Philly Men Charged With Using Instagram To Steal $50K From Banks
June 6, 2017 10:23 AM By Stephanie Ballesteros

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Three Philadelphia men have been charged with using Instagram to steal thousands
of dollars from banks.

Authorities say the men stole more than $50,000 from various financial institutions, including the Pennsylvania State Employees Credit Union.

According to court documents, Shakour S. Smith, 26, Ikeem M. Starks, 25, and Quadir J. Burley, 18, used Instagram to recruit people in their fraud scheme.

Police say the men created an Instagram account where they posted bank logos and enticed people to “like” their posts. The criminals then obtained account information from the people who responded – promising them a cut of the money they planned to steal from banks.

The men would allegedly deposit fraudulent checks into the accounts of participants and then withdraw money that wasn’t there, say officials.

“These thieves used modern-day social media tools to lure people to help them commit old-fashioned crimes – depositing fraudulent checks into bank accounts and withdrawing money that didn’t belong to them,” said Attorney General Shapiro. “Whether the criminals are scammers targeting elderly Pennsylvanians, or con men targeting banks, we’ll hold them accountable.”

The men were caught after meeting with undercover agents, posing as potential participants, to explain how the scam worked.

All three have been charged with conspiracy to commit theft by deception, multiple counts of dealing in the proceeds of unlawful activities and related crimes.

They are being held in Montgomery County Prison.

2 Women On The Run After Violent Bank Robbery In North Hills
July 7, 2017 10:45 PM

NORTH HILLS (CBSLA.com) — A bank hit straight out of a Hollywood movie. Except it was all too real.

Two women robbed a bank in North Hills Friday and were on the run Friday night.

Witnesses said the women were extremely violent when they walked into the Chase Bank on Sepulveda near Nordhoff.

They told everyone to get on the ground. The bank was full at the time.

They both were wearing gloves, baseball hats, t-shirts and yoga pants.

One was armed with a gun. The other had a bag to throw the cash in — a bag with black and white stripes and a pink bottom.

The FBI says they ordered everyone inside to drop down to the floor in what’s called a takeover robbery.

They took off — and now agents are looking to see if they’re linked to any other recent robberies.

Benjie Richmond and Phyllis Jackson

It wasn’t just the cradle she was robbing.

A 71-year-old woman and her 60-year-old boyfriend were busted this week by the FBI for committing a string of bank heists dating back to 2015, authorities said.

Phyllis Jackson and Benjie Richmond were picked up at their home in Brooklyn on Tuesday — shortly after they finished holding up the Chase at Sixth Ave and West 4th Street in the Village, according to Manhattan federal prosecutors.

The Bonnie & Clyde duo is suspected of striking several banks over the past two years — using the same M.O. each and every time.

“She [stands] at the teller station as he comes in behind her, pushes a demand note, and displays a firearm,” explained Lt. John Rogan, of the FBI-NYPD Joint Bank Robbery Violent Crimes Task Force.

“It’s unassuming,” he said. “A male and female entering a bank.”

While prosecutors only had enough evidence to charge Jackson with robbing three banks, they were able to get Jackson for eight total.

Authorities said the couple made off with more than $10,000 in total since they began their geriatric crime spree in 2015.

During their latest heist, the seasoned thieves managed to make off with $1,685, the feds said.

Their biggest score came in Dec. 2015 — when Richmond held up the Citibank at 395 Avenue of the Americas and walked away with $3,280.

Jackson joined him in the summer of 2016, with her first caper coming on July 5 at a NorthEast Community Bank on W 23rd Street.

The septuagenarian walked into the building with Richmond and posed as a customer while he slipped a note to the teller and flashed a pistol.

“Just give me the money, I have a weapon, don’t make noise, no one gets hurt,” the piece of paper read.

Jackson would go on to rob two more banks with her younger lover — though authorities are not ruling out her participation in the other holdups.

“We have two elderly individuals who are committing these crimes,” Rogan said. “They are quite spry for their age.”

Surveillance photos show a suspect who allegedly tried to rob a series of banks in Manhattan.

Police are searching for a man wanted in a series of Manhattan bank robberies that occurred over five days earlier in August, authorities said.

The crook’s one-man crime wave started Aug. 16 at about 12:30 p.m. at the HSBC branch at 15 Union Square West, when he passed a note to a teller demanding money. The teller walked away from the window, and the thief ran off empty-handed.

About an hour later, the suspect tried again at a Chase branch at 1260 Broadway, between West 32nd and West 33rd streets near Herald Square. He passed a note to a teller, and made off with an undisclosed sum of money.

The third try was no charm for this crook: on Aug. 18, he tried robbing a Chase branch at 2099 Broadway, on the Upper West Side between West 72nd and West 73rd streets. The teller refused to comply with his demand for money, and the suspect ran south on Broadway, police said.

The suspect got what he wanted on Aug. 21, when he hit a Chase branch at 1860 Broadway, on the Upper West Side between West 61st and West 62nd streets. on Monday. He passed a teller a note stating he was armed and demanded money. He fled with an unspecified amount.

Police described the felon as 40 to 45 years of age with a dark  complexion. Surveillance footage shows the man wearing dark-rimmed eyeglasses.

The suspected bank robber.

A robber dubbed the “Broadway Bandit” is wanted for sticking up seven banks, many of them along the Great White Way, authorities said.

The FBI and NYPD say the man has successfully robbed four of the banks, while striking out at three others, and seems to be targeting busy areas where he can blend into crowds.

The robbery spree started Aug. 16 when he walked into an HSBC bank on Union Square West, just off Broadway, and passed a note to a teller demanding money.

The man fled the bank empty-handed when the employee refused to cooperate, police said.

Later that day, he hit a Chase Bank on Broadway and W. 32nd St., again passed a note and made off with an undetermined amount of cash.

Between Aug. 18 and Aug. 24, he successfully robbed two Chase Banks in three attempts, all of which were along Broadway between W. 62nd and W. 79th streets.

On Tuesday, he tried to rob a Bank of America on W. 145th St. near Frederick Douglass Blvd. but ended up fleeing with no money.

A short time later, he hit another Bank of America on Broadway and W. 72nd St., where he made off with an unknown sum of cash.

His run on Broadway is over.

The so-called Broadway Bandit was busted by an FBI-NYPD joint task force Wednesday evening in Manhattan, according to reports.

The feds arrested Jaime Frierson, 47, in Harlem around 6 p.m. for allegedly sticking up seven banks — many of them on the Great White Way, WABC-TV reported.

His spree started Aug. 18, when he robbed four banks while walking away empty-handed from three others.

The two most recent holdups were on Tuesday, when he struck out at a Bank of America on West 145th Street near Frederick Douglass Boulevard.

He then made off with an unknown sum from a Bank of America on Broadway and West 72nd Street.

Two violent robberies just blocks apart in the Bronx were caught on camera earlier this month, including one in which the victim was attacked with broomsticks, authorities said Monday.

In both muggings, the victims were beaten as they were entering their Fordham Heights apartment buildings on Sept. 14 and 18.

The first incident occurred at a building on Walton Avenue and East 183rd Street when the assailant followed the 48-year old man into the lobby and began punching him in the face near the elevator around 2 a.m., the video shows.

The beating continued after the man fell to the floor until he was knocked unconscious.

The thief stole his cell phone and wallet before walking away.

The victim went to St. Barnabas Hospital in serious but stable condition.

Days later, a 34-year-old man was robbed by four suspects who beat him with broomsticks and punched him repeatedly outside a building at East Fordham Road and Walton Avenue just after midnight, police said.

The victim tried to fight off the two men and two women, but not before they stole his bag, which contained food.

The victim in that case was not seriously injured.

86-Year-Old Woman Placed On Probation For Bank Robbery Guilty Plea
January 23, 2018 at 4:18 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS/AP) — An 86-year-old woman who pleaded guilty to charges in a Philadelphia bank robbery has been placed on a year’s probation.

Court records indicate Emily Coakley entered pleas to lesser charges of possession of an instrument of crime and simple assault while charges including robbery and theft were withdrawn.

Police say Coakley had a handgun when she demanded $400 from a TD Bank in the University City neighborhood on Nov. 21.

The district attorney’s office said Tuesday that Coakley believed the bank had shorted her $400. Prosecutors cited her health issues and the fact the gun was empty as factors in the plea deal for non-reporting probation.

Coakley’s attorney hasn’t returned a phone call seeking comment.

Hylton was arrested later that day near a pizzeria where he had allegedly been flaunting the stolen dough.

He told cops, “I’m Captain America!” sources said and when they asked what his last name was he responded, “Alien.”

When he was frisked police found the cash in his trouser pockets, the court papers state.

At the abandoned building Hylton had been staying at, on Barnes Ave., cops found the weapon which he had ditched after the heist.

Hylton is charged with one count of bank robbery and could face up to 20 years behind bars if convicted.

A crook wearing a long black wig robbed a Manhattan bank Saturday afternoon — and was busted with a little help from a cab driver, police and the cabbie told The Post.

John Sidney, 46 — also known as Madea Sidney — entered the Chase Bank on Sixth Avenue near West 4th Street at noon and passed a teller a note demanding cash, cops said. The teller handed over $500 and the thief bolted.

Sidney quickly hailed a yellow cab and asked for a ride to West 42nd Street and Eighth Avenue, said stick nigger driver Thierno Diakhate — who thought Sidney was a woman. It was not clear if Sidney was in disguise or is transgender.

Once they hit 14th Street, Sidney announced a change of plans and asked to be taken to Brooklyn.

“I took Flatbush Avenue … and made a left onto Fulton, went all the way down to Gates Avenue, where I got a call from an officer,” said Diakhate, 33. “My phone was ringing, but I could not pick it up because I was driving.”

But once he reached his be-wigged passenger’s destination on Gates Avenue near Marcus Garvey Boulevard in Bedford-Stuyvesant, he finally glanced at his phone.

“I realized I got five missed calls,” Diakhate said. “I saw I got a message from an officer of a picture of the lady. In the message, the officer said, ‘We sent you this picture because we believe this lady got into your cab.’ The officer said the lady robbed a bank in Manhattan. I texted the officer back, ‘She’s still in my cab.’ ”

Cops apparently got Diakhate’s sail foam number from the cab company.

Sidney soon asked to leave the cab, only to wait outside for a few minutes and get back inside with a man who asked to be dropped off about three blocks away. Sidney handed him something before he got out of the car, the cabby said.

Sidney exited minutes later, at Throop Avenue and Van Buren Street, Diakhate said.

“I was waiting for which building she was going to enter, where she was going to go,” he added.

As instructed, he drove to the nearest traffic light to meet police.

“When [the cops] got into the cab, when we were heading up to where I dropped her off . . . we saw her try to get into another cab,” Diakhate said.

Sidney was instead busted and charged with robbery, police said.

Diakhate, a cabby for three years and is taking accounting classes, had one complaint: Sidney was cheap on the tip. “The fare was $41.42,” he groused. “She gave me $50 and asked for $5 back.”

The wig-wearing bandit nabbed for a Manhattan bank heist on Saturday is a convicted felon who claimed to be packing a bomb during the robbery, prosecutors revealed on Sunday.

The suspect — who is listed on official records as “John Sidney” but identifies as a woman  and “prefers Miss Sidney,” according to her lawyer — appeared for her arraignment in Manhattan Criminal Court wearing the same long, black wig in which she  was arrested.

Sidney, 46, strolled into a Chase branch on Sixth Avenue near West Fourth Street around noon Saturday and slipped a teller a note that said in substance, “I have a homemade bomb,” prosecutors said.

Sidney fled the West Village bank with $850 in cash, and made her getaway in a yellow taxi, according to authorities.

Little did Sidney know that cops pieced together that she’d  gotten into the cab, and were text messaging the hack as he drove her to Brooklyn.

Sidney was arrested shortly after getting out of the taxi at Throop Avenue and Van Buren Street in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

She  has 25 prior arrests — including one in Aug. 2017 for robbing another Chase bank in Brooklyn by passing a note — and five felony convictions, officials said.

Sidney admitted “on video” to stealing the money “in order to buy drugs and then sell them,” prosecutors said at the arraignment.

Bail was set at $100,000 bond or cash.
