasiah Williams, who was last seen at 10 a.m. Thursday leaving the house with her cousin, April Diaz, also known as April Stevens.

The cousin told Williams' mother that they were going to visit a friend at Presbyterian Hospital.

Berry said Diaz did not call the mother until noon Friday and told her they would be coming home, but by 3 p.m. when they didn't arrive home the mother called police.

Police held a press conference, and the media were present and given photos of Williams, but within a half hour Williams was returned home with Diaz.

The only problem was that Diaz had a 1-year-old girl with them who does not belong to them, police said.

Police held another press conference concerning the 1-year-old.

"(Diaz said) that she met Jameal's mother, or a woman, two days ago and that she picked up Jameal but can't tell us when she picked her up. She doesn't have a phone number for Jameal's mother, she doesn't have an address of Jameal's mother and she has no way of contacting Jameal's mother," police said at a press conference.

Berry said police are referring to the 1-year-old as Jameal because Diaz has told them that that is the baby's name and that the woman from whom she got the baby is named Jameal Thomas.

Police said they have taken Diaz into custody and are driving her around 45th Street and Lancaster Avenue because they said that's where Diaz said she met Jameal Thomas.

Mother Arrested After 3-Year-Old Found Wandering Palm Bay Street

March 25, 2008

PALM BAY, Fla. -- A Palm Bay mother was arrested Tuesday for allegedly leaving her 3- and 7 year-old children alone at a babysitter's house. A passing driver found the 3-year-old walking by himself on a busy road late Tuesday afternoon.

The 3-year-old Palm Bay boy was put in a police car for safekeeping while investigators sorted out how he ended up wandering down the middle of busy San Fililpo Drive in the middle of the day.

"It is one of the busiest streets in the city," said Barney Wies, Palm Bay Police Department.

A driver saw the child, pulled him out of the traffic and called police. They found his 7-year-old sister in the babysitter's empty home nearby.

Investigators said 28-year-old Shomeka Parker left her children
at the babysitter's house even though the babysitter wasn't home. Police said Parker was on her way to a job interview in Melbourne and figured the babysitter would be home soon. Eyewitness News cameras caught the babysitter arriving an hour and forty five minutes after the children were dropped off.

Police said the children should have never been left alone for that period of time and they are fortunate the boy was found by a Good Samaritan before he was kidnapped or struck by a car. Parker was arrested on charges of child neglect after she arrived to get her children.

Parker, a single mom, was taken to the police department for more questioning. Her children were put in the custody of the Department of Children and Families for the time being. As for the babysitter, police said, it appears she was an innocent bystander.

Missing Philadelphia Niglet Found Safe And Sound

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―

A baby girl missing for almost two days was found safe and sound by Philadelphia police late Monday evening.

Police said the mother of 2-month-old Shaniyah Granby was found on the 1200 block of West Venango Street at about 10:30 p.m. A woman identified as Clarrisa Hanton was taken into custody and is facing charges.

The baby girl's mother, 26-year-old Tiesha Pitts, had apparently entrusted her daughter to Hanton around 5:30 p.m. Saturday evening in North Philadelphia.

The child's mother told police Hanton, who was an acquaintance she only knew as "Crystal", asked to take the baby shopping. Pitts called police when her daughter wasn't returned over 24 hours later.

Investigators said the child's mother has been unable to provide many details surrounding the incident and is suspected to have mental health problems.

"It's sort of baffling, (you) can't understand why a parent would do this, so we are definitely looking into her mental status," said Sergeant Lamonte Adams with the Philadelphia Police.

A relative of Hanton explained to CBS 3 the incident was not the first time she has run off with someone else's child.

"She'll take a child if she feels though the mother cannot care for the child; she'll take the child to the hospital, but she would not harm the child or herself," Shakeith Washington said.

Police said the child's father fully cooperated with the investigation and told authorities he did not know Hanton.

The young child was uninjured in the incident, but was taken to an area hospital as a precaution.
